Book excerpt: The purpose of this study is to assess the residents' perceptions of the waterfront landscapes in man-made environments, specifically in the Las Colinas Urban Center, Irving, Texas. From in-depth interviews and passive observations, this research identifies and reviews the specific landscape design characteristics of waterfront landscapes that influence people's decisions to live near water. These specific landscape design characteristics are categorized into three dimensions: elements and features, water characteristics, and accessibility. Understanding how these three dimensions influence intention to live in close proximity to a waterfront landscape are used to provide recommendations for the future design of waterfront development.Most ancient societies flourished in waterfront areas, such as next to the Nile, the Tigris, and the Euphrates, and they did so because of reasons such as transportation, agriculture, safety, and aesthetics. Because most people seem to enjoy living close to the water, many famous cities are located around waterfront areas. Various researchers have discussed the design characteristics that make the waterfront landscape more attractive, such as accessibility, feeling of safety (Butler, 2001), picturesque and memorable scenes (Gabr, 2002), and connectivity (Graham et al., 2009). Moreover, successful waterfront landscape projects offer numerous benefits to their nearby residents (Hou, 2009). For example, they can improve the environment by providing an attractive place for people to gather and increase revenue by promoting job opportunities and accelerating new investments (Hou, 2009). This research is an attempt to understand such conditions in the man-made waterfront environment.This research uses qualitative methods to assess the waterfront landscapes of the Las Colinas Urban Center in Irving, Texas. Resident perception is assessed using in-depth interviews (Taylor and Bogdan, 1998) while passive observation techniques (Francis, 2002) are used to record and document the researcher's observations of the landscape design characteristics of waterfronts. The in-depth interviews specifically focus on the residents' perceptions of the landscape design characteristics of the Las Colinas Urban Center in terms of waterfront elements and features, water characteristics, and accessibility. Interview data are analyzed according to the grounded theory approach (Taylor and Bogdan, 1998). After the interview data are transcribed, key words are used to draw themes (Sommer, 1991). The observations of the landscape design characteristics, including the water body, edges, pathways, connections between the multi-family residences and the waterfront, sitting spaces, and the planting materials, are recorded in photographs. These data from the observations and the data from the interviews are compared with secondary data from the literature review to examine the residents' perceptions of the landscape design characteristics of the Las Colinas Urban Center.In conclusion, according to the results of this research, the landscape design characteristics of Las Calinas Urban Center do have a strong impact on people's decisions about their living area. Therefore, during the design process, developers and designers should fully consider the resident's perceptions of man-made waterfront projects so they can both benefit the users and enhance the further development around it.

All rights not granted by the above license are retained by the author. Abstract: A precious resource and public asset, the urban waterfront is crucial to shaping the city image. It also contributes to quality of life of the city's inhabitants and visitors. However, many waterfront landscapes are only superficially pleasant; some of these lack other significant qualities needed by the public. Designers and end-users may have different notions on waterfront qualities, and communication gaps possibly exist between the two groups. Designers might formulate objectives and ideas on waterfront qualities without adequately understanding the true needs and preferences of users, which encompass aspects deeper than merely visual features. This means that perceptions on certain "latent" waterfront attributes need to be studied. The designers should create more human-oriented waterfront landscapes by gaining a better understanding of real user needs. Public perceptions regarding waterfront landscape and the key aspects associated with those perceptions should be studied. Therefore, the main objective of the present research is to explore an alternative approach to waterfront design through the eyes of users. Tianjin Haihe riverfront was selected for a case study, which consisted of two stages. First, a contextual study included a historical review of the interactive relationship between the city and river. The major forces driving recent redevelopments, including economic, social, environmental, and cultural ones, were identified. Then, the comprehensive master plan and major achievements were critically reviewed. Second, a field study was conducted on October 2009, during which four important aspects of the urban waterfront were specifically examined. These aspects were access, use, comfort, and image. First-hand empirical data were collected using a combined approach involving observation, attitude survey, cognitive mapping, and photo simulation. In all, 110 on-site and 60 off-site completed questionnaires were obtained. Data were analysed using both qualitative and quantitative methods. In general, majority of the respondents were satisfied with the updated waterfront environment. Significant changes were perceived and appreciated. However, the current landscape is not yet ideal. The riverfront is more accessible but lacks vitality: it is simply a "passing by" space rather than a vibrant destination. Successful features (and unsuccessful issues), related to the four key aspects of access, use, comfort, and image were addressed. Correlations between certain design features and emotional reactions were explored. Fiver factors concerning visual perceptions of waterfront landscape were explored: preference, complexity, style, greenery, and openness. Patterns of perceptions among three groups of observers (i.e., local non-professionals, local professionals, and non-local professionals) were found, based on their familiarity with the site and professional background. Local non-professionals seemed more generous in their perceptions. A tendency to over-praise the waterfront settings was apparent. However, they were not as sensitive to aesthetic issues. Non-locals professionals seemed more critical, perhaps leading them to underestimate the waterfront landscape. The search began for a site which was a locus of intensity and contained elements of time, sense of place, the character of the city and a particular relationship with the waterfront. Venice Island, located in the Schuylkill River at Manayunk, a Northwest neighborhood, was chosen due to its intimate scale, localized community and richness of natural and manmade environment. The equal strength of the context pushed the thesis to explore the transformation of the site using the influence of these existing forces. The site contains physical boundaries that include river, island, canal, and Main Street. These suggest threshold and propose a journey or passage to connect the Main Street to the river. Thus the importance of memory and identity to the formation of place combined with that of a journey incorporates existing remains on the island and interventions that intensify the experience. By introducing aspects of the city to the island and further connections to the river, I propose it is a place for people to learn about the environment as an integration of existing forces through the physical forms and sense of place generated by the transformation. The thesis is organized into three parts, which follows the development of the exploration, the first being the urban waterfront and examining ideas relating to public space, inhabiting the edge and the important of the River. The second part outlines the early ideas and study of the site and the city and issues of built and natural environment and design approach. The final section documents the design and transformation of the site related to landscape experience, journey and the urban rivers edge.
