Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Jewish and Muhammadan Calendars: With Rules and Tables and Explanatory Notes on the Julian and Gregorian Calendars The following treatises on the Jewish and Muhammadan Calendars were not originally intended for separate publication. They were first written as part of a more comprehensive book containing an account of other Calendars and Eras to which reference was frequently made. When, through the kindness of friends among my parishioners at Hampstead, I found it possible to publish this portion of the work, I gladly availed myself of the opportunity, and rearranged the MS. in such a manner that it assumed its present form. This, I thought, rendered it necessary to add some brief explanatory notes on the Julian and Gregorian Calendars, such as might take the place of references made to Articles in the larger work. A work of this kind must, of necessity, partake more or less of the nature of a compilation. Without claim to originality, I have endeavoured to bring to a focus materials gleaned from many various sources, as indicated by the list of books which I have consulted. There will, consequently, be found herein little, perhaps, which may not be read elsewhere; but many of the books and pamphlets which have been written on these Calendars are not easily accessible to the general reader, and in many, though rules are given and legal enactments respecting them are stated, the reasons for these rules and enactments are not fully and clearly described. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Calendar and Community traces the development of the Jewish calendar from its origins until it reached, in the tenth century CE, its present form. Drawing on a wide range of often neglected sources - literary, documentary, epigraphic, Jewish, Graeco-Roman and Christian - it is the first comprehensive work to have been written on the subject. It will be useful not only to historians and epigraphists for the interpretation of early Jewish datings, but also as a historical study of early Judaism in its own right. Its main theme is that the Jewish calendar evolved in the course of this period from considerable diversity (with a variety of solar and lunar calendars) to unity (with the normative rabbinic calendar). The unification of the calendar was one element in the unification of Jewish identity in later antiquity and the earlymedieval world.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: During the later Middle Ages (twelfth to fifteenth centuries), the study of chronology, astronomy, and scriptural exegesis among Christian scholars gave rise to Latin treatises that dealt specifically with the Jewish calendar and its adaptation to Christian purposes. In Medieval Latin Christian Texts on the Jewish Calendar C. Philipp E. Nothaft offers the first assessment of this phenomenon in the form of critical editions, English translations, and in-depth studies of five key texts, which together shed fascinating new light on the avenues of intellectual exchange between medieval Jews and Christians.

The emphasis is on Judaism, rather than on Jewish studies more broadly.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This expansive four-volume encyclopedia presents a broad introduction to Islam that enables learning about the fundamental role of Islam in world history and promotes greater respect for cultural diversity. One of the most popular and widespread religions in the world, Islam has attracted a great deal of attention in recent times, particularly in the Western world. With the ongoing tensions in the Middle East and a pervasive sense of hostility toward Arab Americans, there is ever increasing need to examine and understand Islam as a religion and historical force. Islam: A Worldwide Encyclopedia provides some 700 entries on Islam written by expert contributors that cover the religion from the birth of Islam to the present time. The set also includes 16 pages of color images per volume that serve to illustrate the diverse expressions of this important religious tradition. Each entry begins with a basic introduction, followed by a general discussion of the subject and a conclusion. Each entry also features a further readings list for readers. In addition to supplying a comprehensive, authoritative overview of Islam, this work also specifically addresses many controversial related issues, including jihad, violence in Islam, polygamy, and apostasy.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do we measure time in the way that we do? Why is a week seven days long? At what point did minutes and seconds come into being? Why are some calendars lunar and some solar? The organisation of time into hours, days, months and years seems immutable and universal, but is actually far more artificial than most people realise. The French Revolution resulted in a restructuring of the French calendar, and the Soviet Union experimented with five and then six-day weeks. Leofranc Holford-Strevens explores these questions using a range of fascinating examples from Ancient Rome and Julius Caesar's imposition of the Leap Year, to the 1920s' project for a fixed Easter. ABOUT THE SERIES: The Very Short Introductions series from Oxford University Press contains hundreds of titles in almost every subject area. These pocket-sized books are the perfect way to get ahead in a new subject quickly. Our expert authors combine facts, analysis, perspective, new ideas, and enthusiasm to make interesting and challenging topics highly readable.
