With this object in view, I have devoted the greater part of the space at my disposal to a consideration of those groups of fossil animals which are most useful to the stratigraphist, and have treated very briefly, those which are of interest mainly to the zoologist. My plan has been to give, in each group, first an account of its general zoological features with a full description of the hard parts, secondly the classification and characters of those genera which are important geologically, and thirdly a sketch of the present and past distribution of the group. Since Palaeontology can be learnt only by students who have access to a collection of fossils, I have purposely refrained from using figures to illustrate genera, and have confined myself to those required to explain structure and terminology. In chapters one and two the eight sections of the most important portion of the gorge of Eighteen Mile Creek and those of the Lake Shore, are considered in detail. Lists of fossils found in the various beds are not given, but such lists will be found in the author's paper on the F aunas of the Hamilton Group of Eighteen Mile Creek and Vicinity. As far as this guide treats of the Hamilton group, it is based directly on that paper. And constant references are made to it in the text. In chapter three of Part I., an attempt is made to present in popular form the succession of geological events in this region, as revealed in the sections described in the earlier chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Geology The steady demand for thirty editions of this work, during the last twenty years, has called for frequent revisions, lest it should fall behind the state of the science. In making the present revision - so rapidly has geology advanced of late - we found it desirable to rewrite nearly the whole, as we have done. We have also modified the plan not a little, to give it greater unity. Some of the old Sections have been left out, but more new ones added. The wood-cut illustrations have been increased from 208 to 418. We have tried to reduce the size of the work, by leaving out every thing not indispensable. But the great amount of new matter and of new illustrations, as well as the expansion of the typography to improve the appearance, have well nigh thwarted our efforts. We are aware that teachers sometimes can not find time to carry their pupils through the whole of a science which so abounds in facts and important applications as does geology. Two methods have been adopted by authors to meet this difficulty. One is, to leave out a large part of the science, and retain only the most striking and brilliant parts. But this is too much like attempting to perform the play of Hamlet with Hamlet left out. And teachers and pupils ought to know, that the study of such abridgments does not make them acquainted with geology, which still remains to be learned.
