Book excerpt: The research being carried out at Penn State by Winter and Alston addresses the fundamental processes of electron transfer, ionization, and excitation in ion-atom (and ion-ion) collisions. The focus is on intermediate- and higher-energy collisions, corresponding to proton energies of about 25 kilo-electron-volts (keV) or larger. At intermediate energies, where the transition probabilities are not small, many states must be coupled in a large calculation, while at higher energies, perturbative approaches may be used. Several studies have been carried out in the current three-year period; most of these treat systems with only one or two electrons, so that fewer approximations need be made and the basic collisional mechanisms can be more clearly described.

Attention is focussed on one- and two-electron systems and, more recently, quasi-one-electron systems whose electron-target-ion core can be accurately modeled by one-electron potentials. The basic computational approaches can then be taken with few, if any, approximations, and the underlying collisional mechanisms can be more clearly revealed. At intermediate collision energies (e.g., proton energies for p-He collisions on the order of 100 kilo-electron volts), many electronic states are strongly coupled during the collision, a coupled-state approach, such as a coupled-Sturmian-pseudostate approach, is appropriate. At higher collision energies (million electron-volt energies) the coupling is weaker with, however, many more states being coupled together, so that high-order perturbation theory is essential.

A review of progress made in the 1980s for calculations on electron impact excitation of atoms and ions for low and intermediate energy ranges concludes that the effect of continuum channels is very important to include in close coupling calculations. This may be achieved by use of pseudostates or the coupled-channels optical-potential method or the intermediate energy R-matrix method. Those methods have been applied mainly to electron atom scattering to date and much remains to be accomplished in electron-ion scattering. Further, for multicharged ions, contributions of excitation-autoionization and resonant-excitation-double-autoionization to total ionization cross sections are important and underscore the role of two-electron correlation effects.

Book excerpt: This report summarizes the progress and accomplishments in accelerator atomic physics research supported by DOE grant DE-FG02-87ER13778 from March 16, 1991 through March 15, 1992. This work involves the experimental investigation of fundamental atomic processes in collisions of charged projectiles with neutral targets or electrons, with particular emphasis on two-electron interactions and electron correlation effects. Processes involving combinations of excitation, ionization, and charge transfer are investigated utilizing coincidence techniques in which projectiles charge-changing events are associated with x-ray emission, target recoil ions, or electron emission. New results have been obtained for studies involving (1) resonant recombination of atomic ions, (2) double ionization of helium, and (3) continuum electron emission. Experiments were conducted using accelerators at the Lawrence Berkeley Laboratory, Argonne National Laboratory, Michigan State University, Western Michigan University, and the Institute of Nuclear Research, Debrecen, Hungary. Brief summaries of work completed and work in progress are given in this report.

Book excerpt: The current focus of the research is low-energy (collision v“bound v{sub e}) inelastic collisions for selected systems that possess the characteristic that many intermediate states are strongly coupled, such as can occur in classes of excited-atom (including Rydberg atom) collisions with atoms, molecules and positive and negative ions: (1) We are interested in the dependence of various differential and total cross sections on the angular momentum of the initial excited state and on the alignment of the initial electron charge distribution (for non-spherical initially excited states). (2) We wish to understand how characteristics of the classical trajectories (in CTMC calculations), e.g. multiple encounters, quasi-periodicity, chaos, relate to characteristics of the probability (scattering) amplitudes obtained from semiclassical (quantum mechanical) treatments. (3) In particular, in order to investigate a range of ''interaction regimes, '' we have proposed to study low-Rydberg-atom collisions with: ions and polar molecules (long range interaction); non-polar molecules and atoms (short-range interaction); as well as electron-attaching atoms/molecules (transient electron capture possible). (4) We plan to look for observable signatures of possibly novel intracollisional interference effects and quasi-vibrational resonance effects that may occur in low-Rydberg collisions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the final report of research activities supported by the most recent grant to the theoretical atomic collision physics program at Rice University. For this most recent 3-year grant, the focus has been the study of excitation and charge-transfer in atom-atom and ion-atom collisions. Emphasis has been placed on low-velocity collision processes involving initially excited atoms, including ''low Rydberg'' atoms. Two particular objectives of this research were to examine the dependence of state-changing collision cross sections and other observables on the orientation and alignment of the initial excited orbitals and to look for ''intracollisional interference'' effects, speculated to arise from spatially separated interactions during a collision involving a highly excited atom. A number of radiative and non-radiative charge transfer studies involving ground-state atoms and ions were continued from the previous grant period. Several unanticipated personnel changes prevented execution of some of the proposed research, including the studies of collisions involving negative ions and electron-attaching atoms and the development of new theoretical techniques for handling the ''strong coupling'' regime. These remain challenging and fundamentally important research topics. Research highlights briefly described in the report deal with: spherical and non-spherical low-Rydberg atom collisions; alignment effects in collisions of Na(3p) with He ions; near-resonant electron capture at very low energies; ion-atom and ion-molecule collisions, including electron capture; and low- energy processes involving collisions of H with He, Na, and K atoms. The report also lists publications since 1991 reporting on the grant work.

