Book excerpt: If, ten years ago, one had been asked to comment on the prospects of peering into the fmest details of biomolecular organization, most electron microscopists would, I suppose at least, have been quite en thusiastic. When, during the early seventies, several groups were success ful in visualizing single heavy atoms, which undoubtedly was a techni cal triumph, this prompted the most sanguine expectations among bi ologists. In the following years, however, it began to transpire that radiation damage might impose limitations preventing us from taking full advantage of these exciting instrumental feasibilities. Fortunately, the radiation damage nightmare did no paralyze further activities, and it was in particular the work on the purple membrane which, brilliant ly exploiting the redundancy stratagem, revealed exhilarating new perspectives. Now, almost five years later, it seemed timely and appro priate to organize an international symposium to discuss and weight recent activities and current trends in "molecular microscopy". In planning this symposium, we selected topics according to our view of what is important or will deserve more attention in the near future. Taking into consideration suggestions made by the invited participants, some supplementary aspects were included; as a conse quence, the program developed somewhat beyond the scope as adum brated by the original title of this meeting (Regular 2-D Arrays of Biomacromolecules: Structure Determination and Assembly). As the meeting was organized, we had three morning sessions aimed at reflecting the "State ofthe Art".

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrochemical surface science (EC-SS) is the natural advancement of traditional surface science (where gas–vacuum/solid interfaces are studied) to liquid (solution)/electrified solid interfaces. Such a merging between two different disciplines—i.e., surface science (SS) and electrochemistry—officially advanced ca. three decades ago. The main characteristic of EC-SS versus electrochemistry is the reductionist approach undertaken, inherited from SS and aiming to understand the microscopic processes occurring at electrodes on the atomic level. A few of the exemplary keystone tools of EC-SS include EC-scanning probe microscopies, operando and in situ spectroscopies and electron microscopies, and differential EC mass spectrometry (DEMS). EC-SS indirectly (and often unconsciously) receives a great boost from the requirement for rational design of energy conversion and storage devices for the next generation of energetic landscapes. As a matter of fact, the number of material science groups deeply involved in such a challenging field has tremendously expanded and, within such a panorama, EC and SS investigations are intimately combined in a huge number of papers. The aim of this Special Issue is to offer an open access forum where researchers in the field of electrochemistry, surface science, and materials science could outline the great advances that can be reached by exploiting EC-SS approaches. Papers addressing both the basic science and more applied issues in the field of EC-SS and energy conversion and storage materials have been published in this Special Issue.

In recent years, however, it has become obvious that even broader applications of this valuable technique are now available to advance knowledge and solve problems in organic, inorganic and biological chemistry. In this book, it is shown how a range of limitations that historically have restricted the use of voltammetric and related electrochemical techniques have been removed or minimised so that it is now possible to work in the gas and solid phases as well as the traditional liquid phase. Significant advances in theory, instrumentation and electrode design have also made the technique more user-friendly. The initial chapters of this book describe the basic theory and philosophy behind the modern, widespread use of voltammetric techniques. The later chapters provide examples of new areas of application and predict future possibilities for this exciting area.

Book excerpt: This volume represents the written account of the NATO Advanced Study Institute "Lower-Dimensional Systems and Molecular Electronics" held at Hotel Spetses, Spetses Island, Greece from 12 June to 23 June 1989. The goal of the Institute was to demonstrate the breadth of chemical and physical knowledge that has been acquired in the last 20 years in inorganic and organic crystals, polymers, and thin films, which exhibit phenomena of reduced dimensionality. The interest in these systems started in the late 1960's with lower-dimensional inorganic conductors, in the early 1970's with quasi-one-dimensional crystalline organic conductors. which by 1979 led to the first organic superconductors, and, in 1977, to the fITSt conducting polymers. The study of monolayer films (Langmuir-Blodgett films) had progressed since the 1930's, but reached a great upsurge in . the early 1980's. The pursuit of non-linear optical phenomena became increasingly popular in the early 1980's, as the attention turned from inorganic crystals to organic films and polymers. And in the last few years the term "moleculw' electronics" has gained ever-increasing acceptance, although it is used in several contexts. We now have organic superconductors with critical temperatures in excess of 10 K, conducting polymers that are soluble and processable, and used commercially; we have films of a few monolayers that have high in-plane electrical conductivity, and polymers that show great promise in photonics; we even have a few devices that function almost at the molecular level.
