Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Animal identification (ID) refers to keeping records on individual farm animals or groups of farm animals so that they can be easily tracked from their birth through the marketing chain. Historically, animal ID was used to indicate ownership and prevent theft, but the reasons for identifying and tracking animals have evolved to include rapid response to animal health and/or food safety concerns. As such, traceability is limited specifically to movements from the animal's point of birth to its slaughter and processing location. On February 5, 2010, Secretary of Agriculture Tom Vilsack announced that USDA was revising its approach to achieving a national capability for animal disease traceability. The previous plan, called the National Animal Identification System (NAIS), first proposed in 2002, was being abandoned. In its place USDA proposed a new approach--Animal Disease Traceability--that will allow individual states and tribal nations to choose their own degree of within-state animal identification and traceability for livestock populations. The within-state programs are intended to be implemented by the states and tribal nations, not the federal government. As such, any data collection and storage would be done by state, not federal, authorities. The flexibility is intended to allow each state or tribal nation to ...

Future challenges and opportunities for further development of ICAR and the definition of the future scenarios in the animal recording sector are also described. A special section is dedicated to 'Improving the health traits by recording and evaluation', where the past and future of animal recording and the use of animal recording data for genetic evaluation and breeding are defined. Another section deals with the 'ICAR Reference Laboratory Network', where the reference systems, the principles and the practices for calibration system for routine milk testing are presented. The publication ends with the national statistics on the 'Yearly enquiry on the situation of milk recording in member countries' for the years 2003 and 2004. A total of 45 pages describes the methodologies used at national level for milk recording, the national data for milk production, the costs of recording and the productivity and numbers of recorded cattle at national level (divided by species and by herdbook)."

Book excerpt: Electronic identification of animals is being developed in Europe and the United States along two lines. Individual animal identification for herd management is being developed primarily for dairy herds of less than one thousand animals. The motivation for this developmental work is to provide more efficient production and records' management within the dairy operation. The other line of development is for tracing the movement of animals through commerce, so that effective disease-control measures can be initiated quickly. Both types of systems have reached the stage where they must be seriously considered as possible systems for widespread use. It is time for uniform standards to be developed for both types of systems, and preparations for incorporating electronic identification into existing regulatory practices at both state and federal levels.
