Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Palaeontology for Geological Students In the following pages I have endeavoured to give an elementary account of Invertebrate Palaeontology, adapted to the requirements of geological students. With this object in view, I have devoted the greater part of the space at my disposal to a consideration of those groups of fossil animals which are most useful to the stratigraphist, and have treated very briefly, those which are of interest mainly to the zoologist. My plan has been to give, in each group, first an account of its general zoological features with a full description of the hard parts, secondly the classification and characters of those genera which are important geologically, and thirdly a sketch of the present and past distribution of the group. Since Palaeontology can be learnt only by students who have access to a collection of fossils, I have purposely refrained from using figures to illustrate genera, and have confined myself to those required to explain structure and terminology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Geology and Palaeontology of Eighteen Mile Creek and the Lake Shore Sections of Erie County, New York: A Hand-Book for the Use of Students and Amateurs This book is intended as the first of a series of hand-books of local geology, which treat the subject with special reference to the needs of the student. The advantage of beginning the study of geology with the special consideration of a selected field, instead of the general text-book study, must be apparent, even though it seems like a complete inversion of the normal order of procedure. In order that the student who comes to the field without a preliminary training in geology may take up the subject intelligently, the first portion of the introductory chapter of Part I. Is devoted to a brief consideration of the elementary geological principles involved in the structure of the region under consideration. Hence no apology is needed for the introduction of such matters here. In chapters one and two the eight sections of the most important portion of the gorge of Eighteen Mile Creek and those of the Lake Shore, are considered in detail. Lists of fossils found in the various beds are not given, but such lists will be found in the author's paper on the F aunas of the Hamilton Group of Eighteen Mile Creek and Vicinity. As far as this guide treats of the Hamilton group, it is based directly on that paper. And constant references are made to it in the text. In chapter three of Part I., an attempt is made to present in popular form the succession of geological events in this region, as revealed in the sections described in the earlier chapters. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North American Geology and Palaeontology: For the Use of Amateurs, Students, and Scientists A general knowledge of Geology is probably of greater importance to the people of the United States than a like amount of information in any other department of natural science; but every' one will admit the state of learning in this branch is not of a very high grade. There is a common complaint among well-informed people who have given Geology no special study that the language used is technical, the names long, difficult to understand, and not unfrequently bear upon their face the evidence of affectation, as if, those coining, the words had attempted to make them as obscure as possible. It is a fact, however, that technical names are absolutely essential to a correct understanding of every branch of Natural History; and when the system of nomenclature is once learned the names are readily understood, and much more easily remembered, than the arbitrary names of individual things possibly can be. In this work an effort has been made to popularize the rules of nomenclature, and to define the technical words in the text or in the Glossary. As assist ant in the geological survey of Vermont, a large part of the last three years has been devoted by him to the study of the rocks in the mountains, and in writing out their de scriptions. Should it happen, as most likely it will, that this is the last revision of the work I shall ever make, and he should survive me, I trust he will be found fully com petent to keep the work up to the advancing state of the science, should the public call for its continued publication. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Geology The steady demand for thirty editions of this work, during the last twenty years, has called for frequent revisions, lest it should fall behind the state of the science. In making the present revision - so rapidly has geology advanced of late - we found it desirable to rewrite nearly the whole, as we have done. We have also modified the plan not a little, to give it greater unity. Some of the old Sections have been left out, but more new ones added. The wood-cut illustrations have been increased from 208 to 418. We have tried to reduce the size of the work, by leaving out every thing not indispensable. But the great amount of new matter and of new illustrations, as well as the expansion of the typography to improve the appearance, have well nigh thwarted our efforts. We are aware that teachers sometimes can not find time to carry their pupils through the whole of a science which so abounds in facts and important applications as does geology. Two methods have been adopted by authors to meet this difficulty. One is, to leave out a large part of the science, and retain only the most striking and brilliant parts. But this is too much like attempting to perform the play of Hamlet with Hamlet left out. And teachers and pupils ought to know, that the study of such abridgments does not make them acquainted with geology, which still remains to be learned. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Introduction to Historical Geology With Special Reference to North America IT is the author's h0pe that this book may find a place as a class-book dealing with the historical geology portion of a one-year course in general geology, and that it may also serve as a text for special courses in historical geology. An elementary knowledge of what is generally comprised under dynamical and structural geology is presupposed. It is assumed that a proper amount of laboratory and field work will be pursued in connection with the text.
