Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary French Reader With regard to beginners, 13ve may say that the only stu dents who really need 3 Reader are those who begin td study F rench two or three years before entering college, or those who have to take F rench at college; younger pupils are likely to require different books. The high-school or college student, for whom the present book is chiefly intended, needs texts varied in tone. Be sides the usual anecdotes from modern authors, he should read, ih the early period of his instruction, few pages from great thinkers and historians. Extracts from writers of the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries have been introduced here for that purpose. The F rench of that period does not differ materially from the French of to-day. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary French: The Essentials of French Grammar With Exercises This text-book for beginners is an outgrowth of Foundations of Franck. When a revision of this was first undertaken, the purpose was to adapt it to a wider range of use by the insertion of a greater variety of exercises and the addition of vocabularies. So many incidental alterations and additions have attended the work that an entirely new book has resulted. However, the logical arrangement of topics, and the clearness and simplicity of statement that characterized the earlier volume, are every where retained. At the present time the ideas of American teachers are begin ning to be fairly in accord touching the content of the elementary course in French. To meet the demands of this course is the aim of this book, as its title indicates, and it seeks to accomplish little more. It does endeavor, nevertheless, by the character and quantity of material presented, to secure sufficient flexibility to meet, as fully as may be, the diverse conditions that the American educational system presents. Such variations appear in the time allowed by the curriculum, the maturity of the class, the imme diate aim of the work, and the method of the teacher. The exer cises will readily lend themselves to the molding hand of. The instructor who strives to impart a practical command of the living language. The book is equally well adapted to serve in a second ary school and to constitute the nucleus of the first year's work in a college course that does not demand French for entrance. It can be completed in a year and leave ample time for the reading of easy French texts. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Easy First French Reader: With Exercises Based on the d104 Though there is no lack of tales and short stories written purposely for French children, yet very few of them would suit the young pupils of our schools who begin the study of the French language. At the age of fourteen or thereabouts, boys and girls are no longer interested in fairy-tales, and can already find pleasure in the reading of texts of greater literary value. These, however, in their original form, are so replete with idiomatic phrases, peculiar structural forms, delicate shades of thought and expression, and irregular verbs, that they would surely prove too difficult for beginners of average talent. To obviate this difficulty, great care has been taken, first, in selecting the subject-matter of this little volume, and, secondly, in adapting it to the capacity of those for whom it is intended. While preserving all the characteristic charm of the original narratives by Octave Feuillet, E. Laboulaye, Hegesippe Moreau, Felix Gras and others, the editor has not scrupled to take the liberty of cutting out condensing, and altering such parts and to such an extent as his purpose required. Thus the text will be found easy and progressive, proceeding from the very simple to the more difficult by a regular gradation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Le Francais Et Sa Patrie: For Elementary Reading In Schools And Colleges In this book the author has attempted to present French which will be easy enough for use early in the first year of study, and at the same time be of interest to the pupils. Both teachers and pupils will certainly welcome information concerning the people whose language they are studying. This is an account of French life by one who has enjoyed among French people, and who wrote the book while studying in Paris or traveling in the country. The first part of the book is in the form of conversa tions and tells the experiences day by day of two young men who are visiting Paris. They do not go to out - of the-way places, but they do see the important places and observe the things which a wide - awake young per son is sure to notice in a strange city. Part II is in the form of letters, written by one of the two young men, some to his friend, now in London. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A French Reader: With Phonetic Transcriptions For First Year Students The publication of this reader is due to a strong belief in the great importance of reading in French instruction in America, and to a desire to provide, in the first year, more interesting and worthy texts, which will be an incentive to the student to continue his work in this field. There is no doubt that our recent intimate relations with France have given a new impetus to the study of the French language, and especially to the practice of speaking and writing it. This is to be applauded. However, we should not forget that the greatest value for the majority who study French in this country will always be a knowledge of French life, thought and literature, which comes almost entirely through reading. We wish then to offer, as early as possible, interesting reading that has such value, knowing that the time of our students for French study is usually all too brief, and that the number of other subjects competing for their attention is all too great. Without doubt, the great majority of college students who do not find their French reading interesting the first year fail to continue the language. French teachers will not need to be told that much of the material in this reader is not new. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The High School French Reader: With Vocabulary And Notes In compiling the High School French Reader the editors have had in view the requirements of elementary classes in French, and of candidates for Third Class Teachers' certificate in the Province of Ontario. With regard to its general scope and design, the Reader is intended not only to afford the beginner practice in translation and the means of obtaining familiarity with grammatical forms and construction, but also to serve as an introduction to French literature. It is believed that these two objects are not incompatible, and that it is quite possible for the beginner, while dealing primarily with the mechanism of the language, to obtain incidentally some little appreciation of the beauties of literary French. The four parts into which the Reader is divided are progressive in order of difficulty. Part I., introductory in its nature, has purposely been made as simple as possible in language, while the thought is either simple in itself or already familiar. The fact is recognized that the student is here struggling chiefly with the grammatical form, and should not be further embarrassed by difficulties of subject matter and idiom. Two well known fairy-tales, 'Little Red-Riding-Rood' and 'Puss in Boots, ' form an easy transition to the short stories from modern authors, of which Part II. is chiefly made up. To this part has been allotted the largest space, both because it is hoped the reader will be encouraged by the interest of the narrative and also because the principal effort of the beginner should be directed to a mastery of the current language of the present day. Part III. is devoted to prose extracts representing a few celebrated names. These extracts will give the reader a glimpse at least of the vast field of French prose literature, and will afford some little practice in translating the various literary styles. In Part IV. will be found a few specimens of lyric poetry. It was felt that in a French Reader, however small, this important department of literature should not be wholly ignored.
