Book Synopsis Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and the Conquest of Florida by : Gonzalo Solís de Merás
Download or read book Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and the Conquest of Florida written by Gonzalo Solís de Merás and published by University Press of Florida. This book was released on 2020-10-20 with total page 348 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pedro Menéndez de Avilés (1519–1574) founded St. Augustine in 1565. His expedition was documented by his brother-in-law, Gonzalo Solís de Merás, who left a detailed and passionate account of the events leading to the establishment of America’s oldest city. Until recently, the only extant version of Solís de Merás’s record was one single manuscript that Eugenio Ruidíaz y Caravia transcribed in 1893, and subsequent editions and translations have always followed Ruidíaz’s text. In 2012, David Arbesú discovered a more complete record: a manuscript including folios lost for centuries and, more important, excluding portions of the 1893 publication based on retellings rather than the original document. In the resulting volume, Pedro Menéndez de Avilés and the Conquest of Florida, Arbesú sheds light on principal events missing from the story of St. Augustine’s founding. By consulting the original chronicle, Arbesú provides readers with the definitive bilingual edition of this seminal text.
Book Synopsis Souls in the Mist by : Monica del Valle
Download or read book Souls in the Mist written by Monica del Valle and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 166 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Souls in the Mist: A tale I lived is a novel where the people, places and customs portrayed represent the life of a rural community in Mexico in the time leading up to the Day of the Dead celebration. The common thread of the story is an old woman who, as she goes from her house to the market, the Church or cemetery during these festivity days, is encountering various inhabitants of the village. As she and the rest of her neighbors are doing various tasks specific to those days, she is narrating her life and sharing her thoughts and memories from the towns old days, and whenever she encounters someone in the village, she takes us by the hand to the inside of that persons story. The traditions associated with these festivities lend a magical aura to the plot of the novel, as the living characters seem not only to reminisce but also to interact with the souls of the deceased. The reader hears the voices of the villagers, and in their manner of speaking becomes witness to the towns deepest soul. Its tone takes a page from the style of Magic Realism made famous by Gabriel Garca-Marquezs One Hundred Years of Solitude, Juan Rulfos Pedro Pramo or Laura Esquivels Like Water for Chocolate.

Book Synopsis Chronicle of King Pedro Volumes 1 - 3 by : Peter Such
Download or read book Chronicle of King Pedro Volumes 1 - 3 written by Peter Such and published by Liverpool University Press. This book was released on 2020-05-28 with total page 1147 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pero López de Ayala’s Chronicle of King Pedro provides a compelling and richly informative account of the turbulent reign of the notorious but enigmatic fourteenth-century Castilian monarch who came to be known as Pedro el Cruel. It is a vitally important source for our understanding of the history of the Iberian Peninsula during this critical period in its development and of the complex social and political divisions by which the Spanish kingdoms were torn. This three-volume Chronicle gives us a gripping and wide-ranging picture of a period characterized by harsh brutality, conflict and betrayal but at the same time by the ideals of chivalry, memorably personified in figures such as the Black Prince and Bertrand du Guesclin. At its centre is the chilling portrait of King Pedro, a brilliantly constructed image of self-destructive evil. The translation is accompanied by a Spanish text taken from Germán Orduna’s groundbreaking edition and by detailed notes. The introduction explores the background to the Chronicle’s composition and sets López de Ayala’s account against a broad canvas of events in the Spanish kingdoms and beyond. It examines how the chronicler’s subtle artistry was used to create a picture of a deeply flawed monarch which has continued to exercise a profound fascination over the centuries.

He earned a law degree from Notre Dame and returned to practice law in Trinidad, Colorado. He served as a district attorney for Las Animas County, Colorado, and as a translator for the U.S. Court of Private Land Claims. In 1898, he began to write and edit for El Progreso, in which many of his articles exposed the unjust treatment of Hispanics in Colorado and New Mexico. He was also New Mexico's first novelist, and took pride in his pioneering efforts to establish a Nuevomexicano literary tradition. This collection of Chacón's writings brings together all published and written materials found, displaying his versatility with samples of his work as an accomplished orator, translator, essayist, historian, novelist, and poet.
