Book excerpt: Due to the limitations of conventional groundwater remediation technologies, innovative methods have been sought to enhance the removal of recalcitrant compounds such as trichloroethylene (TCE) and tetrachloroethylene (PCE), which are frequently trapped in the subsurface as dense nonaqueous phase liquids (DNAPLs). Surfactant-Enhanced Aquifer Remediation (SEAR) is one such method, which has been adapted from enhanced oil recovery techniques used by the petroleum industry. It involves sweeping a surfactant solution across the DNAPL-contaminated portion of the aquifer. The surfactants accomplish rapid removal of the DNAPL contaminant by greatly increasing its effective aqueous solubility and by reducing the interfacial tension between the DNAPL and water phases. In field demonstrations conducted to date, up to 99% removal efficiencies have been achieved with just three pore volumes of surfactant followed by water flooding. In a typical remediation scheme, surfactants are used to remediate DNAPL source areas and complement the use of other technologies, such as conventional pump- and -treat systems, for removing the dissolved-phase plumes that are associated with DNAPL source areas. Currently, simple options for remediating DNAPL source areas are limited. Residual DNAPL in an aquifer acts as a continual source of contamination to the groundwater, and site closure cannot be achieved unless the source is removed. This surfactant-based technology will be more cost-effective than conventional pump-and-treat systems and will provide for a more rapid site cleanup.

Experiments were performed to calibrate the hydraulic and thermal properties of the system within a computer model. Simulations were conducted to evaluate preferential flow through thermal plumes and to assess the effects of increased temperatures on DNAPL dissolution. The intrinsic permeability of the system was calibrated, with ' R'2 values ranging from 0.783 to 0.995. The thermal model was not sensitive enough to the heat capacity and heat loss coefficient values to allow model errors to be consistently minimized for the two sample times examined. Simulations demonstrated that preferential flow within a heat plume would not be significant over long periods of time. Improved recovery was achieved in variable temperature simulations of residual tetrachloroethylene (PCE) dissolution, but significant increases in recovery may only be realized in mass transfer rate limited systems.

Two dimensional (2-D) experimental results indicated that, for some DNAPL compounds (e.g., TCE), recovery by surfactant-enhanced solubilization using the surfactant Tween 80 is comparable to that observed with low interfacial tension (IFT) solutions designed to mobilize the DNAPL. Hence, Tween 80 (or similar surfactants) should be considered for remediation of TCE source zones, particularly if combined with bioremediation of residual contamination.

Chlorinated solvents are common DNPL contaminates at sites where operations, such as aircraft maintenance, dry cleaning, and metal finishing have historically occurred. In the past, because of the difficulty in identifying the DNAPL source zone, most remediation efforts focused on controlling the migration of the dissolved chlorinated volatile organic compounds plume. Recently, many sites owners have had success in locating DNAPL sources. DNAPL source remediation is beneficial because once the source has been significantly mitigated; the strength and duration of the resulting plume can potentially be lowered. The goal of the project is to evaluate the technical and cost performance of ISCO technology for remediation of DNAPL source zones. This innovative technology is based on the ability of strong oxidants to react with and destroy several types of DNAPL contaminants. Treatment of chlorinated volatile organic compounds with oxidants has been used historically for drinking water and wastewater treatment, but the in situ use of these oxidants for DNAPL source treatment is relatively new. The ISCO demonstration is part of a larger demonstration of three different DNAPL remediation technologies being conducted.
