Book excerpt: Collisions of short, intense laser pulses with electron beams have recently been proposed for various purposes, such as high-quality, Compton-Backscattered X-ray sources (CBX), or coherent pair production positron sources for future ee− Linear Colliders. For such intense laser fields, few-photon perturbative treatments do not suffice, and nonperturbative effects in the fields must be modeled. These effects have, until recently, only been modeled within the ''local plane wave'', or Volkov, approximation, in which ponderomotive (i.e. laser intensity gradient) effects are ignored. A systematic quantum treatment of the ''post-Volkov'' effects occurring in such collisions has recently been initiated by Ben-Menahem. In the present paper, we use the results of to render a simplified treatment of the leading ponderomotive corrections to electron trajectories during the electron-laser collision, and estimate the ramifications for CBX sources which utilize such collisions. We also apply to the CBX case some recently derived estimates of three non-ponderomotive effects: two body collisions in the laser-induced shower; EM self-forces of this shower; and back-reaction of linac-laser collisions upon the laser fields. All three effects are shown to be negligible for the numerical examples considered here.

Book excerpt: An experiment currently underway at BYU is designed to test whether the size of a free electron wave packet affects the character of scattered radiation. Using a semi-classical argument wherein the wave packet is treated as a diffuse charge distribution, one would expect strong suppression of radiation in the direction perpendicular to the propagating field as the wave packet grows in size to be comparable to the wavelength of the driving field. If one disallows the interaction of the wave packet with itself, as is the case when calculating the rate of emission using QED, then regardless of size, the electron wave packet radiates with the strength of a point-like emitter. In support of this experiment, we explore a variety of physical parameters that impact the rate of scattered photons. We employ a classical model to characterize the exposure of electrons to high-intensity laser light in a situation where the electrons are driven by strong ponderomotive gradients. Free electrons are modeled as being donated by low-density helium, which undergoes strong-field ionization early on in the pulse or during a pre-pulse. When exposed to relativistic intensities (i.e. intensities sufficient to cause a Lorentz drift at a significant fraction of c), free electrons experience a Lorentz drift that causes redshifting of the scattered 800 nm laser light. This redshift can be used as a key signature to discern light scattered from the more intense regions of the focus. We characterize the focal volume of initial positions leading to significant redshifting, given a peak intensity of 2×10 18 W/cm 2 , which is sufficient to cause a redshift in scattered light of approximately 100 nm. Under this scenario, the beam waist needs to be larger than several wavelengths for a pulse duration of 35 fs in order to ensure free electrons remain in the focus sufficiently long to experience intensities near the peak pulse intensity despite strong ponderomotive gradients. We compute the rate of redshifted scattered photons from an ensemble of electrons distributed throughout the focus and relate the result to the scattered-photon rate of a single electron. We also estimate to what extent the ionization process may produce unwanted light in the redshifted spectral region that may confound the measurement of light scattered from electrons experiencing intensities greater than 1.5×10 18 W/cm 2 .

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Scientific advances and several technical breakthroughs have led to a remarkable increase in available laser intensities over the past decades. In available ultra-intense laser fields, photon fluxes may become so high that free charge carriers interact coherently with several of the field's photons. In this thesis such nonlinear interactions are investigated for the prime example of radiation emission by electrons scattered from intense laser pulses of arbitrary temporal structure. To this end, nonlinear quantum field theory is employed taking the interaction with the laser into account exactly. After an in-depth introduction to classical particle dynamics as well as quantum field theory in nonlinearly intense laser fields the emission of one and two photons is explicitly analyzed. The results are then translated to viable technical applications, such as a scheme for the determination of the carrier-envelope phase of ultra-intense laser pulses and a proposal for detecting the strongly suppressed two-photon signal.

Book excerpt: Subjecting atoms or molecules to intense laser pulses gives rise to a variety of highly nonlinear phenomena, such as for instance the ionization of electrons and the radiation of high-frequency photons. The distributions of the velocity of the ionized electrons of the frequency of the radiated photons measured at the detector encode relevant informations on the target atoms and molecules at the natural time scale of the electrons, the attosecond-that is, million, million, millionths of a second. Understanding the dynamics of the ionized electrons and identifying the mechanisms of high-frequency radiation are essential steps toward interpreting and decoding the informations encrypted in the experimental measurements. In this thesis, atoms subjected to intense and elliptically polarized laser fields in the infrared regime are theoretically studied. Despite their fundamental quantal nature in atoms, electrons display some classical behaviors when subjected to intense laser pulses. We exploit these classical features to understand and picture, with the help of trajectories, the physical mechanisms at play in order to interpret experimental measurements. After ionizing, the motion of the electrons is analyzed using techniques from nonlinear dynamics. This thesis work demonstrates the complementarity of quantum mechanics and nonlinear dynamics for understanding and illustrating the mechanisms involved when atoms are subjected to intense and elliptically polarized laser pulses.

Book excerpt: The recent developement of high power lasers, delivering femtosecond pulses of 20 2 intensities up to 10 W/cm , has led to the discovery of new phenomena in laser interactions with matter. At these enormous laser intensities, atoms, and molecules are exposed to extreme conditions and new phenomena occur, such as the very rapid multi photon ionization of atomic systems, the emission by these systems of very high order harmonics of the exciting laser light, the Coulomb explosion of molecules, and the acceleration of electrons close to the velocity of light. These phenomena generate new behaviour of bulk matter in intense laser fields, with great potential for wide ranging applications which include the study of ultra-fast processes, the development of high-frequency lasers, and the investigation of the properties of plasmas and condensed matter under extreme conditions of temperature and pressure. In particular, the concept of the "fast ignitor" approach to inertial confinement fusion (ICF) has been proposed, which is based on the separation of the compression and the ignition phases in laser-driven ICF. The aim of this course on "Atom, Solids and Plasmas in Super-Intense Laser fields" was to bring together senior researchers and students in atomic and molecular physics, laser physics, condensed matter and plasma physics, in order to review recent developments in high-intensity laser-matter interactions. The course was held at the Ettore Majorana International Centre for Scientific Culture in Erice from July 8 to July 14,2000.

Book excerpt: We discuss two recent photoionization experiments with atoms in intense laser fields: First we study the dependence of photoelectron spectra on the intensity of the laser pulse. In a second experiment a photoelectron spectrum for elliptical polarization is discussed. With a quantum mechanical model the contribution of specific electron trajectories to the photoelectron spectra can be analyzed. In the presented cases, trajectories with long travel times are of significant importance. Despite of the distinctive quantum nature of the effects, some key features can be explained by classical electron trajectories.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Atoms in strong radiation fields are interesting objects for study, and the research field that concerns itself with this study is a comparatively young one. For a long period after the ~scovery of the photoelectric effect. it was not possible to generate electro magnetic fields that did more than perturb the atom only slightly, and (first-or~er) perturbation theory could perfectly explain what was going on at those low intensities. The development of the pulsed laser bas changed this state of affairs in a rather dramatic way, and fields can be applied that really have a large, or even dominant influence on atomic structure. In the latter case, w~ speak of super-intense fields. Since the interaction between atoms and electromagnetic waves is characterized by many parameters other than the light intensity, such as frequency, iQnization potential, orbit time, etc., it is actually quite difficult to define what is exactly meant by the term 'super-intense'. Obviously the term does not have an absolute meaning, and intensity should always be viewed in relation to other properties of the system. An atom in a radiation field can thus best be described in terms of various ratios of the quantities involved. The nature of the system sometimes drastically changes if the value of one of these parameters exceeds a certain critical value, and the new regime could be called super-intense with respect to that parameter.
