Book Synopsis The Mathematical Writings of Évariste Galois by : Évariste Galois
Download or read book The Mathematical Writings of Évariste Galois written by Évariste Galois and published by European Mathematical Society. This book was released on 2011 with total page 426 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Before he died at the age of twenty, shot in a mysterious early-morning duel at the end of May 1832, Evariste Galois created mathematics that changed the direction of algebra. This book contains English translations of almost all the Galois material. The translations are presented alongside a new transcription of the original French and are enhanced by three levels of commentary. An introduction explains the context of Galois' work, the various publications in which it appears, and the vagaries of his manuscripts. Then there is a chapter in which the five mathematical articles published in his lifetime are reprinted. After that come the testamentary letter and the first memoir (in which Galois expounded on the ideas that led to Galois Theory), which are the most famous of the manuscripts. These are followed by the second memoir and other lesser known manuscripts. This book makes available to a wide mathematical and historical readership some of the most exciting mathematics of the first half of the nineteenth century, presented in its original form. The primary aim is to establish a text of what Galois wrote. The details of what he did, the proper evidence of his genius, deserve to be well understood and appreciated by mathematicians as well as historians of mathematics.

Book Synopsis Fields Medallists' Lectures by : Michael Atiyah
Download or read book Fields Medallists' Lectures written by Michael Atiyah and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 1997-10-13 with total page 644 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Although the Fields Medal does not have the same public recognition as the Nobel Prizes, they share a similar intellectual standing. It is restricted to one field - that of mathematics - and an age limit of 40 has become an accepted tradition. Mathematics has in the main been interpreted as pure mathematics, and this is not so unreasonable since major contributions in some applied areas can be (and have been) recognized with Nobel Prizes. The restriction to 40 years is of marginal significance, since most mathematicians have made their mark long before this age.A list of Fields Medallists and their contributions provides a bird's eye view of mathematics over the past 60 years. It highlights the areas in which, at various times, greatest progress has been made. This volume does not pretend to be comprehensive, nor is it a historical document. On the other hand, it presents contributions from 22 Fields Medallists and so provides a highly interesting and varied picture. The contributions themselves represent the choice of the individual Medallists. In some cases the articles relate directly to the work for which the Fields Medals were awarded. In other cases new articles have been produced which relate to more current interests of the Medallists. This indicates that while Fields Medallists must be under 40 at the time of the award, their mathematical development goes well past this age. In fact the age limit of 40 was chosen so that young mathematicians would be encouraged in their future work. The Fields Medallists' Lectures is now available on CD-ROM. Sections can be accessed at the touch of a button, and similar topics grouped together using advanced keyword searches.

This book was released on 2010-09-02 with total page 350 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This problem-solving book is an introduction to the study of Diophantine equations, a class of equations in which only integer solutions are allowed. The presentation features some classical Diophantine equations, including linear, Pythagorean, and some higher degree equations, as well as exponential Diophantine equations. Many of the selected exercises and problems are original or are presented with original solutions. An Introduction to Diophantine Equations: A Problem-Based Approach is intended for undergraduates, advanced high school students and teachers, mathematical contest participants — including Olympiad and Putnam competitors — as well as readers interested in essential mathematics. The work uniquely presents unconventional and non-routine examples, ideas, and techniques.

Book Synopsis List Decoding of Error-Correcting Codes by : Venkatesan Guruswami
Download or read book List Decoding of Error-Correcting Codes written by Venkatesan Guruswami and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2004-11-29 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This monograph is a thoroughly revised and extended version of the author's PhD thesis, which was selected as the winning thesis of the 2002 ACM Doctoral Dissertation Competition. Venkatesan Guruswami did his PhD work at the MIT with Madhu Sudan as thesis adviser. Starting with the seminal work of Shannon and Hamming, coding theory has generated a rich theory of error-correcting codes. This theory has traditionally gone hand in hand with the algorithmic theory of decoding that tackles the problem of recovering from the transmission errors efficiently. This book presents some spectacular new results in the area of decoding algorithms for error-correcting codes. Specificially, it shows how the notion of list-decoding can be applied to recover from far more errors, for a wide variety of error-correcting codes, than achievable before The style of the exposition is crisp and the enormous amount of information on combinatorial results, polynomial time list decoding algorithms, and applications is presented in well structured form.
