We report comprehensive structural and magnetic studies on thin (3 layer) assemblies of polyethylenimine (PEI) and 4 nm Fe5Pt42 nanoparticles using X-ray diffraction, small angle neutron scattering and magnetometry. We show that prior to annealing FePt nanoparticles in the PEI-FePt assembly consist of a metallic, magnetic core surrounded by a weakly magnetic or non-magnetic shell. High temperature annealing creates the desired L10 chemical ordering and results in high coercivity FePt nanoparticles. However, we find that the high temperatures necessary to establish full chemical ordering leads to particle sintering and agglomeration. Understanding the magnetic and physical properties of these assemblies allows future research directions to be clarified for nanoparticle arrays as data storage media.

The field of nanoparticles is one of the most investigated within nanomaterials, thanks to the existing, relatively simple, means of manufacturing. In this thesis, high-power pulsed hollow cathode sputtering is used to nucleate and grow magnetic nanoparticles in a plasma. This sputtering technique provides a high degree of ionization of the sputtered material, which has previously been shown to aid in the growth of the nanoparticles. The magnetic properties of the particles are utilized and makes it possible for the grown particles to act as building blocks for self-assembly into more sophisticated nano structures, particularly when an external magnetic field is applied. These structures created are termed “nanowires” or “nanotrusses”, depending on the level of branching and inter-linking that occurs. Several different elements have been investigated in this thesis. In a novel approach, it is shown how nanoparticles with more advanced structures, and containing material from two hollow cathodes, can be fabricated using high-power pulses. The dual-element particles are achieved by using two distinct and individual elemental cathodes, and a pulse process that allows tuning of individual pulses separately to them. Nanoparticles grown and investigated are Fe, Ni, Pt, Fe-Ni and Ni-Pt. Alternatively, the addition of oxygen to the process allows the formation of oxide or hybrid metal oxide – metal particles. For all nanoparticles containing several elements, it is demonstrated that the stoichiometry can be easily varied, either by the amount of reactive gas let into the process or by tuning the amount of sputtered material through adjusting the electric power supplied to the different cathodes. One aim of the presented work is to find a suitable material for the use as a catalyst in the production of H2 gas through the process of water splitting. H2 is a good candidate to replace fossil fuels as an energy carrier. However, rare elements (such as Ir or Pt) needs to be used as the catalyst, otherwise a high overpotential is required for the splitting to occur, leading to a low efficiency. This work demonstrates a possible route to avoid this, by using nanomaterials to increase the surface-to-volume ratio, as well as optimizing the elemental ratio between different materials to lower the amount of noble elements required.

Polymer-mediated layer-by-layer growth leads to precise control of the particle self-assembly. We have studied self-assembled multilayers of magnetic FePt nanoparticles. The L10 phase of FePt has a very high magnetic anisotropy which allows the magnetization of particles of about 4 nm diameter to be thermally stable at room temperature. Magnetic measurements using vibrating sample magnetometer were combined with X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Near Edge X-ray Absorption Fine Structure (NEXAFS) Spectroscopy to study the annealed FePt nanoparticle assemblies and to optimize annealing conditions. Paul Alivisatos, Chair This dissertation demonstrates the application of liquid phase transmission electron microscopy for quantifying interactions between colloidal nanoparticles and visualizing their self-assembled structures in their native solution state. Over a decade ago, the first liquid cells that could successfully enclose a thin layer of liquid while maintaining compatibility with the high vacuum conditions inside an electron microscope were developed. Subsequent commercialization of this technology by several companies greatly increased its accessibility and the research field has expanded rapidly as a result. The ability to directly visualize real-time nanoscale dynamics in solution has enabled researchers in physics, chemistry, biology, and materials science to investigate previously unexplored scientific phenomena. Thus far, the vast majority of research in this field has made use of the highly perturbative effect of the electron beam to initiate the dynamic process under study. Although this approach has yielded fruitful knowledge and insights, it has not been straightforward to extrapolate the conclusions formed from these studies to experiments conducted outside of the electron microscope. The effects of electron beam irradiation are still poorly understood, and ways to counteract them are limited. A more widespread application of liquid phase transmission electron microscopy would only be realized if the influence of the electron beam were well-known and could be tuned in a predictable manner. By understanding and controlling the effects of the electron beam on the encapsulated specimen during the imaging process, it will be possible to extract information relating to the behavior of colloidal nanoparticles in solution that can be generalizable to experiments carried out in the wet lab. Chapter 1 introduces the basic concepts of nanoparticle self-assembly, interparticle interactions at the nanoscale, DNA-mediated nanoparticle assembly, liquid phase transmission electron microscopy, and radiation-induced effects that accompany electron microscopy imaging in liquid. Chapter 2 illustrates how the individual trajectories of nanoparticles moving in solution, obtained using liquid phase transmission electron microscopy, can be utilized for quantitative analysis of their interparticle interactions. Chapter 3 describes how the damaging effects of electron beam irradiation on DNA-assembled nanoparticles can be mitigated with the use of graphene and its derivatives as biocompatible radical scavengers. Chapter 4 summarizes the seminal findings that are reported in this dissertation and provides a brief outlook for the future.

(2) The exploration of minimum achievable feature sizes using ultra-high resolution EBL and a lift-off process with polymethyl-methacrylate resists. 10 nm features, which are among the smallest ever achieved using EBL, have been obtained using a double shadow evaporation technique, a ultra-high resolution EBL technique, and a technique utilizing EBL, reactive ion etching, and subsequent wet etching. (3) The application of ultra-high resolution EBL technology to the fabrication of ultra-fast metal-semiconductor-metal (MSM) photodetectors. The fastest response time reported to date has been achieved in this project. (4) The fabrication and characterization of modulation doped field effect transistors. Quantum effects have been observed in a point contact device. (5) The fabrication of sub-50 nm Si structures using EBL, reactive ion etching (RIE) and subsequent wet etching for the study of photoluminescence (PL) from Si. PL has been observed from an array of 20 nm diameter pillars. And finally, (6) the application of high resolution EBL to the study of magnetic materials. Single domain magnetic particles and novel MFM tips have been fabricated.
