Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electron-Photon Shower Distribution Function: Tables for Lead, Copper and Air Absorbers presents numerical results of the electron-photon shower distribution function for lead, copper, and air absorbers. Electron or photon interactions, including Compton scattering, elastic Coulomb scattering, and the photo-electric effect, are taken into account in the calculations. This book consists of four chapters and begins with a review of both theoretical and experimental work aimed at deducing the characteristics of the cascade produced from the propagation of high energy electrons and photons through matter. The next two chapters discuss in some detail the method of simulating the electron-photon cascade on a digital computer and present the cross-sections for all processes that are simulated in the program written for the English-Electric-Leo KDF9. The manner in which each process is subjected to computer simulations is described. The results come from two computer programs: the first was written for SILLIAC and the second for KDF9. This monograph will be a valuable resource for computer scientists, mathematicians, and physicists.

Book excerpt: NSA is a comprehensive collection of international nuclear science and technology literature for the period 1948 through 1976, pre-dating the prestigious INIS database, which began in 1970. NSA existed as a printed product (Volumes 1-33) initially, created by DOE's predecessor, the U.S. Atomic Energy Commission (AEC). NSA includes citations to scientific and technical reports from the AEC, the U.S. Energy Research and Development Administration and its contractors, plus other agencies and international organizations, universities, and industrial and research organizations. References to books, conference proceedings, papers, patents, dissertations, engineering drawings, and journal articles from worldwide sources are also included. Abstracts and full text are provided if available.

This book was released on 2012-01-04 with total page 508 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since the discovery of X-rays and radioactivity, ionizing radiations have been widely applied in medicine both for diagnostic and therapeutic purposes. The risks associated with radiation exposure and handling led to the parallel development of the field of radiation protection. Pioneering experiments done by Sanche and co-workers in 2000 showed that low-energy secondary electrons, which are abundantly generated along radiation tracks, are primarily responsible for radiation damage through successive interactions with the molecular constituents of the medium. Apart from ionizing processes, which are usually related to radiation damage, below the ionization level low-energy electrons can induce molecular fragmentation via dissociative processes such as internal excitation and electron attachment. This prompted collaborative projects between different research groups from European countries together with other specialists from Canada, the USA and Australia. This book summarizes the advances achieved by these research groups after more than ten years of studies on radiation damage in biomolecular systems. An extensive Part I deals with recent experimental and theoretical findings on radiation induced damage at the molecular level. It includes many contributions on electron and positron collisions with biologically relevant molecules. X-ray and ion interactions are also covered. Part II addresses different approaches to radiation damage modelling. In Part III biomedical aspects of radiation effects are treated on different scales. After the physics-oriented focus of the previous parts, there is a gradual transition to biology and medicine with the increasing size of the object studied. Finally, Part IV is dedicated to current trends and novel techniques in radiation reserach and the applications hence arising. It includes new developments in radiotherapy and related cancer therapies, as well as technical optimizations of accelerators and totally new equipment designs, giving a glimpse of the near future of radiation-based medical treatments.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Average electron and photon energies are found at various distances from the cores of extensive air showers by comparing the multiplicities produced under different thicknesses of lead and of water absorbers as measured through the use of two large scintillators. For distances from 2.3.10/2 to 1.4.10/1 shower units from the cores of showers of 100,000 to 10 to 7th power particles the total energy carried by electrons and photons per electron is found to be 61(r/r sub 2/0.74 MeV per electron. The ratio of the average photon energy to the average electron energy is found to vary from 1.5 to 3.3 at different distances. Transition curves obtained with different thicknesses of water as absorber are used to show that for showers of 460,000 particles a total of 1.5 times 10 to the 12th power eV is expended in the production of pions per nuclear interaction to give an inelasticity of 0.33. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the present experiment, the three-dimensional distribution of energy deposition was measured for 1-GeV electron-induced showers in water and aluminum. For the water target, two different detectors were employed: CsI(T1) and anthracene. The measured longitudinal distribution of energy in water was found to be essentially independent of the detector employed in the measurement, while the radial distribution of energy deposition shows a strong detector dependence. Data were measured for the aluminum target with a CaF2(Eu) detector. All of these data support the description that the primary energy-deposition mechanism at the initiation of the shower is ionization of the target material and that the principle energy-transport mechanism after shower maximum is the propagation of minimum attenuation gamma-rays. The radial distributions of energy deposition show that the apparent dependence on the atomic number of the target observed in an earlier experiment was in part a detector-dependent result. The radial distributions, nevertheless, show significant differences from the prediction based on the Monte Carlo calculations of Nagel. (Author).
