Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Grube Method In 1842 Grube issued his work entitled "Leitfaden fur das Rechnen in der Elementarschule," (Guide for Reckoning in the Primary School). This work introduced a new idea in teaching number; it carries forward the four processes, - addition, subtraction, multiplication and division at the same time. The effect of this was to revolutionize the method of teaching number in Germany; the methods now employed there are founded upon Grube's idea. Undoubtedly the inspiration of Grube's work was found in Pestalozzi, whose teachings deeply stirred Germany just before Grube came on the stage. Pestalozzi had learned from Rousseau that the proper teacher of children is Nature: that her laws and her methods are the only safe and sure guide. Grube made a practical use of it in his system of teaching number. He holds that the carrying of the four processes together, the mastering of each number as a step by itself, the use of objects leading from the concrete thing to the abstract number, is the order of nature. His method starts out with processes which are based entirely upon observation, but gradually objects are abandoned and a greater use made of the reasoning powers. Grube's system is planned to cover the first four years of school, and contemplates an equivalent of three hours per week for four years, during which the fundamental rules, compound numbers, and fractions are mastered. Dance is still an essential component of religious experience today, serving as a medium for communication with the supernatural. During the Late Classic period (AD 600-900), dance assumed additional importance in Maya royal courts through an association with feasting and gift exchange. These performances allowed rulers to forge political alliances and demonstrate their control of trade in luxury goods. The aesthetic values embodied in these performances were closely tied to Maya social structure, expressing notions of gender, rank, and status. Dance was thus not simply entertainment, but was fundamental to ancient Maya notions of social, religious, and political identity. Using an innovative interdisciplinary approach, Matthew Looper examines several types of data relevant to ancient Maya dance, including hieroglyphic texts, pictorial images in diverse media, and architecture. A series of case studies illustrates the application of various analytical methodologies and offers interpretations of the form, meaning, and social significance of dance performance. Although the nuances of movement in Maya dances are impossible to recover, Looper demonstrates that a wealth of other data survives which allows a detailed consideration of many aspects of performance. To Be Like Gods thus provides the first comprehensive interpretation of the role of dance in ancient Maya society and also serves as a model for comparative research in the archaeology of performance.

In order to gain greater understanding of the mechanisms of all critical revolutions, Rationalist Criticism in Greek Tragedy examines the late nineteenth-century 'rehabilitation' of Euripides. Some of the factors which contributed to the Euripidean revolution are well known, but one which is not-one which has been generally forgotten, when it has not actually been denied-is the role of Rationalist Criticism. Rationalist Criticism, founded and dominated by infamous Cambridge University Classicist and English scholar A. W. Verrall, was generally deprecated by mainstream classicists when it first appeared, and those who happen to come upon it today tend to treat it dismissively-a tendency the great classicist Eduard Fraenkel thought 'should be strongly resisted.' The influence of Rationalist Criticism-inside and outside of classical studies-has been much greater than has been generally supposed. James E. Ford makes the case for the larger significance of what Verrall and the Rationalist Critics were doing within the history not just of Euripidean criticism but of literary studies generally. Ford reads the rationalists on their own terms, drawing on the disciplines of the history of scholarship and the history and theory of literary criticism making this study unique. It should appeal to anyone interested in intellectual history, especially instances of significant intellectual changes (a la Kuhnian revolutions), and, especially, changes in the interpretation and evaluation of authors and their works. The work should be of specific interest to classicists, academic historians, and critical theorists.
