Book excerpt: This book has been planned and written by Dr. Hine with his knowledge and experience in electrochemical science and engineering for over thirty years since he joined with me at Kyoto University in 1948. This book is unique and is useful for engineers as well as scientists who are going to work in any interdisciplinary field connected with elec trochemistry. Science is sure to clarify the truth of nature as well as bring prosperity and an improvement to the welfare of human beings. The origin of the word "science" is the same as of "conscience," which means the truth of our heart. When we consider a scientific and technological subject, first we classify it into the components and/or factors involved, and then we clarify them individually. Second, we combine them to grasp the whole meaning and feature of the subject under discussion. Computers may help us greatly, but how to establish the software that will be most desirable for our purposes is of great importance. We need to make these efforts ourselves, and not decorate with borrowed plumes. With this concept in mind, this book is attractive because the author describes the basic science in electrochemistry and practice, and discusses the electrochemical engineering applications as a combination of science and technology.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This user friendly introduction highlights the importance of electrochemistry and its applications to the modern world and the future. In contrast to other texts currently available, it emphasises understanding and avoids using many pages of complex equations. It also describes the diverse applications of electrochemistry rather than focusing on analytical chemistry alone. Although the book follows a similar structure to the first edition, the earlier chapters have been extensively up-dated and the later chapters are entirely new. The text is supported by a large number of figures which illustrate key points. The book starts by describing the essential electrochemical techniques before moving on to cover experimental problems and applications. To reflect the present interest in fuel cells and the environment, these have become the focus of the final chapters. A useful appendix contains problems with fully worked answers to test the reader's understanding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Chemistry of Electrode Processes discusses "electrodics" or the science dealing with the transfer of an electric charge between a solid and liquid phase. This book reviews the applications of electrodics, the history of electrochemistry, and the basic definitions and concepts of the galvanic cell. This text also deals with the rate expressions associated with the different types of electrode reaction mechanism including the passing of Faradaic current, the current-voltage curve, mass transport overpotential, and the influence of surface structure on electrode processes. This book describes the electrode-solution interphase at equilibrium, the properties of such interphase, and the ways it can influence electrode kinetics. Any electrode reaction involves several steps and can be influenced by diffusion, adsorption and other parameters. The techniques to study electrode reactions and the electrode-solution interphase consists of equilibrium measurements, steady state measurement, and transient measurement. This text also describes the significant and potential uses of electrodics in technology which need less expensive equipment compared to using spectrophotometric techniques. This book is suitable chemists, for advanced students in analytical chemistry, physics, thermodynamics, and related subjects.

Book excerpt: Sheds new light on the significance of electrode inhomogeneity and electrochemical heterogeneity A major contribution to the field of electrochemistry, this book—based on a thorough review of the literature and author Yongjun Tan's twenty years of pioneering research—examines electrochemical heterogeneity and its effects on non-uniform electrode processes. The book focuses on localized corrosion, uneven electrodeposition, and non-uniform electrodissolution. Readers will learn all the core fundamentals, experimental methods, and engineering aspects of localized corrosion and other important heterogeneous electrode processes. In particular, readers will learn core methods to quickly calculate corrosion rates and study electrode inhomogeneity and electrochemical heterogeneity. Heterogeneous Electrode Processes and Localized Corrosion begins with a review of homogeneous electrode models and uniform corrosion measurements and then explores probing electrode inhomogeneity, electrochemical heterogeneity, and localized corrosion. Next, the book examines: Visualizing localized corrosion using electrochemically integrated multi-electrode arrays Measuring thermodynamic and kinetic parameters of localized corrosion processes Characterizing inhomogeneity and localized corrosion on coated electrode surfaces Designing experiments to study localized corrosion and its inhibition in inhomogeneous media Sensing localized electrodeposition and electrodissolution Exploring versatile heterogeneous electrode processes Throughout the book, there are case studies with maps that illustrate key aspects of heterogeneous electrode processes. In addition, the author provides plenty of examples that enable readers to fully grasp core concepts of electrochemical heterogeneity and its relationship to non-uniform electrode processes. Reviewing the experimental findings presented in this book, electrochemists will gain a better appreciation and understanding of the fundamental significance of electrode inhomogeneity and electrochemical heterogeneity.

Book excerpt: The idea of an "Advanced Study Institute" on the theme of electrode reactions on solid electrolytes was put forward by Dr. J. Dupuy at the meeting of the International Society for Electrochemistry in Eindhoven in September 1973. Through Dr. Dupuy, the Solid State Physics Department of Lyons University offered the Institute possibilities of accommodation in Corsica that seemed particularly tempting. The subject matter appealed to a number of people for a variety of reasons. A great deal of development work on applications comes up against interface phenomena which appreciably reduce anticipated performances. Numerous potential applications of specific electrodes or gauges appear that would benefit from a more systematic approach. From a more fundamental viewpoint, interface phenomena on ionic crystals are the subject of indepen dent investigations in quite distinct research fields such as solid state physics and electrochemistry. The choice of an interpretation from among the different models available is very often not a straightforward matter, and an attempt to promote a synthesis by bringing together the proponents of the various "schools" could not fail to be rewarding.

Book excerpt: Laser-enabled measurements are valuable tools for the investigation of surfaces and interfaces or for the in situ investigation of interfacial processes including electrode processes. The understanding of the thermodynamics of solid/liquid surfaces is important for surface science and electrochemistry. In the first part of this book, the authors describe a range of techniques for investigating interfacial tension and surface stress, which is important for coatings, thin films, and fuel cells. The techniques covered comprise bending beam (bending plate, bending cantilever, wafer curvature) methods with different detection techniques. Special attention is given to methods using optical detection by laser beam deflection or interferometry. The second part is devoted to the techniques based on the detection of refractive index gradients in the solution. The refractive index changes could be related to concentration gradients (Probe Beam Deflection, PBD) or light-induced thermal gradients (Photothermal Deflection Spectroscopy, PDS). The application of the techniques to surface-confined and solution electrochemical systems is described. Subsequently, a comparison with others techniques able to monitor ion fluxes is performed.
