Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Chemistry: The Principles of Qualitative Analysis The second part is devoted to methods of Analysis. Here he is first instructed in the properties of a few of the constituents of common salts, and is taught methods for their separation or identification in presence of one another. If he goes no further than this he will at least have learnt what chemical analysis means. He afterwards proceeds to extend his knowledge, till at the end of the course he will be able to analyse any mixture of ordinary inorganic substances. The analytical part is to a great extent shorn of directions for manipulation, as well as of details which are not relevant to the immediate object of the experiment. According to my experience these are not only of no use, but are a positive hindrance to the apprehension of the facts to be acquired. Manipulation can only be learnt properly under personal instruction by a competent teacher, and more will be accomplished by letting the beginner see once for all how a thing is to be done than by whole volumes of printed directions. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Qualitative Analysis: A Laboratory Guide Tms manual is offered as a laboratory guide for stu dents of qualitative analysis who have had a year's work in general chemistry. It is the outgrowth of several years' experience with students registered in the varied courses of a university curriculum. The aim in the prep aration of the book has been to systematize the work as much as possible, yet to avoid encouraging rule of thumb work in the laboratory. Our viewpoint has been to give a sufficient number of well-organized characteristic reactions accompanied by appropriate questions to stimulate and encourage analytical thinking. The attempt is made to bring out the value of differential behavior toward reagents early so that the student has at the commencement of his qualitative study an idea of the ultimate application of the reactions. We do not deem the study of the reactions used in the schemes followed in the systematic procedure for the analysis of unknowns sufficient to give the student a grasp of qualitative analysis. The use of analytical questions bearing on the reactions studied has an inesti mable value in the student's analytical training and greatly broadens his knowledge of the chemistry of the metals. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Organic Analysis: An Elementary Course in the Identification of Organic Compounds The teaching of Qualitative Organic Analysis is gradually receiving recognition as an important factor in the training Of the chemist. In 1905, the subject was taught in only two or three universities; ten years later courses were offered in from fifteen to twenty of the leading schools in this country; and in 1918 the subject was prescribed for all colleges undertaking the training of chemists under the supervision of the United States Government. Only the armistice prevented the institution of this sweeping innovation in chemical curricula. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Analysis for Secondary Schools Descriptive Chemistry of the metals to be separated should be studied hand in hand with the Qualitative Analysis. A careful statement of each step of the analysis, and infer ences drawn in the laboratory at the time of the experiments, should be recorded in the notebook. In the case of the known solutions, the teacher should mark the notebooks for neatness, order, and accuracy. In the case of the unknown solutions, credit should be given for neatness, order, accuracy of record, and results of analysis. It is highly desirable that the teacher should question each individual at his work at least once during each laboratory period, and give the student credit for his knowledge of the work. This method, carefully followed, will prevent a mechanical application of directions on the part of the student. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Analysis: A Manual for the Use of Students of Chemistry in Schools and Colleges The purpose of the authors has been to prepare a work on qualitative analysis that shall be both exact and compendious, avoiding on the one hand the diffuseness of the larger treatises and on the other the incompleteness of the smaller manuals. Full statement has been made of the behavior of the bases toward certain reagents, but extraneous details have been omitted. Under the headings Methods of Analysis explicit directions have been given for the separation and detection of the elements, and these directions are followed in every case by a full discussion of the reasons for the different steps and of the difficulties that may arise in the course of analysis. It is hoped that this method of presentation, together with the occasional references to such articles in chemical journals as deal with debated points or new methods, may serve to arouse the interest of the student and to discourage on his part a blind and mechanical style of work that is so common in courses in qualitative analysis and is so greatly to be deplored. The Introduction discusses in considerable detail the principles and operations involved in qualitative analysis, but it does not include the consideration of the dissociation theory. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Qualitative Analysis Two reasons have led to the writing of this book. One has been the desire to give to my classes a scheme for quali tative analysis in which points where a beginner is liable to make mistakes are especially guarded by careful and explicit directions for procedure. In this respect the book is the result of considerable experience with classes in the labora tory, where especial pains have been taken to discover the reasons for errors on the part of ordinary students. Quali tative analysis is of no value unless it leads to certain results, and the beginner needs to have it impressed upon his mind that certainty can only be attained by performing each operation in exactly the right way. In the author's opinion it is better to teach the student the right way at first, rather than to give only an outline and expect him to fill in the details of manipulation for himself. Every one who has had experience in the matter knows, however, that no amount of careful direction in a text-book can supply the place of constant watchfulness on the part of the instructor. