Book Synopsis On the Capture of Electrons by Fast Ions by : Julian K. Knipp
Download or read book On the Capture of Electrons by Fast Ions written by Julian K. Knipp and published by . This book was released on 1949 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Oppenheimer Brinkman Kramers theory of the capture of electrons by alpha particles in their passage through matter is formulated in terms of a momentum representation of the electrons. For a heavy ion carrying a core of electrons. capture is largely into excited states. Total cross sections for such ions are estimated assuming hydrogen like representations for the electron in the captured states and treating the atom from which capture takes place by the Thomas Fermi model.

Download or read book Electron Capture by Trapped Ne{sup 10+} at Very Low Energies written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page 16 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: An electrostatic ion trap has been used to trap Ne{sup q+} (1d"d"0) ions created by a fast xenon beam passing through neon gas. Exponential decay in time of the Ne{sup 10+} fraction due to electron capture from neon gas was observed and the decay rates measured. For mean kinetic energies between 7-45 eV, the total electron capture cross section ([sigma]{sub e.c}) is found to be velocity independent. For this energy range we obtain [sigma]{sub e.c}(Ne{sup 10+}) = 2.4 x 10−15 cm2, with an estimated uncertainty of 30 percent.

Book Synopsis Multiple Electron Capture in Close Ion-atom Collisions by :
Download or read book Multiple Electron Capture in Close Ion-atom Collisions written by and published by . This book was released on 1989 with total page 7 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Collisions in which a fast highly charged ion passes within the orbit of K electron of a target gas atom are selected by emission of a K x-ray from the projectile or target. Measurement of the projectile charge state after the collision, in coincidence with the K x-ray, allows measurement of the charge-transfer probability during these close collisions. When the projectile velocity is approximately the same as that of target electrons, a large number of electrons can be transferred to the projectile in a single collision. The electron-capture probability is found to be a linear function of the number of vacancies in the projectile L shell for 47-MeV calcium ions in an Ar target. 18 refs., 9 figs.

Book Synopsis Anomalous Electron Heating and Energy Balance in an Ion Beam Generated Plasma by :
Download or read book Anomalous Electron Heating and Energy Balance in an Ion Beam Generated Plasma written by and published by . This book was released on 1987 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The plasma described in this report is generated by a 15 to 34 kV ion beam, consisting primarily of protons, passing through an H2 gas cell neutralizer. Plasma ions (or ion-electron pairs) are produced by electron capture from (or ionization of) gas molecules by beam ions and atoms. An explanation is provided for the observed anomalous behavior of the electron temperature (T/sub e/): a step-lite, nearly two-fold jump in T/sub e/ as the beam current approaches that which minimizes beam angular divergence; insensitivity of T/sub e/ to gas pressure; and the linear relation of T/sub e/ to beam energy.

Book Synopsis Electron Capture and Loss to Continuum States in Gases and Solids by :
Download or read book Electron Capture and Loss to Continuum States in Gases and Solids written by and published by . This book was released on 1980 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A key feature of the experimental procedure is the easy interchange of short gaseous and thin solid targets at the same physical position, with all apparatus aperture sizes, dimensions, positions, and other experimental details unaltered. It has therefore been possible to cancel most systematic apparatus effects in comparing gaseous and solid target results. By using single ion-atom collision techniques, by using bare and few-electron ions of appreciably higher charge than heretofore, by extending the velocity range of measurement appreciably above that of earlier experiments, and by studying charge-state variation over an appreciably wider range than used previously, it has been possible to test experimentally features of continuum electron-capture and -loss theories which have been inaccessible in previous experiments. These somewhat orthogonal tests complement rather than duplicate earlier experimental tests, but, like them, raise new questions about still other conspicuous disagreements.
