Book excerpt: This extraordinary book covers the extremely broad subject of electropharmacology-defined here as the application of principles and methods of electrochemistry to biological topics associated with the action of drugs. It focuses on the physical principles of the movement of electrical charges across interfaces in pharmacological phenomena. It also covers drugs and the electrical procedures which modify a natural process having an electrochemical basis or component. This outstanding report studies the pharmacologically important properties and effects by electrochemical methods, the electrochemical alternatives or adjuncts to drug therapy, and the pharmacology involved. Easy to read and understand, this is an ideal reference for all researchers and practitioners of pharmacology and related fields.

Expert researchers in basic physiology, pharmacology, clinical cardiology, and heart surgery discuss their opinions in four areas of cardiac drug and therapy development: molecular morphology and regulation of potassium channels mode of actions and potential usefulness of specific bradycardic agents as well as potassium channel openers cellular and clinical pharmacology of amiodarone and new Class-III antiarrhythmic drugs advantages and disadvantages of newly introduced non-pharmacological therapy of arrhythmias such as implantable cardioverter defibrillators, catheter ablation, and surgery Recent Progress in Electropharmacology of the Heart is a valuable reference for medical students and residents, senior investigators and researchers, and cardiologists who need an up-to-date source on the current drug treatment of arrhythmias and ischemic heart disease.
Download or read book Cardiac Pacing written by Steinbach and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 944 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Proceedings of a congress serve the purpose to provide the reader with the latest know ledge in the specific field. They present at least for a limited time period a reference book that allows rapid access to the latest information for the medical profession and for an ongoing of future research. This volume is addressed not only to the participants of the VIIth World Symposium on Cardiac Pacing but to everybody involved in diagnostic and therapeutic cardiac stimula tion. The experience has shown that proceedings of conferences of comparable size are usually published with a considerable time delay limiting its value as a source of prime informa tion. The editors of this volume decided therefore, that their most important task was to guarantee the actuality of the publication. Even if it seems desirable to include as many presentations of a conference as possible, the large number of excellent presentations at the VIIth World Symposium on Cardiac Pacing, 337 oral presentations and 236 posters, could not be published within an accepta ble time period. The experience from previous conferences has shown that a book which includes all the papers can only be edited with a large delay, which reduces the value and actuality of the information.

Book Synopsis Neurotransmitter Actions in the Vertebrate Nervous System by : Michael Rogawski
Download or read book Neurotransmitter Actions in the Vertebrate Nervous System written by Michael Rogawski and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 525 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Intercellular communication via bioactive substances occurs in virtually all multicellular systems. Chemical neurotransmission in the vertebrate nervous system represents a form of signaling of this type. The biology of chemical neurotransmission is complex, involving transmitter synthesis, transport, and release by the presynaptic neuron; signal generation in the target tissue; and mechanisms for termination of the response. The focus of this book is on one aspect of this scheme: the diverse electrophysiological effects induced by different neurotransmitters on targets cells. In recent years, astonishing progress has been made in elucidating the specific physiological signals mediated by neurotransmitters in the verte brate nervous system, yet, in our view, this has not been adequately recog nized, perhaps because the new concepts have yet to filter into neuroscience textbooks. Nevertheless, the principles of neurotransmitter action are critical to advances in many areas of neuroscience, including molecular neurobiol ogy, neurochemistry, neuropharmacology, physiological psychology, and clinical neuroscience. It was the need for a sourcebook that prompted us to engage a group of neurophysiologists to prepare the chapters in this volume. However, there was an additional reason for this book: more and more it seemed that the field, if not yet having reached maturity, at least was ap proaching adolescence, with strengths in some areas and healthy conflicts in others. At this stage of development a textbook can help to define a field, clarify problems to be resolved, and identify areas for future investigation.

Book Synopsis Surface Electrochemistry by : John O'M. Bockris
Download or read book Surface Electrochemistry written by John O'M. Bockris and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-03-07 with total page 1040 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The text Modern Electrochemistry (authored by J. O'M. Bockris and A. K. N. Reddy and published by Plenum Press in 1970) was written between 1967 and 1969. The concept for it arose in 1962 in the Energy Conversion Center at the University of Pennsylvania, and it was intended to act as a base for interdisciplinary students and mature scientists~hemists, physicists, biologists, metallurgists, and engineers-who wanted to know about electrochemical energy conversion and storage. In writing the book, the stress, therefore, was placed above all on lucidity in teaching physical electrochemistry from the beginning. Although this fundamentally undergraduate text continues to find purchasers 20 years after its birth, it has long been clear that a modernized edition should be written, and the plans to do so were the origin of the present book. However, if a new Bockris and Reddy was to be prepared and include the advances of the last 20 years, with the same degree of lucidity as characterized the first one, the depth of the development would have to be well short of that needed by professional electrochemists.