Electron impact elastic, excitation, and total cross sections for K were investigated by using elaborate Cl target wave functions in the close-coupling approximation. Photoionization cross sections from ground-state Na were calculated near the 2s22p53s and 2s2p63s inner-shell thresholds; also, the photoionization cross sections of excited 3p 2P{sup o} and 3d 2D states were calculated with the R-matrix methodology near the 2s2p63s thresholds. A numerical approach was developed to calculate the charge transfer matrix elements for ion-atom(ion) collisions; this was used for the proton-hydrogen collision problem as an illustration.

Book excerpt: A study of the double ionization of He by high-energy N{sup 7+} ions was extended up in energy to 40 MeV/amu. Coincidence time-of-flight studies of multicharged N2, O2, and CO molecular ions produced in collisions with 97-MeV Ar{sup 14+} ions were completed. Analysis of the total kinetic energy distributions and comparison with the available data for CO{sup 2+} and CO{sup 3+} from synchrotron radiation experiments led to the conclusion that ionization by Ar-ion impact populates states having considerably higher excitation energies than those accessed by photoionization. The dissociation fractions for CO{sup 1+} and CO{sup 2+} molecular ions, and the branching ratios for the most prominent charge division channels of CO{sup 2+} through CO{sup 7+} were determined from time-of-flight singles and coincidence data. An experiment designed to investigate the orientation dependence of dissociative multielectron ionization of molecules by heavy ion impact was completed. Measurements of the cross sections for K-shell ionization of intermediate-Z elements by 30-MeV/amu H, N, Ne, and Ar ions were completed. The cross sections were determined for solid targets of Z = 13, 22, 26, 29, 32, 40, 42, 46, and 50 by recording the spectra of K x rays with a Si(Li) spectrometer.

Book excerpt: This report presents the progress made in our continuing study of strongly correlated atomic systems within the last year. We have examined the shape of three-body systems in hyperspherical coordinates by studying the evolution of the density functions with the mass ratio of the particles in the system. We have calculated the ejected electron spectra from the autoionizing states formed in double capture processes in collisions of multiply charged ions with atoms. We have investigated the systematics and the propensity rules of radiative and Auger decay rates of high-lying doubly excited states. We have also studied ion-atom collisions for processes which pose great challenges to detailed theories, by looking into processes where the cross sections are small such as the excitation process in He{sup ++} + H collisions, or by looking into fine details such as the orientation parameters in excitation and charge transfer processes.

Book excerpt: Results of experiments completed with Yale equipment coupled to the Oak Ridge Test Bench and Tandem Accelerator facilities are presented. Electron transfer cross sections have been measured at keV collision energies for B, C, N and O ions colliding with H, H2, Ar and He gas targets. The ion charge states studied range from +2 through +5. Also reported are cross sections for Si and Fe ions on H, H2 and Ar at energies between 1.5 and 14 MeV, with charge states varying between +5 and +13. Also measured were the cross sections for H collisions with H, H2 and Ar for energies between 0.8 and 2.5 MeV. At keV energies the cross sections for highly charged B, C, N and O ions are found to be 1 x 10−14 cm2. The cross sections for 4 MeV Fe ions scale roughly with the square of the ion charge, and have values as high as 0.5 x 10−14 cm2 for Fe/sup 10 +/ + H collisions. A strong energy dependence is found for Fe ion collisions between 4 and 14 MeV. Previous results for MeV H+ + Ar collisions are nicely reproduced, while our first results for the fundamental MeV H+ - H collision problem are cross sections higher than many theoretical predictions.
