Book excerpt: We no longer long for "happily ever after." We no longer believe in "you complete me" or Mad Men gender roles. But we all, still, love to love love. This book is an exploration of a love for a new generation---a love replete with intimacy and trust, a love with room for change and independence, a love without ownership.I began this book rather casually, after a Midsummer Night's date. The first chapter met with more enthusiasm than anything I had ever written. It was then serialized on Elephant Journal, where it garnered millions of readers and an online community of 108,000. I felt like a donkey, who had accidentally won the love of a fairy queen-this new love was something we were all clearly puzzling over.Things I would like to do with You is a universal, personal and timeless exploration of love-a love that includes loneliness, humor, and friendship.May it be of benefit!~ Waylon Hart Lewis, Author

Book excerpt: The Science of Yoga draws on a hidden wealth of science, history, and surprising facts to cut through the fog that surrounds contemporary yoga and to show - for the first time - what is uplifting and beneficial and what is delusional, flaky, and dangerous. At heart, it illuminates the risks and rewards. The book takes the reader on a whirlwind tour of undiscovered yoga that goes from old libraries in Calcutta to the world capitals of medical research, from little-known archives to spotless laboratories, from sweaty yoga classes with master teachers to the cosy offices of yoga healers. In the process, it shatters myths, lays out unexpected benefits, and offers a compelling vision of how to improve the discipline.

Book excerpt: A hilarious book about parent and child relationships for fans of Ian Falconer and Jon Agee--a perfect gift idea for Father's Day and beyond! Little Jumbo just can't understand why his dad is having such a bad day. It couldn't be the raisins Little Jumbo spit out at the ceiling or the bath he refused to take--after all, Little Jumbo's dad knew he hated raisins and had already taken a bath that week! Luckily, Little Jumbo is such a thoughtful elephant that he decides to turn his dad's bad day around with some of his--ahem, his dad's--favorite things. How to Cheer up Dad is a standout debut featuring a charmingly oblivious little elephant with serious pluck and staying power. It turns the parent-child roles upside down is a great book for dads and the kids who make them laugh.

Book excerpt: A celebration of one of the most influential spiritual leaders of our time: Neem Karoli Baba, the enlightened guru who inspired a generation of seekers—including Ram Dass, Daniel Goleman, and Larry Brilliant—on life-altering journeys that helped change the world. In 1967, Ram Dass returned to the West from India and spread the teachings of his mysterious guru, Neem Karoli Baba, better known as Maharajji. Ram Dass’s words about Maharajji’s life-affirming wisdom resonated with a youth culture that had grown disillusioned with the violence, civil discord, and crude materialism of modern civilization. Hundreds of Westerners traveled to India and experienced Maharajji’s extraordinary presence directly until his death in 1973. His simple directives—love everyone, feed everyone, and remember God—opened their hearts and awakened their souls. What these followers brought back to the West has since changed the landscape of everyday life. Meditation is now mainstream; yoga studios are in every town; and mindfulness is practiced in elementary schools and board-rooms everywhere, from Silicon Valley to Capitol Hill. A stirring piece of history, Love Everyone brings these stories to life, sharing for the first time the inspiring tales of the men and women who followed the siren call of the East to the foothills of the Himalayas, then returned to forever reshape the world. A compelling and inspiring tribute to Maharajji from the Western men and women who knew him best, Love Everyone is a profound teaching on the power of love, as lasting and transformative as the truth, wisdom, and bliss of Maharajji.

Book excerpt: An inspiring guide to finding your life’s purpose—what spiritual teachers call dharma—through mindfulness and self-exploration. Stephen Cope says that in order to have a fulfilling life you must discover the deep purpose hidden at the very core of your self. The secret to unlocking this mystery, he asserts, can be found in the pages of a two-thousand-year-old spiritual classic called the Bhagavad Gita—an ancient allegory about the path to dharma, told through a timeless dialogue between the fabled archer, Arjuna, and his divine mentor, Krishna. Cope takes readers on a step-by-step tour of this revered tale and highlights well-known Western lives that embody its central principles—including such luminaries as Jane Goodall, Walt Whitman, Susan B. Anthony, John Keats, and Harriet Tubman, along with stories of ordinary people as well. If you’re feeling lost in your own life’s journey, The Great Work of Your Life may help you to find and to embrace your true calling. Praise for The Great Work of Your Life “Keep a pen and paper handy as you read this remarkable book: It’s like an owner’s manual for the soul.”—Dani Shapiro, author of Devotion “A masterwork . . . You’ll find inspiration in these pages. You’ll gain a better appreciation of divine guidance and perhaps even understand how you might better hear it in your own life.”—Yoga Journal “I am moved and inspired by this book, the clarity and beauty of the lives lived in it, and the timeless dharma it teaches.”—Jack Kornfield, author of A Path with Heart “A rich source of contemplation and inspiration [that] encourages readers . . . to discover and fully pursue their inner self’s calling.”—Publishers Weekly “Fabulous . . . If you have ever wondered what your purpose is, this book is a great guide to help you on your path.”—YogaHara

