Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Theoretical Mechanics The primary aim of the present book is to supply for students beginning the study of Theoretical Mechanics a course of such a nature as shall emphasize the fundamental physical principles of the subject. Different students will of course approach the study of mechanics with different interests, different aims, and different amounts of mathematical equipment, so that it may not be possible to produce a single book which shall exactly fit the requirements of every class of student. But I believe that all students of mechanics, no matter what their aims and intentions may be, will be in the same position in one respect, namely that they will best begin the study of the subject by trying to acquire a firm grasp of the physical principles, leaving aside at first all mathematical developments and all practical applications, except in so far as these contribute to the elucidation of the fundamental physical principles. I am aware that this belief is not held by all teachers of mechanics, some of whom regard the laws of mechanics simply as working rules to be acquired as rapidly as possible for their utilitarian value, while others appear to regard them in the same light as the rules of a game, the game consisting in the solution of mathematical puzzles, most of which have no conceivable reference to the facts of nature. I find it hard to believe that there can be any considerable class of students for whom either of these points of view is the best. As regards the former, I feel that a student who cannot get, or does not wish to get, a clear understanding of mechanical principles would be well advised not to enter a profession in which his work will consist in the handling of mechanical problems; and as regards the latter, that a student who wishes merely to obtain material for puzzle solving would do better to turn his attention to chess or double acrostics. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theoretical Mechanics: An Elementary Treatise In preparing the present work, which was designed to include in a single volume of moderate compass the elementary portions of Theoretical Mechanics, no formal division of the subject into Kinematics, Statics and Kinetics has been made. The topics often included under the first head it was thought best to introduce separately, each at the point where it is required for immediate application to the treatment of the motions produced by forces. For example, the expressions for radial and transverse accelerations are not introduced until required in the discussion of Central Forces. The subject of Statics is, to be sure, to a large extent separable from the idea of motion. But, on the one hand, as has been recognized in all recent treatises, the fundamental notions of force are best presented, and the Parallelogram of Forces is best established, on the basis of the Laws of Motion. This requires what may be called a dynamical introduction to Statics. On the other hand, the subject cannot be completed without the Method of Virtual Velocities, an application of the Principle of Work. This principle, which is dynamical as involving forces acting through spaces, advantageously precedes the study of kinetics into which time enters explicitly, and prepares the student for the notion of Kinetic Energy, or work embodied in motion. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Mechanics As the entire work may be found to constitute too exten sive a course for those students who can devote but a limited time to the study of Mechanics, it was thought expedient to indicate such of the more difficult subjects as might be omitted. These subjects are designated in the table of con tents by being printed in italics; and they will be found to be unnecessary in enabling the student to comprehend those which follow. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theoretical Mechanics: An Elementary Text-Book In a first course in Theoretical Mechanics the primary object to be gained by the student is a thorough grasp of fundamental princi ples. In most cases it is impossible to go beyond this object in the time available for the course. In the preparation of this text-book, the aim has been to present the fundamental principles in as clear and simple a manner as possible, and to enforce them by a sufficient number of illustrative examples; The examples are for the most part simple applications of the theory presented in the text, many numerical exercises being included. The solution of exercises in volving numerical data forms a part of the work of the student of which the importance should be emphasized. In the desire to cover as much ground as - possible, such work is too apt to be neglected. The mathematical training required for using the book is that usually implied by an elementary knowledge of Differential and Inte gral Calculus. The most essential portions of Part I (statics) may, however, be read without such knowledge. As regards arrangement, the aim has been to observe the order of difficulty of the different topics treated, so far as this was possible without doing violence to the logical relations. This is one reason for placing Statics first, instead of treating it in its strictly logical position as a special case of Kinetics. Part II may, however, be read before Part I, if any teacher should prefer this order. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Analytic Mechanics: With Numerous Examples The present work on Analytic Mechanics or Dynamics is designed as a text-book for the students of Scientific Schools and Colleges, who have received training in the elements of Analytic Geometry and the Calculus. Dynamics is here used in its true sense as the science of force. The tendency among the best and most logical writers of the present day appears to be to use this term for the science of Analytic Mechanics, while the branch formerly called Dynamics is now termed Kinetics. The treatise is intended especially for beginners in this branch of science. It involves the use of Analytic Geometry and the Calculus. The analytic method has been chiefly adhered to, as being better adapted to the treatment of the subject, more general in its application and more fruitful in results than the geometric method; and yet where a geometric proof seemed preferable it has been Introduced. The aim has been to make every principle clear and intelligible, to develop the different theories with simplicity, and to explain fully the meaning and use of the various analytic expressions in which the principles are embodied. The book consists of three parts. Part I, with the exception of a preliminary chapter devoted to definitions and fundamental principles, is entirely given to Statics. Part II is occupied with Kinematics, and the principles of this important branch of mathematics are so treated that the student may enter upon the study of Kinetics with clear notions of motion, velocity and acceleration. Part III treats of the Kinetics of a particle and of rigid bodies. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
