Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This edition of the popular text incorporates recent advances in neurobiology enabled by modern molecular biology techniques. Understanding how the brain works from a molecular level allows research to better understand behaviours, cognition, and neuropathologies. Since the appearance six years ago of the second edition, much more has been learned about the molecular biology of development and its relations with early evolution. This "evodevo" (as it has come to be known) framework also has a great deal of bearing on our understanding of neuropathologies as dysfunction of early onset genes can cause neurodegeneration in later life. Advances in our understanding of the genomes and proteomes of a number of organisms also greatly influence our understanding of neurobiology. * Well known and widely used as a text throughout the UK, good reviews from students and lecturers. * Good complement to Fundementals of Psychopharmacology by Brian Leonard. This book will be of particular interest to biomedical undergraduates undertaking a neuroscience unit, neuroscience postgraduates, physiologists, pharmacologists. It is also a useful basic reference for university libraries. Maurice Elphick, Queen Mary, University of London "I do like this book and it is the recommended textbook for my course in Molecular Neuroscience. The major strength of the book is the overall simplicity of the format both in terms of layout and diagrams."

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few human enterprises have the impact and the influence that neuroscience has. We can now examine our highest functions and malfunctions, including the processes of learning, aging, and behavior. The knowledge gained gives mankind previously unimaginable power for improvement, but also great responsibility that the knowledge be used for beneficial, not harmful, purposes. The Handbook of Neurochemistry and Molecular Neurobiology focuses on available knowledge in neurochemistry and molecular biology of the nervous system. Successful research requires interdisciplinary teamwork, where the lines between neurochemistry and related areas are obscure and need to be crossed. This is reflected in the selection of the various volumes we know others could have been added, and it is likely that each volume could have been expanded to a set of volumes and that a detailed coverage of the field would require over 100 volumes. This may not have been practical or preferable, and it may be better to have a shorter overview of essential information, with guiding of the reader, if necessary, seeking more details in our ever-expanding and developing area of research. This edition, unlike the previous ones, will not be a static, but more a living set of chapters that will be updated. If needed, new chapters added on the website, even after the appearance of the printed version. The Handbook is intended to be a service to the neuroscience community, to help in finding available and useful information, to point out gaps in our knowledge, and to encourage continued studies. It represents the valuable contributions of the many authors of the chapters and the guidance of the editors and mostimportant, it represents support for research in this discipline. Based on the rapid advances in the years since the second edition, we can be very optimistic and hopeful that successful therapy for pathology, neural and behavioral (since they are interconnected), and perhaps even an expansion of learning, will be achieved, and described in the next edition.

Book excerpt: Neurochemistry, having the objective of elucidating biochemical processes subserving nervous activity, emerged as an application of chemistry to the of neurobiological problems as a post-World War II phenomenon. investigation However, only in the last 40 years has the chemical community recognized neurochemistry as a distinct, if hybrid, discipline. During this period great strides have been made. However, recently neurochemistry, along with neu rophysiology, neuropharmacology, neuroanatomy, and the behavioral sci ences, has emerged to form neuroscience, a new community of scientists with its own national society, journals, and meetings. Actually, this recently formed hybrid, neuroscience, is in the process of merging with another well-established discipline, molecular genetics (frequently called molecular biology, and itself a hybrid), which appears to have sufficient hybrid vigor to form yet a new community of scientists, which, for want of a more imaginative term, has been called molecular genetic neuroscience. Clearly, advantages resulting from such mergers or hybridizations accrue not only from the merging discipline (neurochemistry in this case) to the new community (molecular genetic neuroscience), but also in the reverse direction. This Foreword will be concerned primarily with examples of this latter process.

Book excerpt: An introduction to Molecular Neurobiology, is a textbook of contemporary cellular and molecular neurobiology written for advanced undergraduates, graduate students, and practising neurobiologists. This book describes the behaviour and properties of neurons and glia and how these arise from the molecules that constitute them. Major sections focus on the signals that neurons use and how they are produced, the molecular and cellular organization of neurons and glia, neuronal differentiation, synaptic plasticity, and the molecular basis of neuronal diseases. Each chapter is written by an expert in the field and gives an up-to-date account of major questions, experimental approaches, the present state of knowledge, and future directions. Boxes provide historical, technical, or biographical notes, and expand on points of particular interest to contemporary research. The book has been carefully edited to give uniformity of style and coverage, and is illustrated in two colours.

This book surveys the current state of knowledge in a number of areas of molecular neurobiology that includes the subcellular level of chromatin structure, complexity of RNA synthesis, role of hormones in cell differentiation, and molecular correlates between neuropeptides and behavior. A comprehensive review of procedures for the isolation of specific brain cells and their experimental use is also provided at the end of this text. This publication is useful to those working in the field of neurochemistry and those engaged in morphological and physiological approaches to the analysis of the nervous system, as well as molecular biologists and biochemists working with non-neural tissues.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book is a collection of papers describing some of the first attempts to apply the techniques of recombinant DNA and molecular biology to studies of the nervous system. We believe this is an important new direction for brain research that will eventually lead to insights not pos sible with more traditional approaches. At first glance, the marriage of molecular biology to brain research seems an unlikely one because of the tremendous disparity in the histories of these two disciplines and the problems they face. Molecular biology is by nature a reductionist approach to biology. Molecular biologists have always tried to attack central questions in the most direct approach possible, usually in the most simple system available: a bacterium or a bacterial virus. Important experiments can usually be repeated quickly and cheaply, in many cases by the latest group of graduate students entering the field. The success of molecular biology has been so profound because the result of each important experiment has made the next critical question obvious, and usually answerable, in short order. Studies of the nervous system have a very different history. First, the human brain is what really interests us and it is the most complex structure that we know in biology. The central question is clear: How do we carry out higher functions such as learning and thinking? How ever, at present there is no widely accepted and testable theory of learn ing and no clear path to such a theory.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Nerve cells - neurons - are arguably the most complex of all cells. From the action of these cells comes movement, thought and consciousness. It is a challenging task to understand what molecules direct the various diverse aspects of their function. This has produced an ever-increasing amount of molecular information about neurons, and only in Molecular Biology of the Neuron can a large part of this information be found in one source. In this book, a non-specialist can learn about the molecules that control information flow in the brain or the progress of brain disease in an approachable format, while the expert has access to a wealth of detailed information from a wide range of topics impacting on his or her field of endeavour. The text is designed to achieve a balance of accessibility and broad coverage with up-to-date molecular detail. In the six years since the first edition of Molecular Biology of the Neuron there has been an explosion in the molecular information about neurons that has been discovered, and this information is incorporated into this second edition. Entirely new chapters have been introduced where recent advances have made a new aspect of neuronal function more comprehensible at the molecular level. Written by leading researchers in the field, the book provides an essential overview of the molecular structure and function of neurons, and will be an invaluable tool to students and researchers alike.
