Book excerpt: Bringing families and schools together has long been acknowledged as a factor that has a positive correlation with a young adolescent's academic achievement (Brough & Irvin, 2001; Epstein, 1990; Sheldon, 2016). At the same time, families become less engaged with schools during the middle grades. The purpose of this study was to explore parent perspectives of family engagement across their child's school transition from fifth grade in an elementary school to sixth grade in a middle school. In particular, this study sought to answer two specific research questions: (1) What are parent perspectives regarding the supports of family engagement across the school transition from elementary school to middle school? (2) What are parent perspectives of barriers to family engagement across the school transition from elementary school to middle school? Through a multi-case study design, four parent participants of sixth grade middle school students in Northeast Georgia, during the 2016-2017 school year, described their experiences. Parent perspectives were first investigated separately using within-case analysis to gain insight into their family engagement experiences with one middle school and what experiences they believed served as supports and barriers to their engaging with the middle school. Participants' perspectives were next investigated in a cross-case analysis to determine what similarities and differences of supports and barriers to family engagement across the school transition from elementary to middle school existed. Three overall themes surrounding the supports and barriers to family engagement across the school transition from elementary school to middle school emerged: (1) communication; (2) school climate, programming, and events; and (3) prior experiences. This study makes practical contributions for both research and practice in the field of school transitions and family engagement. Parent participants overwhelmingly believed elementary and middle schools involved in school transition should focus on clear, consistent, concise communication between families and schools. According to participants, schools should reach out to parents for assistance and advice to improve family engagement across the transition from elementary to middle school.

Recently, efforts to support transitions have become part of effective schooling practices. This research study was designed to investigate the extent to which transition practices and transition activities differed in schools of varying achievement levels. A survey was conducted at nine middle schools located in the surrounding suburban areas of Charlotte, North Carolina. Data were collected from sixth grade teachers, counselors, and administrators at three different schools representing three different achievement categories (i.e., high, expected, and low growth) as determined by the North Carolina ABC accountability program. Similarities and differences were analyzed for critical elements necessary for effective transition practices in four areas: communication, cooperation, consensus, and commitment. Additional comparisons were completed for transition activities provided at the schools. No significant differences were found in transition practices across achievement categories. High and expected growth schools were more likely to host a field trip of fifth graders in the spring than low growth schools. Implications are discussed for improving elementary to middle school transition programs.

Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to investigate school transition from elementary to middle school from the perceptions of economically disadvantaged students. Through the investigation, a determination was made on whether there is a difference in the level of connectedness among economically disadvantaged students between the low performing and higher performing schools. The study was a quantitative research design. The target population of the study was economically disadvantaged students in four middle schools in an urban school district located in the central region of the state. All of the four middle schools contained sixth through eighth-grade configurations and were designated as Title I schools at the time of the study. The target population consisted of 682 sixth grade students enrolled in the participating four middle schools during fall 2016. Survey data were obtained from 331 students or 49% of the student population. The school district administered the survey online, with students in the designated grades completing the survey in class on school-owned computers. The response rate of 49% was based on the total sixth-grade population of these four schools and the number of completed surveys. The Student Transition Questionnaire used to collect data on the perceptions of middle school students about transitioning from elementary to middle school, was developed by Akos (2002). This study found that there was no significant difference in the level of connectedness between economically disadvantaged students at low-performing and higher performing schools. The researcher does note that the items that fostered connectedness differed for this population at the lower performing and higher performing schools.
