Book excerpt: The modern microprocessor based electronic equipment most vulnerable to Intentional Destructive Electromagnetic Interferences (IDEI) includes High-Altitude Electromagnetic Pulse (HEMP) in all substation equipment. However, power equipment and especially transformers are also subject to the influence of HEMP. The book discusses problems and solutions for both kinds of substation equipment. Separated into eight chapters, the book covers: Technological progress and its consequences; Intentional Destructive Electromagnetic Interferences (IDEI); Methods and means of Digital Protective Relay (DPR) protection from electromagnetic pulse; Passive methods and means of DPR protection from electromagnetic pulse; Active methods and means of DPR protection from electromagnetic pulse; Tests of DPR resistance to IDEI impacts; Organizational and technical measures to protect DPR from HEMP; and Protection of power equipment and transformers from HEMP. Key features: Practical approach focusing on technical solutions for difficult problems. Full data on electromagnetic threats and methods of their prevention are concentrated. Addresses a gap in knowledge in the power system industry. This book emphasizes practical recommendations on protection of power substations' electric equipment from IDEI that intended for not only staff operating electric equipment, but also for manufacturers of this equipment, specialists of designing companies, managers of electric energy industry as well as for teachers and postgraduate students.

Book excerpt: Environmental Requirements for Electromechanical and Electrical Equipment is the definitive reference containing all of the background guidance, typical ranges, details of recommended test specifications, case studies and regulations covering the environmental requirements on designers and manufacturers of electrical and electromechanical equipment worldwide. The recent introduction of the European EMC directive is just one aspect of the requirements placed upon manufacturers and designers of electrical equipment. There are numerous national and international standards and specifications that describe the application environment in which equipment must function. Factors that must be taken into account include temperature, solar radiation, humidity, pressure, weather and the effects of water and salt, pollutants and contaminants, mechanical stresses and vibration, ergonomic considerations, electrical safety including EMC, reliability and performance. A broad range of standard tests exist which must be passed by equipment if it is to fulfil the requirements placed upon it. Ray Tricker is the author of a number of books describing the regulatory framework within which the electronics and electrical equipment industry must function, including Quality and Standards in Electronics, also published by Newnes. This latest volume will give the designer or manufacturer a first point of reference when negotiating the minefield that is the global market for their products. - Companion to 'Quality and Standards in Electronics' - Covers essential tests and regulations for equipment designers and manufacturers - Likely to be of interest to major companies worldwide

Book excerpt: Technologies such as GPS, vital to the financial markets as well as the military, are known to be vulnerable to the effects of space weather or the EMP resultant from a nuclear weapon exploded at altitude. It is also possible to build non-nuclear devices which can disrupt electronic systems, though so far only over a limited area. A severe space weather event is not necessarily seen as a military problem in the first instance, but it would be likely to meet the definition of an "emergency" under the Civil Contingencies Act 2004 and call for the help of the Armed Forces. The reactive posture described by the Government appears somewhat complacent. The Committee is very concerned that there appears to be no one Government Department identified to take immediate lead responsibility should there be a severe space weather event. The Government must make clear exactly where lead responsibility in relation to EMP disturbances lies both nationally and within the MoD. Defence alone cannot protect against the threat of EMP. It must be a concern of the National Security Council and civil contingency planners, with proper standards of protection developed with the vital service industries most at risk. The effects of a High Altitude Electro-Magnetic Pulse Event as a result of a nuclear weapon exploded at high altitude, would be so serious that only government action could be expected to mitigate it. Security of satellites is a matter of growing concern as our reliance upon such systems and the sheer number of satellites in orbit increase.

Book excerpt: MIL-HDBK-419A 29 DECEMBER 1987 Volume 2 of 2 Applications Unfortunately, few Military Handbooks address the need for defense against electromagnetic pulse (EMP) and cybersecurity. While EMP has been thought of as a remote possibility (who in his right mind is going to launch a nuclear weapon of any kind against the U.S.?) Advances in non-nuclear EMP, miniaturization of electronics and autonomous drones suddenly brings EMP into the role of the possible. No longer would an adversary need to risk retaliation when a drone from an unknown source attacks a vital facility. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: EMI Troubleshooting Cookbook for Product Designers is a one-stop guide that will help engineers and technicians who have products which fail to meet EMI/EMC regulatory standards. It provides "recipes" of simple, easily implemented, and inexpensive troubleshooting tools or aids that can be built by the engineer or the technician. Written in a very simple style requiring only minimal electromagnetic theory and math, the "cookbook" will teach the engineer and technician to develop a "process" for troubleshooting--making it a straight-forward approach to solving what may seem like a rather complicated problem. Real-world stories are used to further illustrate both the concepts put forth in the book and the thinking process required when troubleshooting EMI problems. All materials are organized around these main aspects in a logical way, providing accessible, useful, complete coverage of the main aspects of the mitigation/troubleshooting philosophy. The book's less technical approach and balanced coverage of both basic theory and practical aspects will provide guidelines on how to approach an EMI failure, things to try, choosing the appropriate component, to how to choose the right parts and balance between cost and performance.

This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Life is often considered to be a journey. The lifecycle of waste can similarly be considered to be a journey from the cradle (when an item becomes valueless and, usually, is placed in the dustbin) to the grave (when value is restored by creating usable material or energy; or the waste is transformed into emissions to water or air, or into inert material placed in a landfill). This preface provides a route map for the journey the reader of this book will undertake. Who? Who are the intended readers of this book? Waste managers (whether in public service or private companies) will find a holistic approach for improving the environmental quality and the economic cost of managing waste. The book contains general principles based on cutting edge experience being developed across Europe. Detailed data and a computer model will enable operations managers to develop data-based improvements to their systems. Producers oj waste will be better able to understand how their actions can influence the operation of environmentally improved waste management systems. Designers oj products and packages will be better able to understand how their design criteria can improve the compatibility of their product or package with developing, environmentally improved waste management systems. Waste data specialists (whether in laboratories, consultancies or environ mental managers of waste facilities) will see how the scope, quantity and quality of their data can be improved to help their colleagues design more effective waste management systems.
