Book Synopsis Optical Communications by : Jürgen Franz
Download or read book Optical Communications written by Jürgen Franz and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2000 with total page 744 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The advantages of optical communications are many: ultra-high speed, highly reliable information transmission, and cost-effective modulation and transmission links to name but a few. It is no surprise that optical fiber communications systems are now in extensive use all over the world. Along with software and microelectronics, optical communication represents a key technology of modern telecommunication systems. Optical Communications: Components and Systems provides the basic material required for advanced study in theory and applications of optical fiber and space communication systems. After a review of some fundamental background material, component-based chapters discuss all relevant passive and active optical and optoelectronic components used in point-to-point links and in networks. Systems chapters address the analysis and optimization of both incoherent and coherent systems, introduce fiber optic link design, and discuss physical limits. The authors also provide an overview of applications such as optical networks and optical free-space communications. The advanced interactive multimedia communications of today and the future rely on optical fiber and space communication techniques. Optical Communications: Components and Systems offers engineers and physicists a working reference for the selection and design of optical communication systems and provides engineering students with a valuable text that prepares them for work in this essential and rapidly growing field.

Download or read book Fiber Optics and Optoelectronics written by R. P. Khare and published by Oxford University Press, USA. This book was released on 2004 with total page 442 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Developed for an introductory course, this up-to-date text discusses the major building blocks of present-day fibre-optic systems and presents their use in communications and sensing. Starting with easy-to-understand ray propagation in optical fibres, the book progresses towards the more complex topics of wave propagation in planar and cylindrical waveguides. Special emphasis has been given to the treatment of single-mode fibres, the backbone of present-day optical communication systems. It also offers a detailed treatment of the theory behind optoelectronic sources (LEDs and injection laser diodes), detectors, modulators, and optical amplifiers. Contemporary in terms of technology, it presents topics such as erbium-doped fibre amplifiers (EDFAs) and wavelength-division multiplexing (WDM) along with dense WDM. Building upon these fundamental principles, the book introduces the reader to system design considerations for analog and digital fibre-optic communications. Emphasis has also been given to fibre-optic sensors and laser-based systems along with their industrial and other applications. This student-friendly text is suitable for undergraduate students pursuing instrumentation, electronics, and communication engineering. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The use of optoelectronics for data communication is becoming increasingly important in the 1990s. Much of the base technology needed for this field was developed by the telecommunications industry, but there are important differences which are covered in this text. This is the first book to focus on the critical technology and application issues that are necessary to understand the optoelectronics for data communication industry, which is expected to grow exponentially during the coming years. Optoelectronics for Data Communication is an excellent reference for both researchers and engineers because it emphasizes fundamentals rather than more easily dated topics. The book focuses particular attention on practical engineering issues, making it invaluable to those who have worked or studied in the field of optoelectronics for telecommunication and are now moving to optoelectronics for data communication. Focuses on fundamentals of the field Reviews critical technologies and applications Explains important technology compatibility issues Includes chapters written by specialists in each area with emphasis on engineering issues and practical aspects Presents coverage of topics that are unique to optical data communications

Download or read book Fiber Optics written by Fedor Mitschke and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2010-01-14 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Telephone, telefax, email and internet - the key ingredient of the inner workings is the conduit: the line which is designed to carry massive amounts of data at breakneck speed. In their data-carrying capacity optical fiber lines beat other technologies (copper cable, microwave beacons, satellite links) hands down, at least in the long haul. This book is a comprehensive source about optical fibers: Their structure, their light-guiding mechanism, their material and manufacture, their use. Several effects tend to degrade the signal as it travels down the fiber: they are spelled out in detail. Nonlinear processes are given due consideration for a twofold reason: On one hand they are fundamentally different from the more familiar processes in electrical cable. On the other hand, they form the basis of particularly interesting and innovative applications, provided they are understood well enough. A case in point is the use of so-called solitons, i.e. special pulses of light which have the wonderful property of being able to heal after perturbation. The book starts with the physical basics of ray and beam optics, explains fiber structure and the functions of optical elements, and continues to the forefront of applications. The state of the art of high speed data transmission will be described, and the use of fiber optic sensors in metrology is treated. The book is written in a pedagogical style so that students of both physics and electrical engineering, as well as technicians and engineers involved in optical technologies, will benefit.
