Book Synopsis Descriptive Geometry, The Spread of a Polytechnic Art by : Évelyne Barbin
Download or read book Descriptive Geometry, The Spread of a Polytechnic Art written by Évelyne Barbin and published by Springer. This book was released on 2019-07-01 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book seeks to explore the history of descriptive geometry in relation to its circulation in the 19th century, which had been favoured by the transfers of the model of the École Polytechnique to other countries. The book also covers the diffusion of its teaching from higher instruction to technical and secondary teaching. In relation to that, there is analysis of the role of the institution – similar but definitely not identical in the different countries – in the field under consideration. The book contains chapters focused on different countries, areas, and institutions, written by specialists of the history of the field. Insights on descriptive geometry are provided in the context of the mathematical aspect, the aspect of teaching in particular to non-mathematicians, and the institutions themselves.

Book excerpt: Contains 11 modules consist of a number of activities designed to demonstrate the use of the history of mathematics in the teaching of mathematics. Objectives of the Modules: To enable students to develop a much richer understanding of mathematics and its applications by viewing the same phenomena from multiple mathematical perspectives; To enable students to understand the historical background and connections among historical ideas leading to the development of mathematics; To enable students to see how mathematical concepts evolved over periods of time; To provide students with opportunities to apply their knowledge of mathematics to various concrete situations and problems in a historical context; To develop in students an appreciation of the history connected with the development of different mathematical concepts; To enable students to recognize and use connections among mathematical ideas; To enable students to understand how mathematical ideas interconnect and build on one another to produce a coherent whole; To lead students to recognize and apply mathematics in contexts outside of mathematics.--Publisher.

Book Synopsis Revolutions in Mathematics by : Donald Gillies
Download or read book Revolutions in Mathematics written by Donald Gillies and published by Oxford University Press on Demand. This book was released on 1995 with total page 353 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The essays in this book provide the first comprehensive treatment of the concept of revolution in mathematics. In 1962 an exciting discussion of revolutions in the natural sciences was prompted by the publication of Kuhn's The Structure of Scientific Revolutions. A fascinating but little knownoffshoot of this debate was begun in the USA in the mid-1970s: can the concept of revolutions be applied to mathematics as well as science? Michael Crowe declared that revolutions never occur in mathematics, while Joseph Dauben argued that there have been mathematical revolutions and gave someexamples. The original papers of Crowe, Dauben, and Mehrtens are reprinted in this book, together with additional chapters giving their current views. To this are added new contributions from nine further experts in the history of mathematics who each discuss an important episode and consider whether it was arevolution. This book is an excellent reference work and an ideal course text for both graduate and undergraduate courses in the history and philosophy of science and mathematics.
Book Synopsis Elementary Mathematics from a Higher Standpoint by : Felix Klein
Download or read book Elementary Mathematics from a Higher Standpoint written by Felix Klein and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-06-29 with total page 318 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: These three volumes constitute the first complete English translation of Felix Klein’s seminal series “Elementarmathematik vom höheren Standpunkte aus”. “Complete” has a twofold meaning here: First, there now exists a translation of volume III into English, while until today the only translation had been into Chinese. Second, the English versions of volume I and II had omitted several, even extended parts of the original, while we now present a complete revised translation into modern English. The volumes, first published between 1902 and 1908, are lecture notes of courses that Klein offered to future mathematics teachers, realizing a new form of teacher training that remained valid and effective until today: Klein leads the students to gain a more comprehensive and methodological point of view on school mathematics. The volumes enable us to understand Klein’s far-reaching conception of elementarisation, of the “elementary from a higher standpoint”, in its implementation for school mathematics./div This volume II presents a paradigmatic realisation of Klein’s approach of elementarisation for teacher education. It is shown how the various geometries, elaborated particularly since the beginning of the 19th century, are revealed as becoming unified in a new restructured geometry. As Klein liked to stress: “Projective geometry is all geometry”. Non-Euclidean geometry proves to constitute a part of this unifying process. The teaching of geometry is discussed in a separate chapter, which provides moreover important information on the history of geometry teaching and an international comparison.

Book Synopsis Six Septembers: Mathematics for the Humanist by : Patrick Juola
Download or read book Six Septembers: Mathematics for the Humanist written by Patrick Juola and published by Lulu.com. This book was released on 2017 with total page 432 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scholars of all stripes are turning their attention to materials that represent enormous opportunities for the future of humanistic inquiry. The purpose of this book is to impart the concepts that underlie the mathematics they are likely to encounter and to unfold the notation in a way that removes that particular barrier completely. This book is a primer for developing the skills to enable humanist scholars to address complicated technical material with confidence. This book, to put it plainly, is concerned with the things that the author of a technical article knows, but isn't saying. Like any field, mathematics operates under a regime of shared assumptions, and it is our purpose to elucidate some of those assumptions for the newcomer. The individual subjects we tackle are (in order): logic and proof, discrete mathematics, abstract algebra, probability and statistics, calculus, and differential equations.
