We profit by them, learn to bypass their failures, gain courage from their strength in times of crucial stress and strain, and more. For Christians, one of the unmistakably great Old Testament characters is Elijah the Tishbite, of the tribe of Naphtali. He has been written about for centuries by many authors. Ravens fed him, God-given power was his to raise a sorrowing widow’s boy from death, the idolatrous priests of Baal on Mount Carmel heard the impact of his tremendous challenge, and angels became his ministers. He was only a man—but he was a man of God, and that made all the difference. Enjoy this creative biography of one of the Old Testament's most interesting prophets.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elijah the Prophet Now, these two deities, Baal, the male, and Ashtaroth, the female, represented the fertilizing and productive principle in nature, and their worship was that of power. To the more cultivated and refined, it was simply a species of Pan theism; to the multitude, it was what one has called the worship of deified abundance, under a splendid and sensu ous ceremonial or, as Maurice has put it, The worship of Baal was the worship of power as distinguished from right eousness.t Hence, the apostasy of Ahab in giving up the personal Jehovah, the covenant God of Israel, and the cre ator and preserver of all things, and preferring Baal, was analogous to, if not, indeed, precisely identical with, the mod ern heresy of those who discard a personal God, and refuse to believe in him who is a loving father, while they deify nat ure under the name of law. Thus this old history has a special appropriateness to the present time, and we may prof itably ponder for a little the record of the manner in which the efforts of Ahab were counteracted and neutralized. The introduction of Baal-worship into Israel was part of a deliberate plan on the part of Ahab. He wished to strength en himself to the fullest extent against his Syrian enemies, while, at the same time, he developed the material resources of his country by an alliance with the Zidonians, who held the sea-board. If he could only succeed in welding Israel and Zidon together, he felt that he could defy the dynasty of Damascus, and look forward to a time of great prosperity from a participation in the unrivaled commerce of the Phoe nicians. But there is no unifying influence so strong as that of religion. Hence he determined to carry the nation over bodily into the Zidonian worship; and, as the first step in that direction, he allied himself to the royal house of Zidon. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: .From one generation to another, the servants of the Lord have sought to edify their fellow-believers by commenting on the Old Testament narrative. In such ministries expositions of the life of Elijah have always been prominent. His sudden appearance out of complete obscurity, his dramatic interventions in the national history of Israel, his miracles, his departure from earth in a chariot of fire, all serve to captivate the thought of preacher and writer alike. The New Testament sustains this interest. If Christ Jesus is the Prophet "like unto Moses," Elijah, too, has his New Testament counterpart in John-the greatest of the prophets. And even more remarkably, Elijah himself in living person reappears to view when, with Moses, he stands on the mount of "the excellent glory," "to speak of the strife that won our life with the incarnate Son of God."

Book excerpt: This book is the first full expository series that I had done, first delivered at a smaller scale to the good people of Bertrams Chapel in 19951996. I am thankful for the call of God on my life to preach His Word. As a pastor, one of my concerns is that people grow closer to God through the study of the Scriptures. I am passionate about preaching and teaching systematically through books of the bible and thereby teaching the whole counsel of God.

Book excerpt: Hamilton Smith (1862-1943), born in Barnes, Surrey, the son of a sea captain, was employed in the office of his uncle's building firm, where he was later joined by his cousin F B Hole. By 1901, married and living in Sutton, Surrey, with his wife and young family, he had retired from the building trade and entered full-time upon the task of building up the church of God. Later in life, he moved to Weston-super-Mare in Somerset, his wife Rachel's home county. His personal ministry was delivered in the United Kingdom, but his written ministry continues to be read worldwide. Along with H P Barker, A J Pollock, J T Mawson and F B Hole he frequently contributed articles to "Scripture Truth" magazine, which often provided the basis for books later published by the Central Bible Truth Depot. Hamilton Smith's written expositions of the Scriptures are brief, clear and very much to the point. This volume is one of a series of Old Testament character studies for which he is probably best known. It traces the major events of the life of Elijah, with all the highs and lows in his work as a prophet. He knew only too well the inadequacies of his own humanity. But Elijah knew the living God, was conscious of His presence, and was aware that prayer brought him into contact with the greatest power in the universe. By experience, he comes to understand that the God of creation, power and judgment, is supremely the God of grace. At each step, the author presents clear, practical lessons for Christians today as they too seek to present God's word with authority to an indifferent or antgonistic world.

Book excerpt: An analysis of the intertwining tales of Elijah and Ahab--mercurial prophet and Machiavellian king--this book is an accessible treatment of one of the most dramatic and well-known episodes in the Bible. In contrast to the popular image of Elijah as a courageous wonder-worker who calls down fire from heaven and ascends to heaven in a fiery chariot, this book contends that the prophet was a deeply conflicted man, torn between a burning idealism and a deep disillusionment over his failure to achieve his ideals. Despite his profound sense of failure, Elijah's struggle against the paganizing regime of King Ahab and his queen, Jezebel, managed to save monotheism from eclipse, and in so doing alter the course of human history. This work further proposes that the tale presented by the Bible is more than an account of an ancient battle between two historic figures: it is a paradigm of the struggle between the ideals of human dignity and justice, and the alternative of expediency in the pursuit of power, a conflict that pervades human life to this very day.

This book was released on 2010-08-18 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Revelation 10:9 And I went unto the angel, and said unto him, Give me the little book. And he said unto me, Take it, and eat it up; and it shall make thy belly bitter, but it shall be in thy mouth sweet as honey. Revelation 10:10 And I took the little book out of the angels hand, and ate it up; and it was in my mouth sweet as honey: and as soon as I had eaten it, my belly was bitter. Here is the mystery of God, where He will train an angel to write about the seven thunders in modern times or fear. Fear is the beginning of all wisdom (knowledge), yet we have to reach for, there is nothing to fear but fear itself. How can a book result in my mouth sweet as honey when I speak and my belly was bitter as I tried to swallow my pride and the wisdom made me sicken? He told us to eat of the book as He has told us to eat of His body. A location that does not teach fear is not a valid church location, since fear is the beginning of all wisdom (knowledge). Malachi 3:1 Behold, I will send my messenger, and he shall prepare the way before me: and the LORD, whom ye seek, shall suddenly come to his temple, even the messenger of the covenant, whom ye delight in: behold, he shall come, saith the LORD of hosts. Malachi 3:2 But who may abide the day of his coming? and who shall stand when he appeareth? for he is like a refiners fire, and like fullers soap. Malachi 3:3 And he shall sit as a refiner and purifier of silver: and he shall purify the sons of Levi, and purge them as gold and silver, that they may offer unto the LORD an offering in righteousness.
