Book excerpt: The Civil War continues to haunt us. As it should. I am especially haunted, since as a Southerner I experience profound shame at the South's refusal to end slavery and the cultural trauma of that apartheid. Here the indomitable Jane Walker explores the siege of Vicksburg in fiction. This novel brings alive the utter horror of a senseless war. Janisse Ray, poet and writer When General Ulysses Grant tries to capture the city of Vicksburg, Mississippi, he finally settles on a 47-day siege which subjects the citizenry and soldiers to starvation and disease. Elise at Vicksburg is an historical novel about an eighteen-year-old girl who lives through the siege in a cave, along with other residents of the town. She and her family are told that Vicksburg is unconquerable, since it sits hundreds of feet above the Mississippi River on the West and has rolling, steep hills on the East, which would deter any army. Elise is a fun-loving girl when she arrives at Vicksburg, but she matures into a woman during the horrific siege, falling in love with a soldier who does everything in his power to woo and protect her. However, a mystery surrounds this soldier.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The first book in a series, Whitney Blood, takes place near the heart of Vicksburg, Mississippi, on the cusp of the Civil War. The fate of the Whitney empire relies on Baxter Whitney, and he needs an heir. He has chosen a very young Southern belle, Elise Ewell, to revive the bloodline, but Baxter is expecting her to be a submissive wife who will obey him, be strict with the slaves, and most of all, not meddle in the Whitney history. Elise is headstrong, difficult to manage, and she struggles with the conflict about to take place in the country over slavery. In order to keep his family secrets, Baxter successfully isolates Elise from her family, church, and friends, but he cannot keep her from the servants. The plantation has breath of the dead, having secrets and stories of their own to tell. Elise finds out that the Whitneys have a great deal to hide. Over time she becomes deathly aware that the manor has a haunted hand of madness on Baxter, a violent hand that endangers her life, the life of her child, and the objective for the future of any Whitney blood.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Volume 13 of The Papers of Jefferson Davis follows the former president of the Confederacy as he becomes head of the Carolina Life Insurance Company of Memphis and attempts to gain a financial foothold for his newly reunited family. Having lost everything in the Civil War and spent two years immediately afterwards in federal prison, Davis faced a mounting array of financial woes, health problems, and family illnesses and tragedies in the 1870s. Despite setbacks during this decade, Davis also began a quest to rehabilitate his image and protect his historical legacy. Although his position with the insurance company provided temporary financial stability, Davis resigned after the Panic of 1873 forced the sale of the company and its new owners canceled payments to Carolina policyholders. He left for England the following year in search of employment and to recuperate from ongoing illnesses. In 1876, Davis became president of the London-based Mississippi Valley Society and relocated to New Orleans to run the company. Throughout the 1870s, Davis waged an expensive and seemingly endless legal battle to regain his prewar Mississippi plantation, Brierfield. He also began working on his memoirs at Beauvoir, the Gulf Coast estate of a family friend. Though disfranchised, Davis addressed the subject of politics with more frequency during this decade, criticizing the Reconstruction policies of the federal government while defending the South and the former Confederacy. The volume ends with Davis's inheritance of Beauvoir, which was his last home. The editors have drawn from over one hundred manuscript repositories and private collections in addition to numerous published sources in compiling Volume 13.

School was everywhere they camped, Education was lived out, America was their textbook, and God, their Master Teacher!

Book excerpt: "An erotic scandal chronicle so popular it became a byword... Expertly tailored for contemporary readers. It combines scurrilous attacks on the social and political celebritites of the day, disguised just enough to exercise titillating speculatuion, with luscious erotic tales." —Belles Lettres This story concerns the return of to earth of the goddess of Justice, Astrea, to gather information about private and public behavior on the island of Atalantis. Manley drew on her experience as well as on an obsessive observation of her milieu to produce this fast paced narrative of political and erotic intrigue.

Book excerpt: This journal records the Civil War experiences of a sensitive, well-educated, young southern woman. Kate Stone was twenty when the war began, living with her widowed mother, five brothers, and younger sister at Brokenburn, their plantation home in northeastern Louisiana. When Grant moved against Vicksburg, the family fled before the invading armies, eventually found refuge in Texas, and finally returned to a devastated home. Kate began her journal in May, 1861, and made regular entries up to November, 1865. She included briefer sketches in 1867 and 1868. In chronicling her everyday activities, Kate reveals much about a way of life that is no more: books read, plantation management and crops, maintaining slaves in the antebellum period, the attitude and conduct of slaves during the war, the fate of refugees, and civilian morale. Without pretense and with almost photographic clarity, she portrays the South during its darkest hours.
