Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Glass and Glass Making It has been the object to present the contents of this volume in a series of plain, practical essays, arranged In succession, as it appears to the writer, that to properly understand the aggregation, and proportionate association, of the elements of glass, it is necessary to first understand its principles and characteristics. It IS for this reason that so much Space has been devoted to the more important characteristics of glass, as the principles of definite propor tion are dependent thereon. The various constituents of glass have also been given considerable space to afford a proper conception of their derivation, composition and effects, including simple tests and analyses for determining purity. An appendix has also been added, which contains miscellaneous information pertaining to the subject. All known works of authority have been consulted the preparation of this manuscript. Especial indebtedness is due to Mr. James Reed, who so generously contributed a large portion of the recipes contained In the work. In con elusion, the work IS designed for the practical glassmaker; and the author presents elements OF glass and glass making for his consideration, with the hope that, in some respect, it may contribute to the general fund of knowledge in glassmaking. Book Synopsis Glass by : Alan Macfarlane

Book excerpt: Picture, if you can, a world without glass. There would be no microscopes or telescopes, no sciences of microbiology or astronomy. People with poor vision would grope in the shadows, and planes, cars, and even electricity probably wouldn't exist. Artists would draw without the benefit of three-dimensional perspective, and ships would still be steered by what stars navigators could see through the naked eye. In Glass: A World History, Alan Macfarlane and Gerry Martin tell the fascinating story of how glass has revolutionized the way we see ourselves and the world around us. Starting ten thousand years ago with its invention in the Near East, Macfarlane and Martin trace the history of glass and its uses from the ancient civilizations of India, China, and Rome through western Europe during the Renaissance, Enlightenment, and Industrial Revolution, and finally up to the present day. The authors argue that glass played a key role not just in transforming humanity's relationship with the natural world, but also in the divergent courses of Eastern and Western civilizations. While all the societies that used glass first focused on its beauty in jewelry and other ornaments, and some later made it into bottles and other containers, only western Europeans further developed the use of glass for precise optics, mirrors, and windows. These technological innovations in glass, in turn, provided the foundations for European domination of the world in the several centuries following the Scientific Revolution. Clear, compelling, and quite provocative, Glass is an amazing biography of an equally amazing subject, a subject that has been central to every aspect of human history, from art and science to technology and medicine.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: New insights into the history of Islamic glassmaking The ancient glass industry changed dramatically towards the end of the first millennium. The Roman glassmaking tradition of mineral soda glass was increasingly supplanted by the use of plant ash as the main fluxing agent at the turn of the ninth century CE. Defining primary production groups of plant ash glass has been a challenge due to the high variability of raw materials and the smaller scale of production. Islamic Glass in the Making advocates a large-scale archaeometric approach to the history of Islamic glassmaking to trace the developments in the production, trade and consumption of vitreous materials between the eighth and twelfth centuries and to separate the norm from the exception. It proposes compositional discriminants to distinguish regional production groups, and provides insights into the organisation of the glass industry and commerce during the early Islamic period. The interdisciplinary approach leads to a holistic understanding of the development of Islamic glass; assemblages from the early Islamic period in Mesopotamia, Central Asia, Egypt, Greater Syria and Iberia are evaluated, and placed in the larger geopolitical context. In doing so, this book fills a gap in the present literature and advances a large-scale approach to the history of Islamic glass.
