Book excerpt: The growing demand for sustainable energy production and safer electronics necessitates electrochemical energy storage devices with improved capacity and operating range. Ionic liquids (ILs) and deep eutectic solvents (DESs) are emerging electrolytes that remove the limitations of traditional solvents for energy storage. ILs have wide electrochemical windows, are often more thermally stable than organic electrolytes, and have negligible vapor pressure. DESs are easily synthesized from inexpensive components and are being considered for the next iteration of flow batteries. While both ILs and DESs fit into their own place amongst energy storage devices, they share a similar need in that the key interfaces governing electrochemical phenomena are poorly understood. We have begun determining the underlying interactions which govern the phenomena at both the solvent-solute and electrode-electrolyte interface in ILs and DESs. Electrochemical and spectroscopic investigations of an organic redox species in DES and DES analogues demonstrate faster diffusion of holes compared to diffusion of the solvation - complex. Less significant differences between hole and solvation-complex diffusion are observed for the systems where the Raman spectra of the organic species shift to lower energies. Determining differential capacitance of DESs indicates that strong hydrogen bonding hinders interfacial ion accumulation and extends the potential profile. For ILs we have shown that cations with ringed structures lead to larger overall capacitance while free alkyl chains allow for greater increases in ion density. Furthermore, it has become clear that ion density at the IL - electrode interface is strongly dependent upon local steric and repulsive forces and not bulk ion interaction strength. Complementing the trends in ion density, surface enhance Raman spectroscopy (SERS) captures potential induced rotations of the anion in and out of the electrode plane as well as buckling of large alkyl chains on the cation. Complementary to SERS, neutron reflectometry captures diffuse layers of ions where the composition between layers alternates from anion to cation rich.

The various electrified interfaces have several common features. The equilibrium distribution of positive and negative ions in an electrolytic solution is governed by the same Poisson-Boltzmann equation independent of whether the solution comes into contact with a metal, a colloidal particle or a biomembrane, and the same is true for the equilibrium distribution of free electrons and holes of a semiconductor in contact with a different conducting phase. Evaluation of electric potential differences across biomembranes is based on the same identity of electrochemical potentials which holds for a glass electrode and which yields the Nernst equation when applied to a metal/solution interface. The theory of thermally activated electron tunneling, which was developed by Marcus, Levich, Dogonadze and others to account for electron transfer across metaVelectrolyte interfaces, is also applied to light induced charge separation and proton translocation reactions across intercellular membranes. From an experimental viewpoint, the same electrochemical and in situ spectroscopic techniques can equally well be employed for the study of apparently quite different electrified interfaces.
