Book excerpt: Carbon nanotubes (CNTs) are promising materials for future nanoelectronic applications thanks to their excellent electrical and thermal transport properties and the quasi one-dimensional nanostructure. However, there are many structural forms of CNTs and each has its own properties. Correlation of structure and electrical transport properties is still ambiguous. In this thesis, a novel design of field-effect transistor is proposed and constructed. This unique device architecture allows us not only to investigate the electrical transport properties of the nanotubes, but also to characterize atomic structures of the same nanotubes by transmission electron microscopy (TEM). The results obtained form the combined electrical transport measurements and structural characterizations are presented. The current-voltage (I-V) characteristics are interpreted in terms of structural forms of nanotubes. Examples include single-walled nanotube with an intramolecular junction, double-walled nanotube, and nanotube bundles. Depending on the tube configuration with respect to the external electric field, the I-V characteristics are dramatically changed. Comparison with ab initio simulations done at North Carolina State University show that the screening of the electric field breaks the cylindrical symmetry of the tubes and affects their band structure, which is supported by experiments. These results emphasize the importance of atomic structure characterization to our understanding of the electrical transport properties of nanotubes and provide a general approach for future studies of structure-property relationships in 1D nanostructures.

Book excerpt: Low dimensional materials have been under intense theoretical and experimental investigation, due to the profound effects of confinement on electrons and atoms, which in turn leads to new electronic, thermal and mechanical properties not found in bulk systems. This dissertation focuses on electrical transport properties of a one-dimensional system, typified by ultrahigh quality carbon nanotubes (CNT), and two-dimensional system of atomically thin black phosphorus (BP) sheets. In the first part of this dissertation, we explore the transport properties of hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)-encapsulated CNT with zero-dimensional (0D) contacts. A CNT is an 1D allotrope of carbon, providing a prototypical 1D system for fundamental research of low-dimensional phenomena, as well as a strong candidate for commercialization as next-generation electronic circuit elements and interconnects. Unfortunately, current CNT device performance is limited to 25 μA (~1 mW breakdown power) per shell by substrate effects, which hinder its adoption into the aforementioned high-power/high-current applications. By substrate (hexagonal boron nitride (hBN)) and (0D) contact engineering, we observed a significantly enhanced current carrying capacity in hBN-encapsulated 0D-contacted CNT devices. These devices can carry up to 6-7 times the maximum current and up to an order of magnitude increase in breakdown power compared to SiO2-supported CNT devices. The heat dissipation mechanism appears to be a complicated affair of substrate, contact, and channel effects. The exact mechanism remains to be pinpointed, though for double-walled CNT cooling via the metal contacts seems to be the dominant process.
