Book excerpt: ,,1m Kleinsten die wirkliche Wahrheit gibt graBen Gedanken erst Klarheit" KARL THOMAS Each year sees the publication of hundreds of reports of experimental work on the lymphatic tissue, yet morphological studies of the cells involved can be counted on the fingers of one hand. Furthermore, anyone who tries to identify these cells by morphological criteria is accused of sophistry and hair splitting, whereas it is accounted scientifically correct and unbiased to speak of "lymphoid cells", "blast cells" etc. Not so many years ago things were different: there were too many names and too many classifi cations and everyone backed his particular fancy. People thought of cells in terms of rigid classes, nothing then being known about the transformability of mononuclear blood cells. Today we must look for the middle way: cells should be named and defined according to morpho logical criteria but their transformation potential should be borne in mind. Once the cells are analysed and subdivided, it will be simple enough to set up proper classifications afterwards. This book arose out of the conviction that there should be more criteria and more information available on the morphology of human lymphoreticular cells; previously such information had been restricted by the difficulty of the special hematological and cytochemical staining methods.

This includes palpable lesions and lesions sampled using various radiological methods, and correlations with ancillary examinations detailed on an entity-by-entity basis. As well as being a complete atlas of the facts and findings important to FNAC, this atlas is a guide to diagnostic methods that optimize health care. The interaction of the cytologist or cytopathologist with other specialists (radiologists, oncologists and surgeons) involved in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with suspicious mass lesions is emphasized and illustrated throughout. With contributions from experts in the field internationally and abundant colour images Atlas of Fine Needle Aspiration Cytology provides a comprehensive and up-to-date guide to FNAC for pathologists, cytopathologists, radiologists, oncologists, surgeons and others involved in the diagnosis and treatment of patients with suspicious mass lesions.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This problem-based guide illustrates key reasoning processes that physicians use to resolve individual clinical problems through the use of electron microscopy. Its format will facilitate learning the case approach for diagnostic ultrastructural pathology using clinical-ultrastructural-pathogenic correlation. A total of 51 cases and a procedural guide for the ultrastructural pathology laboratory are included. The cases were selected according to one of the following four principles: 1) classic cases that were diagnosed readily by light microscopy to facilitate the electron microscopic diagnosis of less "classic" cases; 2) diagnostic cases, those cases for which ultrastructural analysis was essential for the diagnosis; 3) supportive cases, which are those cases where either the light or the electron microscopic diagnosis is supportive and confirmatory to the other; and 4) new facts cases, which are those that establish new knowledge regarding the pathogenesis of disease using electron microscopy as the investigative modality. The 51 cases are grouped anatomically in eight major categories. Separate indices for presenting symptoms, differential diagnostic groups, ultrastructural pathology criteria, and final diagnostic categories are provided, as well. This guide will be useful to physicians and students of medicine, structure, and disease. It also makes an ideal operational guide and text for support staff training.

Book excerpt: Based on the experience of the distinguished Amsterdam Lymphoma Panel, this book supplies the theoretical background for understanding and classifying lymphomas in a uniform way. Each chapter presents data on clinical findings, cytology, histology, immunocytochemistry, and, where pertinent, electron microscopy and molecular biology. The first chapter is devoted entirely to Hodgkin's disease, while subsequent chapters describe the Non-Hodgkin's lymphomas and form the bulk of the book. The authors cover topics such as lymphomagenesis, compartmentalization of T and B lymphocytes in lymph nodes, differential diagnosis and growth pattern of NHLs. A chapter deals exclusively with extranodal lymphomas, and the latest CD list of monoclonal antibodies is provided.

Book excerpt: Ultrastructural Pathology of the Cell and Matrix: Third Edition Volume 2 presents a comprehensive examination of the intracellular lesion. It discusses the analysis of pathological tissues using electron microscope. It addresses the experimental procedures made on the cellular level. Some of the topics covered in the book are the structure, distribution, and variations of rod-shaped microtubulated bodies; morphology of intracytoplasmic filaments; melanosome-producing and melanosome-containing cells in tumours; myofilaments in striated muscle; and pathological variations in size, shape, and numbers of microbodies. The intracytoplasmic and intranuclear annulate lamellae are fully covered. An in-depth account of the classification, history, and nomenclature of lysosomes are provided. The morphology and normal variations of melanosomes and anchoring fibrils are completely presented. A chapter is devoted to the endocytotic structures and cell processes. Another section focuses on the classification and nomenclature of fibrous components. The book can provide useful information to cytologists, pathologists, students, and researchers.

Book excerpt: This text atlas, now in its second edition, presents in simplest form the basic diagnostic criteria used by the electron microscopist in studying neoplasms and other diseases encountered in the routine practice of pathology. Every field of electron microscopy is covered and low magnification plates are juxtaposed with higher magnifications to illustrate diagnostic features. The largest section of the book is devoted to neoplasms as this is the area in which most diagnostic problems occur. Renal glomerular disease is another important category in which ultrastructural study may be critical in diagnosis; infectious diseases, especially those of viral, protozoan, and unusual bacterial etiologies, are a third area in which electron microscopy may be used to establish or susbstantiate a diagnosis. All of these areas are comprehensively covered with concise, readable text and more than 800 first-quality images. This book is the preeminent reference for pathologists needing current information on the role of ultrastructure in diagnostic pathology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Diagnostic Electron Microscopy of Tumors, Second Edition is a guide on how to employ electron microscopy techniques in making evaluation on tumor biopsies. This edition aims to serve as a source of information, references, and electron micrographs for the practicing electron microscopists. This book is divided into five parts; each of which tackles a different topic. Part 1 discusses the collection of specimen, and Part 2 talks about the assessment of tumors' behavior and growth. Ultrastructural analysis of diagnostic problems is covered in Part 3; the significance of some ultrastructural features in tumors is explained in Parts 4 and 5. This text is recommended for those who wish to examine tumor biopsies with an electron microscope as well as those who want to become more conversant with such matters, so that they can understand and evaluate electron micrographs and reports. This book will be valuable to physicians, surgeons, histopathologists, and pathology residents.
