Book excerpt: Comprehensive Resource for Understanding Electromagnetic Shielding Concepts and Recent Developments in the Field This book describes the fundamental, theoretical, and practical aspects to approach electromagnetic shielding with a problem-solving mind, either at a design stage or in the context of an issue-fixing analysis of an existing configuration. It examines the main shielding mechanisms and how to analyze any shielding configuration, taking into account all the involved aspects. A detailed discussion on the possible choices of parameters suitable to ascertain the performance of a given shielding structure is also presented by considering either a continuous wave EM field source or a transient one. To aid in reader comprehension, both a theoretical and a practical engineering point of view are presented with several examples and applications included at the end of main chapters. Sample topics discussed in the book include: Concepts in transient shielding including performance parameters and canonical configurations Time domain performance of shielding structures, thin shields, and overall performance of shielding enclosures (cavities) How to install adequate barriers around the most sensitive components/systems to reduce or eliminate interference Details on solving core fundamental issues for electronic and telecommunications systems via electromagnetic shielding For industrial researchers, telecommunications/electrical engineers, and academics studying the design of EM shielding structures, this book serves as an important resource for understanding both the logistics and practical applications of electromagnetic shielding. It also includes all recent developments in the field to help professionals stay ahead of the curve in their respective disciplines.

This book was released on 2005 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This procedure covers the recommended testing techniques for thedetermination of radiated immunity of an automotive electronicdevice. This technique uses a Tri-Plate Line (TPL) operating over afrequency range from 10 KHz to 1000 MHz. This technique is limitedto components which have a maximum height of equal to or less than1/3 the height between the driven element and the outer, groundplates.A TPL, a variation of a TEM cell design, is constructed withoutsides to the cell. The primary advantage to the use of the TPL asopposed to a TEM cell is that its construction permits largedevices to be placed within the cell with their associated cablesattached without special feed through ports or adapters as requiredfor a TEM cell. The lack of sides which would be found in a TEMcell permits easy routing of the cables to and from the EquipmentUnder Test (DUT).The TPL does not have a serious problem with fields reflectedfrom the side walls as does with the TEM cell. This permits its useto frequencies above that of a TEM cell of the same physical size.Note that although the construction of the TPL limits generation ofuniform electric and magnetic fields to frequencies below 500 MHz,experience has shown that the TPL may be used at frequencies up to1 GHz and still provide reasonable and repeatable test results. This may only occur if the test setup requirements (i.e., DUT plus1 meter of cable) and characterization procedures, delineated inthis SAE Standard permits its use to frequencies above that of aTEM cell of the same physical size. Test personnel should ensure thatno one is in the test chamber during a test. It is the intent ofthe EMI committee to withdraw this document in five years unlessthere is a demand to retain the documentMay 5, 2005 - I am the author (Keith Frazier) of this specific standard, which was used exclusively by Ford Motor Company. There were no other known users of this standard. In October of 2003, the Ford requirements were significantly changed which included deletion of the Tri Plate Line as a acceptable method. The method/standard was replaced with other SAE/ISO standards. No plans to use the TriPlate line method in the future, Given these facts, I propose deletion of the J1113-25.-

Book excerpt: This SAE Recommended Practice covers the recommended testing techniques for the determination of electric field immunity of an automotive electronic device. This technique uses a strip line{sup}1 from 10 kHz to 200 MHz and is limited to exposing the harnesses (and/or devices) which have a maximum height of equal to or less than 1/3 the strip line height. When J1113-23 was released in 1995, a note was included in the scope regarding the expected life of the document which stated: "This method is being replaced by the Tri-plate Line (SAE J1113-25) which is considered to be a superior method. It will be retained for historical purposes for a period of five years where upon it will be considered to be withdrawn." The committee decided in August 2001 to ballot this document for cancellation.

Book excerpt: This part of SAE J1113 specifies the direct RF power injection test method and procedure to testing electromagnetic immunity of electronic components for passenger cars and commercial vehicles. The electromagnetic disturbances considered in this part of SAE J1113 are limited to continuous, narrowband conducted RF energy. This test method is applicable to all DUT leads except ground. The test provides differential mode excitation to the DUT. Immunity measurements of complete vehicles are generally only possible by the vehicle manufacturer. The reasons, for example, are high costs of a large absorber-lined chamber, preserving the secrecy of prototypes or the large number of different vehicle models. Therefore, for research, development, and quality control, a laboratory measuring method for components shall be applied by the manufacturer. This method is suitable over the frequency range of 250 kHz to 500 MHz.

Book excerpt: Vehicle electrical/electronic systems may be affected when immersed in an electromagnetic field generated by sources such as radio and TV broadcast stations, radar and communication sites, mobile transmitters, cellular phones, etc. Reverberation method is used to evaluate the immunity of electronic devices in the frequency range of 400 MHz - 18GHz. Pulse modulation is used for testing above 800 MHz. This document provides the component design and test engineers with a test procedure and the performance requirements necessary to evaluate the immunity of electronic devices to radiated electromagnetic fields early in the design stage as well as pilot and production stages. Ensuring electromagnetic compatibility early in the development stage will minimize costly changes later in the program and will prevent excessive component level hardening during full-vehicle level testing. The reverberation test method performs a dual function: The primary function of the method is to provide a bench test procedure correlatable to vehicle-level radiated immunity testing in the anechoic chamber and at mobile transmitter sites. The method can be used to evaluate the relative performance of different designs of the same device.J1113/28 is being canceled in favor of ISO 11452-11.

Book excerpt: This procedure covers the recommended testing techniques for the determination of electric field immunity of an automotive electronic device. This technique uses a tri-plate line (TPL) from 10 kHz to 500 MHz and is limited to components which have a maximum height of equal to or less than 1/3 the height between the driven element and the outer, grounded plates. A tri-plate line is a variation of a TEM cell design which is constructed without sides to the cell. The TPL sets up a region of uniform electric and magnetic fields between the center septum and the top and bottom grounded plates. One advantage to the use of the TPL as opposed to a TEM cell is that the construction permits large devices to be placed within the cell with their associated cables attached without special feed through ports or adapters as required for a TEM cell. The lack of sides which would be found in a TEM cell permits easy routing of the cables to and from the equipment under test (EUT). The TPL does not have a serious problem with fields reflected from the side wall as does the TEM cell due to the lack of side walls. This permits its use to frequencies above twice the normal useful frequency for a TEM cell of the same physical size. However, the lack of side walls also means that the TPL must be used within a shielded room to prevent radiation from the TPL from interfering with near-by electronic devices. The possibility of room resonances and reflected waves distorting the measurements must not be ignored. This is discussed in greater detail in the body of this document.