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Laboratory Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis for Students of Pharmacy Qualitative analysis is of use to the pharmacist in testing chemicals for identity and purity. The study of the subject is also Of value because Of the practical knowledge of chemicals and chemical processes acquired by the student, and because it gives training in careful observation and develops the reasoning powers as they are exercised in the interpretation of results. This Manual was prepared as a guide for the author's own classes, and the objects sought are to acquaint the student with the general methods Of qualitative analysis and to prepare him to carry out such qualitative tests as the pharmacist may be called upon to make. The course is arranged to include one hour of lecture, one hour of recitation and about three hours of laboratory work per week for one school year. Practice on the analysis of unknown solutions is provided for throughout the course. This is important, as it not only increases the interest of the student in the work but also develops his self-reliance by constantly putting him upon his own responsibility in doing his work and in interpreting his results. The introductory section on the theory Of chemistry may be omitted if it is not necessary for the class to study or review this part of the subject. The Manual is in no sense a reference book, and in general only those things are included that are needed as a guide for the labora tory work, or which may easily be learned in connection with this work. A standard reference book on qualitative analysis will be Of great service while taking the course, and such a reference book is indispensable for anyone who is to pursue the-subject further. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Outline of Qualitative Analysis: For Beginners The desire to place in the hands of my students who are beginning the study of Qualitative Analysis a clear, concise, and simple Outline of the subject, has led me to the preparation of this little work. Much that is found even in elementary books is purposely omitted in this. Manipulation can only be satisfactorily learned from practical demonstration. Writing of equations and drawing up of analytical tables are valuable exercises for the student. Hence the little book presents only an Outline, which is to be filled in by the student with the teacher's assistance. The method which its arrangement suggests has been chosen as the one best calculated to give the student an intelligent grasp of the subject, and help him to become more than a mere analytical machine. The student is expected to make all the reactions and express them in written equations. When this has been done for the members of a group of metals, a few solutions, each containing one or more members of the group, are given and analyzed according to the directions. The exercises on the group are then to be worked out. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elements of Qualitative and Quantitative Chemical Analysis In this work the author has brought together what has already been published, separately, in the Manual of Qualitative Chemical Analysis, by himself and Dr. S. M. Babcock, and the Notes on Chemical Analysis, by himself alone; he has added thereto much matter on qualitative analysis, all of Parts III and IV on quantitative analysis, and nearly all of Part V. Of course no such work as this can be satisfactorily prepared without frequent reference to the standard treatises of Prescott and Johnson, and of Fresenius, in one of which the whole subject of qualitative analysis is very thoroughly treated, and in the other both qualitative and quantitative analysis. The author would acknowledge his indebtedness to these works, while claiming for himself at least some novelty in the arrange ment of the matter, as well as in some of the matter itself, in this attempt to prepare a book that is much needed in his own laboratory. Also, for valuable suggestions in the revision of the work for this edition, he is indebted to Professor Dennis, and Instructors Chamot and Smith, of the University. Certain modifications in the spelling of chemical terms, adopted, after very careful consideration, by the Chemical Sec tion of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, are used in this book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Qualitative Analysis: As a Laboratory Basis for the Study of General Inorganic Chemistry This text presents the course of instruction given by the author to the freshman classes at the University of California where the exigencies of vocational courses render it impracticable for a large number of students to devote more than one year to general inorganic chemistry and to qualitative analysis as well. Therefore, the scheme of qualitative analysis is made to serve as a means of correlating the apparently independent experiments of general chemistry. Thus, while the end in view is primarily the imparting of a knowledge of the general subject, familiarity with analytical methods is obtained. The course presupposes good chemical training in the secondary schools, many of its briefer statements being in the nature of a review rather than of first presentation. No attempt has been made to emasculate the work by eliminating the consideration of more difficult points. On the other hand, the tests for individual elements have been varied in order to familiarize the student with as many significant reactions as possible. In the opinion of the author, instruction in science should endeavor to equip the student with principles rather than facts and, what is of still greater import, it should train him in the use of these principles and in the application of them in explaining the phenomena of general experience. The acquisition of relatively large numbers of facts or the memorizing of printed rules and laws is a matter of comparatively easy accomplishment. The ability to analyze a situation and to recognize the underlying principle comes less readily. Still more difficult of acquirement is that mental habit which consistently seeks the explanation of the unfamiliar by means of the well-known. In the author's experience, furthermore, students know facts but lack the perspective which gives the appreciation of relative values. Their facts are for the most part individual units, like so many loose beads without any connecting thread by means of which the whole may be viewed as a unit and the relation of the individuals, each to the other, recognized. From certain of the many books at present on the market a good student may learn much chemistry; but the author has found it necessary to supply in lecture form the correlating factors and to keep pointing out the application of general principles to cases not less typical than the stereotyped illustration discussed in the text.
