Book excerpt: The proceedings of the Third Summer Colloquium on Electronic Transition Lasers, held in September 1976, are being brought together in ELECTRONIC TRANSITION LASERS II. As in previous years, the colloquium concentrates on rare-gas-halide excimer lasers and chemiluminescent reactions of potential laser utility; metal vapor systems and optically pumped diatomic lasers also received attention. Contrary to previous colloquia, in this volume less emphasis is placed on the exploration of new systems and more on quantitative gain measurements and modelling. These fifty papers have been grouped into five parts: (1) Rare Gases, Oxides, and Halides; (2) Chemiluminescent Systems; (3) Metal Vapors; (4) Halogen and Chalcogen Systems; and (5) Other Potential Laser Systems. The conference took place simultaneously with the "Laser 77, International Congress and Trade Fair" at the Munich Fair Ground. The meeting was a continuation of a series of colloquia on elec tronic transition lasers previously held in the United States. The main topics of the conference were: high-power VUV, UV, visible and IR la sers, including an analysis of laser systems, technology and laser con cepts. Also, some applications to nonlinear optics, chemical kinetics and spectroscopy, particularly with respect to isotope separation, were discussed. The conference was attended by 95 scientists representing Austria, Canada, England, Finland, Germany (FRG), Germany (GDR), France, Israel, Italy, The Netherlands, and the U.S.A. The organizers acknowledge financial support from the Deutsche Forschungs gemeinschaft, the U.S. Air Force Office of Scientific Research, the U.S. Air Force European Office of Aerospace Research and Development (EOARD) and the U.S. Army European Research Office, as well as from the companies Coherent Radiation, Spectra Physics and Cryophysics. Furthermore, we thank our colleagues Dr. Steven N. Suchard and Professor Jeffrey I. Steinfeld for coordinating the U.S. contribution to the conference. We are grateful to Frau Maischberger for administrative assistance.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We report experimental and analytical studies aimed at development of visible chemical lasers. During this periodm intracavity dye laser measurements of a Ba + N2O flame revealed absorption on several BaO transitions and indicated large concentrations of Ba and Ba(+) metastables. Additional measurements on Ba + N2O in a heat-pipe-oven reactor confirmed the dominant role of metal atom density on BaO photon yield, and showed that current kinetic models are inadequate. Imposition of microwave and dc electric fields on a Ba + N2O flame decreased BaO emission, thus reducing hopes for a hybrid discharge-chemical laser. A shock tube program was initiated to study premixed, pulsed reactions of volatile encapsulated metals with oxidizers. So far, we have examined (Ni(CO)4 with N2O and NF3 and Sn(CH3)4 with N2O. Molecular emission from these reactions was much weaker than anticipated. In particular, we observed only SnO(D-X) bands rather than the a-X and A-X bands expected on the basis of flame studies. An analysis of the excited molecular state production expected from atom association reactions in a shock tube-expansion nozzle environment indicates that the maximum gain expected is less than 10 to the minus 6th power per cm. Thus, this does not appear to be a feasible approach to development of visible chemical lasers. (Author).

Book excerpt: Lasers continue to be an amazingly robust field of activity. Anyone seeking a photon source is now confronted with an enormous number of possible lasers and laser wavelengths to choose from, but no single, comprehensive source to help them make that choice. The Handbook of Lasers provides an authoritative compilation of lasers, their properties, and original references in a readily accessible form. Organized by lasing media-solids, liquids, and gases-each section is subdivided into distinct laser types. Each type carries a brief description, followed by tables listing the lasing element or medium, host, lasing transition and wavelength, operating properties, primary literature citations, and, for broadband lasers, reported tuning ranges. The importance and value of the Handbook of Lasers cannot be overstated. Serving as both an archive and as an indicator of emerging trends, it reflects the state of knowledge and development in the field, provides a rapid means of obtaining reference data, and offers a pathway to the literature. It contains data useful for comparison with predictions and for developing models of processes, and may reveal fundamental inconsistencies or conflicts in the data.

This book was released on 1976 with total page 114 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This report consists of two parts. Part I describes the program to develop a kinetic model for the energy flow in electron-beam pumped rare gas-halide lasers. The experimental program involves observations of fluorescence from argon/krypton/fluorine mixtures pumped by a short pulse electron beam. In addition to the emissions at 193 nm (ArF) and 248 nm (KrF) the authors observe significant broad band emissions near 290 nm and 400 nm which they assign to Ar2F and Kr2F. The important reactions that form ArF and KrF are also discussed in this report. Part II summarizes the status of electronic-transition chemical laser development. There has not yet been a demonstration of gain in a visible chemical laser systems, and it appears unlikely that practical lasers of this type will be developed in the near future. Substantial progress has been made toward understanding the kinetics of highly exothermic reactions, but a complete knowledge of any one system is still to be achieved.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In June 1984 a conference on visible and IR tunable solid-state lasers was held in La Jolla, California. The proceedings were published as the first volume of this series, Tunable Solid State Lasers *. The emphasis of this meeting focused on discerning unified themes in the generic areas of: - Laser host/dopant identification and growth procedures, - Theoretical analysis to elucidate fundamental tunable laser principles, - Experimental investigations on laser spectroscopy to which theoretical analyses and models can be anchored, and - Auxiliary technology developments in efficient laser pumping sources (diodes, ftashlamps). Subsequent to the La Jolla conference, two topical meetings were held, co-sponsored by the Lasers and Electro-Optics Society of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers, and the Optical Society of America (OSA). The contents of Tunable Solid-State Lasers II comprise the pro ceedings of the second of these two, held at Rippling River Resort, Zigzag, Oregon, June 4-6, 1986. In addition to the four areas of attention in the La Jolla meeting, pa pers on color-center and new rare-earth lasers, and on nonlinear frequency shifting were also given. In a fashion similar to the previous meetings, the informal atmosphere of the conference and meeting site was conducive to constructive interaction among the attendees. A total of 54 papers were scheduled for presentation, 20 of which were invited and 34 contributed.

We identified a bound-continuum X-A as well as possible bound-bound transitions which could absorb at the B-X lasing energy in Group II b-halides. Figure 1 shows the bound-continuum absorption transition for HgCl. Experimental evidence for these transitions is non-existent and ab initio calculations are required to obtain the spectroscopic properties of these systems. We can note parenthetically that the determination of the energies and spectroscopic properties of excimer and ion-pair type electronic transition lasers has relied heavily on ab initio calculation. A well-defined calculation scheme has been developed which is applicable over the entire periodic table. Relativistic -dependent pseudopotentials have been used in the calculation of the electronic structure and transition moments of HgCl. Compact but accurate bases have been determined variationally at the double zeta plus polarization level. The final wave functions, energies, and properties have been obtained at the first-order configuration interaction level of accuracy. Because pseudopotentials are used, the paraphanelia of computing the wavefunctions such as trial inputs and configuration interaction formula tapes are identical for all Group II b-halides, which would permit straight-forward extension of the HgCl results.