Book excerpt: Jenny Sue Kostecki-Shaw's Papa Brings Me the World is a poignant picture book that celebrates the bond between parent and child, and follows their long-distance trip around the world. Most parents drive a car or ride a bus or train to work—but not Lulu’s papa. He navigates mountains, deserts, and oceans, each time returning home with pockets full of treasures. There’s an ancient calculator from China, a musical mbira from Zimbabwe, and a special game from Sumatra. But the best treasures are special stories Papa tells when he comes home—tales of playing peekaboo with rare birds in the Andes and befriending dragons in the Irish Sea. This long-distance love story between parent and child celebrates inclusivity, imagination, and the richness of global cultures. Christy Ottaviano Books

Book excerpt: w e a t h e r v e i n s blurs the lines of poetry and turns the medium on its head. There are no rules, and there shouldn't be. Brittany Josie's raw words embody feminine strength with a willingness to be vulnerable at all times while throwing in a classic haiku here and there. Her book is four composed sections, or seasons: fall, winter, spring, and summer. They are as they sound, with fall being her raw anger, winter her cold sadness, spring speaks of her growth, and summer is her searing revival. She writes of subtle sexism hiding in plain sight, the grief of lost relationships, and the pain that setting relationship boundaries can bring. She speaks of her own journey with mental illness and refuses to apologize for being honest. The seasons of her life are the inspiration behind w e a t h e r v e i n s and she writes like a force of nature.

Book excerpt: “Thompson captures the ache, fizz, yearning and frustration of being the father of adolescent boys.” —Michael Chabon “What a riveting, touching, and painful read!” —Maria Semple “Fun, moving, raw, and relatable.” —Tony Hawk What makes a good father, and what makes one a failure? Does less-is-more parenting inspire independence and strength, or does it encourage defiance and trouble? Kickflip Boys is the story of a father’s struggle to understand his willful skateboarder sons, challengers of authority and convention, to accept his role as a vulnerable “skate dad,” and to confront his fears that the boys are destined for an unconventional and potentially fraught future. With searing honesty, Neal Thompson traces his sons’ progression through all the stages of skateboarding: splurging on skate shoes and boards, having run-ins with security guards, skipping classes and defying teachers, painting graffiti, drinking and smoking, and more. As the story veers from funny to treacherous and back, from skateparks to the streets, Thompson must confront his complicity and fallibility. He also reflects on his upbringing in rural New Jersey, and his own adventures with skateboards, drugs, danger, and defiance. A story of thrill-seeking teens, of hope and love, freedom and failure, Kickflip Boys reveals a sport and a community that have become a refuge for adolescent boys who don’t fit in. Ultimately, it’s the survival story of a loving modern American family, of acceptance, forgiveness, and letting go.

Book excerpt: The aristocracy of Antarctic exploration does not include the name of Thomas Orde Hans Lees. He came away from Shackleton's 1914 expedition with the reputation of being the least popular and most criticised of the men involved in the Endurance adventure in the Weddell Sea. Not only was he disliked simply for being himself but he was also expected to become the first victim of cannibalism if the 22 men of Elephant Island had run out of food. Previous accounts of Shackleton's adventure have unfailingly mentioned that Orde Lees was unpopular. Though they have plundered his excellent journal for much of the detail of life on board the Endurance, on the pack ice and finally on Elephant Island, the part he played in keeping the men alive has not been recognised. His journal has - surprinsingly - never been published and this book is a long overdue testament to a much misunderstood - and probably unfairly maligned - man. After his rescue from Elephant Island, Orde Lees campaigned vigorously for the use of parachutes in the newly formed Royal Air Force and he was publicly credited with being the primary advocate. Many pilots owe their lives to his faith in this new invention. He went on to perform more service for his country in Japan and spent the final period of his life in New Zealand.

Tribble mines a journal and a trove of letters from the Special Collections and Archives of Z. Smith Reynolds Library at Wake Forest University to introduce a significant figure in North Carolina and Baptist history. The writings of Sally Merriam Wait reveal a northernborn woman with anti-slavery leanings engaging with an unfamiliar environment in the slave-holding South. Her ambition led her from young convert in revival-swept New England to devoted wife of Reverend Samuel Wait, the first president and founder of Wake Forest University. Wait's decisions are shaped by a surging evangelical movement, changes in the American economy, the rise of women's social agency, a fracturing of political traditions, and the moral conflicts inherent in a slave economy. The book provides a rare glimpse into the spiritual and worldly education of a young woman of faith at the dawn of market capitalism in Jacksonian America"--

Book excerpt: Michelle Kennedy watched live coverage of a fiery, multi-car accident for an entire day before recognizing her father's Chevy pickup pinned between the two semi-trucks. A television news reporter at the time, she narrowly avoided being assigned to cover the collision that killed her father. Suddenly a part of the news she'd reported on for years, Kennedy longed to run away from broadcasting, her life, and looped images of her father's body underneath a yellow tarp. Blending reverent reflection with rollicking adventure, Don't Pee in the Wetsuit is a travel memoir about Kennedy's attempt to sift through an unresolved relationship with her dad on a six-month trip around the world. Gallivanting through eleven countries with a best friend, Kennedy loses her clothes in Costa Rica, swims with bull sharks in Australia, gets scolded for peeing in her wetsuit on a cave tour in New Zealand, and overindulges on food, wine, and foreign men. Writing on the road, she struggles to forgive her father's shortcomings and make peace with losing the first love of her life.
