Book excerpt: Some recent theoretical results on coherent electromagnetic processes in ultrarelativistic heavy ion reactions are surveyed. In ultrarelativistic heavy ion collisions, Coulomb induced cross sections are huge, much larger than geometric. For the RHIC case of 100 GeV x 100 GeV colliding gold ions the predicted cross section for bound-electron positron pairs is about 110 barns. The corresponding cross section for continuum electron-positron pairs has recently been recalculated to be 34,000 barns, consistent with the result of the classic formula of Landau and Lifshitz. The cross section for Coulomb dissociation of the nucleus is about 95 barns, and the cross section for ionization of a single electron on one of the ions is about 100,000 barns.

Such studies enhance our understanding of the role of the vacuum in field theory, and provide essential input for several experimental programs. A variety of models for the nuclear and nucleon form factors have been considered, revealing some degree of sensitivity to assumptions about sub-nuclear structure. We predict that the cross sections, even at high invariant masses and transverse momenta, are large on hadronic scales, and should act as useful probes of nuclear and nucleon form factors. 21 refs., 5 figs.

Book excerpt: The authors solve, in an ultrarelativistic limit, the time-dependent Dirac equation describing electron-positron pair production in peripheral relativistic heavy ion collisions using light front variables and a light-fronts representation, obtaining nonperturbative results for the free pair-creation amplitudes in the collider frame. Their result reproduces the result of second-order perturbation theory in the small charge limit while nonperturbative effects arise for realistic charges of the ions.

Book excerpt: In this talk, the authors focus on electromagnetic dilepton production from the QED-vacuum in relativistic heavy-ion collisions. Heavy ions in relativistic motion generate strong time-dependent EM fields with large Fourier components which give rise to sizable pair production. There are several motivations for this study: Lepton pair production by hadronic (Drell-Yan) processes has been widely discussed as a possible signature of the quark-gluon plasma formation. The dominant background will come from electromagnetic sources and could even mask the signals from the plasma phase. Electromagnetically produced lepton pairs also impose severe constraints on the design of relativistic heavy-ion colliders such as RHIC and LHC. In addition to the free pair production discussed above, pair-production with capture of the negatively charged lepton into a bound state is also possible. This change of the charge state of the ions is the leading mechanism for beam loss of relativistic colliders. Accurate predictions of the cross section for this process are important because the cross section increases with energy.

The purpose of the meeting was to celebrate two developments at Brookhaven that, in both cases, are the outcome of more than a decade of preparation: the new muon g-2 measurement and the flood of data that started pouring out of RHIC. Bringing together people from these very different fields was an interesting challenge. But, at the time, when a small community of heavy ion physicists was beginning to define a program of electromagnetic interactions at RHIC and LHC, it seemed logical. The result is the white paper ?Hot Topics in Ultra-peripheral Collisions?.On Fermi's centennial, his original paper, developing for the first time the equivalent photon approximation, seemed to merit renewed attention. The paper has been translated into English from the Italian and included in the proceedings.

Book excerpt: If a heavy particle ion (atom, molecule, muon) collides with another in the gas phase at speeds approaching the speed of light, the time-dependent Dirac equation equation must be used for its description, including quantum electro-dynamic, special relativity and magnetic coupling effects. In this book we study one electron in the variety of rearrangement collisions: radiative and non-radiative capture, ionization, capture by pair (one electron, one positron) production and antihydrogen production. Our relativistic continuum distorted-wave theory accounts extremely well for the simultaneous behaviour of the electron with respect to the nuclear charges of the projectile and the target. This is the first book developed in this subject. Containing many diagrams and tables, and fully referenced, it goes beyond chapters in previous books. The relativistic continuum distorted-wave theory developed by the authors group, is shown to be fully Hermitean. Detailed mathematics are provided in nine appendices.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Consider the relativistic scattering problem of an electron in the external field of two point-like charges (ions), moving on parallel, straight-line trajectories in opposite directions at speeds which approach the speed of light, and at an impact parameter 2b. An external-field approach to the influence of the ions on the electron is appropriate for peripheral impact parameters, heavy-ions, and high energies, where, to a very good approximation, the ions travel on parallel, straight-line trajectories, and ion recoil is negligible. We review here our recent work on this problem [1, 2, 3]. In section 2, following Ref. [2], we show that the two center time dependent Dirac equation for the electron reduces in the high energy limit to Eq. (26) with the interactions of Eq. (29). In section 3, following Ref. [1], we solve this equation off the light fronts i.e. for an electron that both initially and asymptotically is not co-moving with an ion. The main result of our work is the transition amplitude given by Eqs. (90) and (67). In section 4, we discuss the application of this solution to electromagnetic pair production in heavy ion collisions, which we have used, for example, in Ref. [3], to explain recent experimental results. We note that one should distinguish between electron-positron pairs produced so that they are co-moving with the ions and those that are not. The two cases differ experimentally. They also differ theoretically, because they are described by different asymptotic boundary conditions. We have solved the problem only for electron-positron pairs that are not co-moving with the ions. Our solution to the two center Dirac equation in the high energy limit was confirmed by different methods, including a Green function approach [4], and resummation of the perturbation series [5]. The application to pair production on the other hand, has raised some controversy, which is also discussed in section 4. Section 5 concludes.

Book excerpt: The NATO Advanced Study Institute on Quantum Electrodynamics of Strong Fields was held at Lahnstein on the Rhine from 15-26 June, 1981. The school was devoted to the advances, theoretical and exper imental, in the physics of strong fields made during the past decade. The topic of the first week was almost exclusively quantum electrodynamics, with discussions of symmetry breaking in the ground state, of the physics of heavy ion collisions and of precision tests of perturbative quantum electrodynamics. This was followed in the second week by the presentation of a broad range of other areas where strong fields occur, reaching from nuclear physics over quantum chromodynamics to gravitation theory and astrophysics. We were fortunate to be able to call on a body of lecturers who not only have made considerable personal contributions to these advances but who are also noted for their lecturing skills. Their dedication for their subject was readily transmitted to the stu dents resulting in a very successful school. This enthusiasm is also reflected in their contributions to these Proceedings which, as I believe, will in time become a standard source of reference for future work on the physics of strong fields and will help to spread the benefits of the school to a larger audience than those who were able to attend. I regret that the Soviet colleagues Ya. B. Zeldovich and V. S. Popov were unable to participate.
