Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: An Elementary Text-Book of Anatomy, Physiology, and Hygiene From a considerable experience with both very elementary and more advanced classes, the author has been led to certain con elusions in regard to the teaching of elementary physiology and hygiene. It is not proposed to enter here into a discussion of the correctness of these conclusions, but a brief statement of a few principles that seem fundamental may perhaps be allowable. The chief object of teaching physiology in the public schools is to train the pupils to keep their bodies in health. The mere teaching of anatomy and physiology will not accomplish this, for the pupil cannot master the structure and workings of the body in a way that will enable him to frame the laws of health and apply them. Neither can the desired end be reached by teach ing rules of health without an anatomical and physiological basis; for without such a basis, hygiene is an intangible and an elusive subject. The author has therefore concluded that a conservative middle course is wiser than either of the extremes of method mentioned above. An elementary text in physiology should be a balanced text, containing sufficient anatomy to make clear the broader outlines of the structure of the human body, enough physiology to make plain the great laws according to which the body lives, and a full discussion of how a violation of these laws may be avoided. For the introduction of certain new matter, as, for example, the cell idea, the work of enzymes, and matter relating to germ diseases, there is little need for explanation. The groundwork of physiology and pathology has in recent years so shifted and extended itself, that the subject-matter of an elementary course must to a considerable extent be altered if it is to furnish 3. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Treatise on Human Physiology, on the Basis of the Précis Elémentaire De Physiologie In the year 1822, the undersigned published a translation of The Summary of Physiology by M. Magendie. It was most favourably received by the profession, two large editions having been rapidly disposed of. For reasons over which the editor had no control, and which are at present unimwrtant to the public, no new edition of this translation has appeared since the second. The original work, however, has gone through several large editions with increasing reputation, and now occupies the highest rank among standard works, not only in France, but throughout Europe. Since the period alluded to, the science of Physiology has undergone, on many points, a complete revo lution, in the accomplishment of which M. Magendie has acted a very conspicuous part. Since the death of Sir Charles Bell. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Primary Lessons in Human Physiology A word about the anatomical and other terms used in this little book. The author agrees with those who oppose the introduction of terms which can have no meaning to the pupils after fair attention is given to the subject. But it is certainly a mistake to avoid the use of words which are very convenient terms for things that have been actually seen. It is also a mistake to substitute terms not in common use for those that are the real names of the parts, on a supposition that it is easier for the children. The fact is that such a custom makes the work harder for the pupils. The terms used in this book, as the author knows by actual experience with children, are as easily learned as any terms when the thing named is seen and its use is understood. They are certainly fewer in number and as much within the powers of the pupils as are those in the other subjects in the school, num ber, language, and history, for example. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Anatomy, Physiology and Hygiene for Higher Grammar Grades Physiology is a most important branch Of the biological division of the natural sciences. Besides making a large part of both botany and zoology, it is set apart as a science by itself, devoted to the discussion of the functions of living matter. The nature work of the lower school grades leads naturally and logically to physiology, for which it forms a necessary basis. The subject of human physiology is the most important part of the nature study of the schools. It introduces the pupil to the physical house in which he must abide while he lives in this world and, with hygiene, to the essential conditions of highest attainment. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Practical Physiology This book has been prepared with a View of presenting to young students the important facts and principles of human physiology in a concise and intelligible form. In it I have attempted, not only to supply the information which such students need, but also to lead them to think as they acquire their knowledge of the subject. The work meets all the requirements of Stage I. (the Elementary Stage), as set forth in the syllabus issued by the Board of Education, and in similar syllabuses of other examine ing bodies. As. It is intended as a first work on the subject, the anatomy or structure of the body and its organs is described so far as this is necessary to the understanding of their func tions. This includes some account Of the cell, for an elemen tary knowledge of cells and the minute structure of tissues is now essential in order to have any intelligent comprehension of the working of the body and its parts. A large number of illustrations, many of them new in an elementary work like this, have been supplied. A few of these are coloured to further increase their usefulness. Much can be learnt by an attentive study of these figures, and the reader is advised to examine them, with their accompanying descriptions, repeatedly, care being taken to distinguish between a diagram (see Glossary) and an actual drawing of a part. An acquaintance with at least the existence of frontier interests, and even a participation de tactu with science at its growing surface, cannot be excluded from the laboratories of a medical school without serious and immediate loss to the interests of medicine and of surgery. With regard to the plan of construction of this book. The chapter headings are intended to serve a double purpose: as a summary or syllabus - being, in fact, the condensed lecture-syllabus that I have used during the last nine years; and as a means of self-examination. A student having read certain paragraphs or chapters, should return to the chapter heading, and find by its re capitulation whether it contains expressions that are meaningless to him, or whether it recalls a series of ideas that he has understood and assimilated. If an unfamiliar technical word is met with, its meaning should be ascertained at some other part of the book, through the index. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Human Physiology: A Text-Book for High Schools and Colleges Those who are pursuing researches in the chemistry of living things are more and more definitely separated from those whose studies are physical. It is scarcely possible to be an authority in both subdivisions. Specialization constantly becomes more pronounced. For example, the subject of the electric phenomena which can be observed in living tissues is extensive enough by itself to engage the exclusive attention of many students. Methods in Physiology. - Somet_hing must now be said of the methods which physiologists employ. Evidently they must work upon living matter since their interest is in the reactions which are peculiar to it. It does not follow that they always make use of intact organisms for the living state may often be protracted for some time in portions of animals (or plants) detached from the body. Thus the muscles of a frog's leg can be preserved for hours after separation from the other systems and will behave in much the same way as if they were still united with them. This property of survival, which is so valuable to experimenters, is much more to be relied on in the so-called cold - blooded than in the warm-blooded animals.
