Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Perhaps the most salient lesson learned from the pandemic was how much we still need teachers. Technology will not usurp the fundamental auspices of principals, master teachers, counselors, and other support staff. Students, as social learners, require guidance, structure, and reassurance from adults. The empirical evidence suggests economically disadvantaged students suffer the most from the restricted personal connection of over-reliance on technology. The data indicate that teachers (1) cannot be replaced in the foreseeable future, and (2) are the most critical component for student realization of future readiness. The status quo is antiquated, faltering with crisis talent shortages, and only projected to intensify further. Preserving the U.S.’s global standing and expanding democratic principles for equality are inseparably coupled with the plight of teachers. Reinvigorating the teaching profession requires decisive action to reorganize the ecosystem and professional opportunities for educators. Enticing growing pools of talent into the teaching profession involves establishing a vibrant academic structure and altering the perception of teacher value. My viewpoint is to start with teachers. The optimal approach for educational excellence is empowered teachers working in a tiered system for progressive leadership. Grounded in a supportive structure to earn increasing autonomy, teachers elevate their professional agency.

Book excerpt: The American Federation of Teachers Teacher Preparation Task Force was established to examine the research on what works and what does not work in the field of teacher preparation as a basis for making policy recommendations. Just as important, the task force considered how best to implement such policy recommendations in a way that takes into account all stakeholders--teacher education institutions, K-12 schools, teacher accrediting agencies, state education boards, federal government regulators, education associations and unions--and leads to real improvement in the field as measured by the quality of new teachers entering the profession. The task force recommends three significant changes that must be made to truly improve teacher preparation and, by extension, improve teaching and learning in schools. These changes include: (1) alignment and coherence of teacher preparation standards, programs and assessments; (2) rigorous and universal assessment; and (3) a profession governed by professionals. To drive these changes, the AFT shares recommendations, and the principles and design features on which they are based, that are essential to building the kind of professionalism, alignment, and coherence needed for high-quality teacher preparation. Appended are: (1) Information about the AFT Teacher Preparation Task Force; (2) AFT Survey of New Teachers; (3) AFT Principles and Standards For Effective Teacher Preparation; and (4) Inventory of State-Level Teacher Candidate Entrance Exams. (Contains 1 figure, 2 tables, and 20 endnotes.).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A revolution is happening in education, with leaders and teachers now asked to focus on learning, to develop collaborative teams to impact on students, to use and raise professional standards, and to identify and esteem expertise in our profession. With new demands relating to technological advances, changing demographics, internationalism, and the inclusion of ‘twenty-first-century skills,’ there is pressure on schools to deliver greater and deeper success with more students. The Turning Point aims to present the factors needed to affect real change for school systems, in classrooms, and in the teaching profession by: Arguing for the establishment of teaching as a true 'profession' alongside areas such as medicine or law. Identifying the expertise fundamental to the meeting demands of schools. Elaborating on evaluative thinking and clinical practice as the basis of this new profession. Outlining core levers of change to show how teachers can have profound impacts on educational, medical, and social dimensions of students. This book is essential reading for teachers, school leaders, education policymakers, teacher candidates, and teacher educators. Those working in affiliated professions, such as adolescent psychologists and health workers, will also find aspects of the book relevant to their work.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a book by educators, for educators. It grapples with the complexities, the humanity and the possibilities in education. In a climate of competing accountabilities and measurement mechanisms; corporate solutions to education ‘problems’; and narratives of ‘failing’ schools, ‘underperforming’ teachers and ‘disengaged’ students; this book asks ‘What matters?’ or ‘What should matter?’ in education. Based in the unique Australian context, this book situates Australian education policy, research and practice within the international education narrative. It argues that professionals within schools should be supported, empowered and welcomed into policy discourse, not dictated to by top-down bureaucracy. It advocates for a flipping, flattening and democratising of the education system, in Australia and around the world. Flip the System Australia: What matters in education brings together the voices of teachers, school leaders and scholars in order to offer diverse perspectives, important challenges and hopeful alternatives to the current education system.

Book excerpt: In this 2nd edition of Focus: Elevating the Essentials to Radically Improve Student Learning, Mike Schmoker extends and updates the case that our schools could be on the cusp of swift, unparalleled improvements. But we are stymied by a systemwide failure to simplify and prioritize; we have yet to focus our limited time and energy on the most essential, widely acknowledged, evidence-based practices that could have more impact than all other initiatives combined. They are: simple, coherent curricula; straightforward, traditional literacy practices; and lessons built around just a few hugely effective elements of good teaching. As Schmoker demonstrates, the case for these practices—and the need for them—has grown prodigiously. In every chapter, you’ll find late-breaking discoveries and practical advice on how to simplify the implementation of new state standards in the subject areas; on the hidden pitfalls of our most popular, but unproven instructional fads and programs; and on simple, versatile strategies for building curriculum, planning lessons, and integrating literacy into every discipline. All of these strategies and findings are supported with exciting new evidence from actual schools. Their success confirms, as Michael Fullan writes, that a focus on the best "high-leverage practices" won’t only improve student performance; they will produce "stunningly powerful consequences" in our schools.

Book excerpt: This booklet presents articles that deal with identifying signs of stress and methods of reducing work-related stressors. An introductory article gives a summary of the causes, consequences, and cures of teacher stress and burnout. In articles on recognizing signs of stress, "Type A" and "Type B" personalities are examined, with implications for stressful behavior related to each type, and a case history of a teacher who was beaten by a student is given. Methods of overcoming job-related stress are suggested in eight articles: (1) "How Some Teachers Avoid Burnout"; (2) "The Nibble Method of Overcoming Stress"; (3) "Twenty Ways I Save Time"; (4) "How To Bring Forth The Relaxation Response"; (5) "How To Draw Vitality From Stress"; (6) "Six Steps to a Positive Addiction"; (7)"Positive Denial: The Case For Not Facing Reality"; and (8) "Conquering Common Stressors". A workshop guide is offered for reducing and preventing teacher burnout by establishing support groups, reducing stressors, changing perceptions of stressors, and improving coping abilities. Workshop roles of initiator, facilitator, and members are discussed. An annotated bibliography of twelve books about stress is included. (FG)
