Abstract: Abstract of thesis entitled Electrochemical Wastewater Treatment for Denitrification and Toxic Organic Degradation Using Ti-based SnO and RuO Electrodes 2 2 submitted by Xie, Zhaoming for the degree of Doctor of Philosophy at the University of Hong Kong in December 2006 Many wastewater pollutants, including toxic organic compounds and nutrients at a high concentration, are difficult to treat with conventional treatment processes. Wastewater treatment technologies require continuous advances to ensure that the effluent continues to comply with more stringent discharge standards and to improve the cost-effectiveness of the practice. The electrochemical (EC) method is an advanced oxidation process that has shown promise as an effective treatment alternative for wastewater containing toxic substances. This study focused on the development of the electrochemical technology for degradation of aromatic and chlorinated aromatic organic pollutants and for nitrogen removal from landfill leachate and sewage sludge liquor. A double-layer coating technique was employed to make titanium-based catalytic active electrodes in Ti/SnO-Sb-Al for EC organic oxidation. The experimental results show that the Ti/SnO -Sb-Al anode is much more effective for electrolysis of phenol and chlorophenol than other conventional anodes of Pt, Ti/RuO and Ti/IrO . For phenol (100 mg/L) treatment, complete organic removal was 2 achieved after 5 hrs on anode Ti/SnO -Sb-Al at 20 mA/cm, compared with only 36% and 12% organic reductions provided by the Pt and Ti/RuO anodes, respectively. Similarly, for chlorophenol electrolysis, the best treatment performance was obtained with anode Ti/SnO -Sb-Al, followed by Pt and then Ti/RuO . Analysis with the High 2 2 Performance Liquid Chromatography (HPLC) revealed many intermediate products during the EC process, from aromatic compounds to aliphatic acids, which were oxidized rapidly by Ti/SnO -Sb-Al but accumulated in the Pt and Ti/RuO cells. In 2 2 addition, formation of colored polymeric materials occurred in the Pt and Ti/RuO electrolyzed solutions. Based on the EC degradation performance and the HPLC results, modified pathways of phenol and chlorophenol electrolysis at different types of electrodes were proposed. The different electrodes were characterized for their electrochemical behavior and surface properties. Compared to the Pt and Ti/RuO anodes, Ti/SnO -Sb-Al had a 2 2 considerably higher overpotential of oxygen evolution according to the voltammograms, which would facilitate the production of hydroxyl radicals. Direct phenol and chlorophenol oxidation could take place on the Ti/SnO -Sb-Al surface but not on the Pt and Ti/RuO anodes. The Ti/SnO -Sb-Al electrode also had apparently a 2 2 higher affinity with organic substances than Ti/RuO . It is argued that the anodic property has a significant influence on the kinetics, pathway and mechanism of organic electrolysis. Specific surface treatment such as the SnO -Sb-Al coating provides the anode with a catalytic function for rapid degradation of toxic organics. In addition, electrochemical denitrification experiments were performed using a lab-scale system with Ti/RuO -based mesh electrode plates for treating saline sewage sludge li

Book excerpt: The International Gothenburg Symposia on Chemical Treatment have proven to be a unique platform for the exchange of ideas between theory and practice. They bring together administrators, engineers and scientists, who are concerned with water purification and wastewater treatment through precipitation, coagulation and subsequent solid/liquid separation. This volume contains the proceedings of the 3rd Symposium, focussing on Pretreatment. Pretreatment is understood as the scene total of all measures taken at the pollutant source to protect water supply, the sewerage system, the central treatment plant, and the aqueous environment. It is, where applicable, the most efficient measure in ecological and economic respects. The contributions of this third volume address questions of surveillance, automation and remote control of installations as well as the principles of legal, administrative and economic measures for regulations within the context of pretreatment. Special attention is given to the possibilities and limits of pretreatment of industrial discharges. Again it is the editors'privilege to acknowledge the invaluable help from the authors of this book. It is the editors' hope that they might convey the significance and potential of pretreatment in water supply, in industrial waste management and in municipal wastewater treatment and sludge handling.

Book excerpt: Effluent from the bulk drug industry contains toxic and bio-refractory compounds plus the effluent quality usually cannot comply with the effluent discharge standards after conventional biological treatment processes. Electrochemical oxidation has come up as a promising technology for the treatment of Effluents containing bio-refractory organics. The study is performed for the advance treatment of bulk drug effluent through electrochemical oxidation and biological treatment technologies. The BDD electrode used in this technology has high over-potential for oxygen evolution and chemical stability. So it is an effective means to electrochemically decompose bio-refractory COD ammonical nitrogen, heavy metals, toxic compounds etc. through direct and indirect oxidation from the wastewater. For this reason, oxidative electrochemical technologies and have reached a promising stage of development Intensive research has been performed on the electrochemical decomposition of organic compounds with diamond anode. This study shows a complete removal of refractory COD, BOD, ammonical nitrogen and TSS from bulk drug effluent during the electrochemical oxidation treatment process.

Book excerpt: Wastewater treatment technology is undergoing a profound transformation due to the fundamental changes in regulations governing the discharge and disposal of h- ardous pollutants. Established design procedures and criteria, which have served the industry well for decades, can no longer meet the ever-increasing demand. Toxicity reduction requirements dictate in the development of new technologies for the treatment of these toxic pollutants in a safe and cost-effective manner. Fo- most among these technologies are electrochemical processes. While electrochemical technologies have been known and utilized for the tre- ment of wastewater containing heavy metal cations, the application of these p- cesses is only just a beginning to be developed for the oxidation of recalcitrant organic pollutants. In fact, only recently the electrochemical oxidation process has been rec- nized as an advanced oxidation process (AOP). This is due to the development of boron-doped diamond (BDD) anodes on which the oxidation of organic pollutants is mediated via the formation of active hydroxyl radicals.

This book was released on 2012-08-31 with total page 306 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Even though ozone has been applied for a long time for disinfection and oxidation in water treatment, there is lack of critical information related to transformation of organic compounds. This has become more important in recent years, because there is considerable concern about the formation of potentially harmful degradation products as well as oxidation products from the reaction with the matrix components. In recent years, a wealth of information on the products that are formed has accumulated, and substantial progress in understanding mechanistic details of ozone reactions in aqueous solution has been made. Based on the latter, this may allow us to predict the products of as yet not studied systems and assist in evaluating toxic potentials in case certain classes are known to show such effects. Keeping this in mind, Chemistry of Ozone in Water and Wastewater Treatment: From Basic Principles to Applications discusses mechanistic details of ozone reactions as much as they are known to date and applies them to the large body of studies on micropollutant degradation (such as pharmaceuticals and endocrine disruptors) that is already available. Extensively quoting the literature and updating the available compilation of ozone rate constants gives the reader a text at hand on which his research can be based. Moreover, those that are responsible for planning or operation of ozonation steps in drinking water and wastewater treatment plants will find salient information in a compact form that otherwise is quite disperse. A critical compilation of rate constants for the various classes of compounds is given in each chapter, including all the recent publications. This is a very useful source of information for researchers and practitioners who need kinetic information on emerging contaminants. Furthermore, each chapter contains a large selection of examples of reaction mechanisms for the transformation of micropollutants such as pharmaceuticals, pesticides, fuel additives, solvents, taste and odor compounds, cyanotoxins.
