The physical cause of this sensation is called heat. A piece of iron which has been exposed to the air in Britain will generally feel cold. If we hold for some time in the right hand a piece of iron which feels hot, and then grasp the right hand with the left, the left hand will experience a sensation of heat, or the right hand will feel hot to the left, and at the same time the left hand will feel cold to the right. The same will be true if we hold for some time in the right hand any other body which feels hot. The fact that the right hand feels hot to the left after holding the hot iron, while it may have felt neither hot nor cold before, proves that the hand has received heat from the iron. We therefore infer that when a body feels hot to the hand, it imparts heat to the hand while touching it. It then follows that, because the right hand feels hot to the left hand, heat must pass from the right hand to the left. But the left hand feels cold to the right hand, and associating this sensation with what we have just proved; viz., that heat passes from the right hand to the left, we infer that a body feels cold to the hand when heat passes from the hand to the body. We may arrive at the same conclusion by holding in the right hand a piece of very cold iron, after which the right hand will feel cold to the left, and the left hand warm to the right. In consequence many teachers have arranged for their pupils courses of practical instruction designed to illustrate the fundamental principles of the subject they teach. The portions of the following book designated Experiments have for the most part been in use for some time as a Practical Course for Medical Students at the Cavendish Laboratory. The rest of the book contains the explanation of the theory of those experiments, and an account of the deductions from them; these have formed my lectures to the same class. It has been my object in the lectures to avoid elaborate apparatus and to make the whole as simple as possible. Most of the lecture experiments are performed with the apparatus which is afterwards used by the class, and as far as possible the theoretical consequences are deduced from the results of these experiments. In order to deal with classes of considerable size it is necessary to multiply the apparatus to a large extent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Lessons in Heat The preface to the first edition of this book read as follows: "These lessons have been prepared to meet the necessities of a very short course of study at the Military Academy in this branch of physics, a course so short that it can command for study and recitation only about seventy hours from the cadets. "In selecting the material, I have been guided by the consideration of what is applicable to the subsequent courses of study at the Academy and also of what is essential and most useful for the student to know. In the arrangement I have kept in view facility of acquirement and thorough understanding, and, accordingly, the logical connection of the facts and principles set forth. "In the exposition of the subjects treated, I have aimed at clearness and conciseness, and have omitted detailed descriptions of investigations and of apparatus as entirely as is consistent with the foregoing objects. Most of the experimental illustrations described or referred to are such as can be performed in the lecture-room." The preface to the second edition contained this statement: "In the use of the book experience has shown that many of the subjects touched upon are pregnant with suggestions to the pupils, and there is a great temptation to treat them more fully; but the object for which the lessons were prepared and the time that can be devoted to them, as stated in the preface to the first edition, are barriers to a more extended treatment, or to a different apportionment of space to the subjects treated." The same necessities, conditions and objects as set forth in the above extracts have been the governing factors in this revision for the third edition, and they have prescribed the same limitations and general treatment as in the previous editions.
