A Variable is a quantity that is, or is supposed to be, continually changing in value. In general, constants are represented by the first letters of the alphabet, and variables by the last but they Should not, therefore, be confused with the known and unknown quantities of Algebra. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Differential Calculus An inverse Operation is the undoing Of what was done by the corresponding direct Operation, and it ends where the direct Operation began. It may also be defined as an Opera tion the effect Of which the direct Operation simply annuls. E.g., if y (11: b, then 3; is produced by performing a certain opera tion Upon x, viz. Multiplying it by a and adding 5 to the product. The inverse Operation consists in expressing a: in terms of y, and this is done by subtracting b from y and dividing the difference by a. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Differential Calculus: With Index ON first commencing to read the Differential Calculus, a subject which opens a wide field of analytical research, the student enters upon an entirely new system of thought. In his previous investigations he has always been accustomed to consider quantities, whether known or unknown, as having some fixed or determinate value; he has now to conceive the values of certain quantities to undergo continuous changes, and to operate upon these changes with new symbols and new processes, which in themselves have but a remote analogy to ordinary Algebra. Download or read book Elements of the Differential, and Integral Calculus (Revised written by William Anthony Granville and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-26 with total page 480 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Differential, and Integral Calculus (Revised: Edition) That teachers and students of the Calculus have shown such a generous appreciation of Granville's "Elements of the Differential and Integral Calculus" has been very gratifying to the author. In the last few years considerable progress has been made in the teaching of the elements of the Calculus, and in this revised edition of Granville's "Calculus" the latest and best methods are exhibited, - methods that have stood the test of actual classroom work. Those features of the first edition which contributed so much to its usefulness and popularity have been retained. The introductory matter has been cut down somewhat in order to get down to the real business of the Calculus sooner. As this is designed essentially for a drill book, the pedagogic principle that each result should be made intuitionally as well as analytically evident to the student has been kept constantly in mind. The object is not to teach the student to rely on his intuition, but, in some cases, to use this faculty in advance of analytical investigation. Graphical illustration has been drawn on very liberally. This Calculus is based on the method of limits and is divided into two main parts, - Differential Calculus and Integral Calculus. As special features, attention may be called to the effort to make perfectly clear the nature and extent of each new theorem, the large number of carefully graded exercises, and the summarizing into working rules of the methods of solving problems. In the Integral Calculus the notion of integration over a plane area has been much enlarged upon, and integration as the limit of a summation is constantly emphasized. The existence of the limit e has been assumed and its approximate value calculated from its graph. A large number of new examples have been added, both with and without answers. At the end of almost every chapter will be found a collection of miscellaneous examples. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of the Differential and Integral Calculus: Method of Rates This text-book is based on the method of rates, which, in the experience of the author, has proved most satisfactory in a first presentation of the object and scope of the Calculus. No comparisons have been made between this method and those of limits or of infinitesimals. This larger view of the Calculus, and of mathematical reasoning and processes in general, cannot readily be given with good results in the brief time allotted the subject in the general college course.
