Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this publication is to provide a 'one stop' guide to business information, insofar as that is possible within the confines of a useable book. It aims to give guidance on both the published and organisational sources relevant to the needs of the non-professional business researcher and provides a listing of 'worthwhile' references and contacts. As previously, the Directory is organised so that both published sources and information centres are grouped together under their applicable Standard Industrial Classification (SIC) number and heading. This new edition also incorporates NACE classification and correlation tables. The second category again includes those UK and pan-national organisations which focus on specific, discrete industry sectors, which limits the number of organisational sources in the directory to those that are 'most worthwhile'.

Book excerpt: First published in 1992, the aim of this volume is to provide an introduction to the range of UK published statistical sources now available to business users. It is not a comprehensive review of UK statistical publishing but a guide to key sources of information in selected subject areas of particular relevance to business users. The coverage, content, methods of collection and limitations of major titles and services in each subject area are described. Published statistics are important sources of information for business and industry and most statistics either come from official sources, produced by central government, or non-official sources such as trade associations, professional bodies, market research organizations and economic research institutes. Examples are used to show the strengths and weaknesses of statistical sources and to compare different sources. A bibliography of all the sources mentioned is included at the end of the book; Appendix 1 gives the names and addresses of contacts for further information and Appendix 2 is a list of selected abbreviations and acronyms.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The motivation for this book comes from the apparent inability of existing orthodox location theory to throw light on a series of location-production problems which are typically faced by modem manufacturing and distribution ftrms. These problems are related to the treatment of time by ftrms, who normally view time costs in terms of inventory costs. From this perspective, traditional industrial location and linkage analysis can be re-cast in a form in which space time problems can be dealt with in a unifted manner. The role played by input factor prices and market prices in location behaviour becomes dependent on the relationship between the frequency of shipment and the distance of shipment. This approach provides new insights into the relationship between the optimal location of the ftrm and the value-added by the ftrm, under conditions of either ftxed or varying local factor prices. The approach can then also be extended to discuss the of the spatial changes involved in the new Just-In-Time (JIT) production question philosophy. I would like to acknowledge the many helpful discussions I have had with Bernard Fingleton, Masahisa Fujita, Geoff Hewings, John McCombie, Ron Miller, John Parr, Tony E. Smith, and my colleagues at the University of Reading. Book excerpt: Reviews of United Kingdom Statistical Sources are comprehensive and authoritative surveys of the economic and social statistics for the United Kingdom. They are indispensable to anyone who needs to gain a thorough understanding of the sources for the study of the area under consideration. This volume is concerned with the key area of investment in research and development activity. It considers the approaches adopted to the measurement of the level and nature of R&D. The real levels of commitment to R&D form strategic information for business enterprise and governments who are increasingly concerned about quality competition. In particular it reviews expenditure and manpowere measures of R&D activity. The detailed listings are preceded by definitions of R&D related to the sciope and limitations of the data collected. All those working on technological change and industrial economics will need this book.

Book excerpt: Turkey's economy is a complex mix of modern industry, a traditional agricultural sector, and a rapidly growing private sector. At the same time the country is positioning itself and preparing for entry into the European Union. That Turkey should meet her national economic goals is, therefore, particularly important. A vital factor in achieving these will be the country's regional economies and their associated economic policies. To date, however, many of the policy interventions adopted have been based on models drawn from developed economies and the outcome has raised a number of concerns. Are policy interventions drawn from advanced economies appropriate for transitional economies such as Turkey? Aksel Ersoy's book is the first work to explore the dynamics of local and regional development in Turkey. In addition, he offers a new theoretical framework for understanding the local and regional dynamics of emerging and transitional economies more generally.

Book excerpt: Originally published in 1988, this book explores how new technologies, industrial innovation and the growth of high technology industry have affected regional employment and economic change in different European countries. It discusses the factors which make some areas better suited than others to the development of the new industries, emphasising how fuctional integration and dependence upon highly-qualified manpower tend to concentrate these industries in particular locations. Attempts to encourage innovation and the development of high technology industry in old industrial areas are discussed, with particular reference to the role of large firms, training programmes and government policies.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Once acting as local representatives of the national government and content to let their larger counterparts do the "heavy lifting", state and provincial governments are increasingly expected to be stewards of their economies and deliver sustained growth rates for their citizens. Spurred on by increasing competition, not least from neighbouring territories, sub-national governments are increasingly formulating their own plans for economic development, taking out loans, investing in specialist facilities, and establishing marketing offices abroad. Despite this increasingly challenging environment, there is little research on what sub-national governments can or should do to catalyze the development of their economies. Focussing on the electronics sector, this book draws together ten cases of promising states or provinces largely, but not exclusively, from Asia. These dynamic regions have managed to outcompete the primary economic and political centres of power in their countries and are negotiating their own entry into one of the most challenging and demanding sectors. In exploring the issues of agency, autonomy, and state-business relations at the sub-national level, this book aims to shed light on a vital, but overlooked topic.
