Book excerpt: Understanding oxygen electrochemistry lies at the heart of enabling many advanced energy storage and conversion technologies such as fuel cells, electrolyzers and metal-air batteries. Aprotic Li-02 electrochemistry is receiving much attention in this regard, as the Li-0 2 battery theoretically offers higher energy densities than conventional Li-ion systems at potentially lower cost. This thesis explores the relationship between the energetics of 02 redox processes, and nucleation, growth, and reactivity of Li-O products in Li-02 batteries. Using a combination of rotating disk techniques and first principles calculations, we first assess the influence of 02- and Li+ ion solvation on the energetics of 02/02- and Li+/Li redox processes. By combining these results with measurements of the redox potential of the Li+-02 reaction intermediate, we show that both the coupling strength and solubility of the Li-0 complex are rationalized by the combined solvation of Li+ and 02- ions, with greater combined solvation increasing solubility but decreasing coupling energy, respectively. We next extend these results to studying the influence of applied potential and Li'-0 solvation on the participation of soluble and solid species during Li202 growth, using the rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) and electrochemical quartz crystal microbalance (EQCM) methods, respectively. As the applied potential increases, the reaction mechanism for Li20 2 formation switches from solution to surface-mediated, with the most likely pathways being Li+-02- disproportionation and 2e- transfer to 02, respectively. These insights are applied to understanding nucleation and growth of Li 20 2 in Li-02 batteries, using high surface area carbon-based electrodes as model systems. We first report, for the first time, the formation of large ~ 300 nm donut-shaped particles of Li20 2 at high applied potentials during Li-02 discharge, and smaller particles (

Book excerpt: Fundamentally understanding reaction mechanisms during Li-O2 cell operation is critical for implementing Li-air batteries with high reversibility and long cycle life. In this thesis, the rotating ring disk electrode (RRDE) technique has been used to probe the influence of different electrolyte solvents on the stability of the superoxide radical produced on planar glassy carbon and Au electrodes. It was found that the fraction of oxygen reduction reaction current attributable to superoxide generation exhibits a solvent-invariant potential dependence on carbon, with a higher fraction of superoxide produced at lower discharge overpotentials. This trend is in support of a proposed growth model for different Li-O2 morphologies, where Li-O2 growth is governed primarily by disproportionation of superoxide at low overpotentials and direct electron transfer at high overpotentials. On Au, superoxide stability exhibits a strong solvent dependence, which can be explained in terms of the effect of the electrolyte solvent basicity on the stability of the Li+-O2- ion pair. This study highlights the potential use of RRDE as a tool to gain insights into Li-O2 reaction and growth mechanisms and the contribution of soluble intermediate species to parasitic reactions in practical Li-air batteries.

Book excerpt: Over the past decade the topic of energy and environment has been ackno- edged among many people as a critical issue to be solved in 21st century since the Kyoto Protocol came into e?ect in 1997. Its political recognition was put forward especially at Heiligendamm in 2007, when the e?ect of carbon dioxide emission and its hazard in global climate were discussed and shared univ- sallyascommonknowledge.Controllingtheglobalwarmingintheeconomical framework of massive development worldwide through this new century is a very challenging problem not only among political, economical, or social c- cles but also among technological or scienti?c communities. As long as the humans depend on the combustion of fossil for energy resources, the waste heat exhaustion and CO emission are inevitable. 2 In order to establish a new era of energy saving and environment benign society, which is supported by technologies and with social consensus, it is important to seek for a framework where new clean energy system is inc- porated as infrastructure for industry and human activities. Such a society strongly needs innovative technologies of least CO emission and e?cient en- 2 ergy conversion and utilization from remaining fossil energies on the Earth. Energy recycling system utilizing natural renewable energies and their c- version to hydrogen may be the most desirable option of future clean energy society. Thus the society should strive to change its energy basis, from foss- consuming energy to clean and recycling energy.

Book excerpt: Battery technology is constantly changing, and the concepts and applications of these changes are rapidly becoming increasingly more important as more and more industries and individuals continue to make “greener” choices in their energy sources. As global dependence on fossil fuels slowly wanes, there is a heavier and heavier importance placed on cleaner power sources and methods for storing and transporting that power. Battery technology is a huge part of this global energy revolution. Potassium-ion batteries were first introduced to the world for energy storage in 2004, over two decades after the invention of lithium-ion batteries. Potassium-ion (or “K-ion”) batteries have many advantages, including low cost, long cycle life, high energy density, safety, and reliability. Potassium-ion batteries are the potential alternative to lithium-ion batteries, fueling a new direction of energy storage research in many applications and across industries. Potassium-ion Batteries: Materials and Applications explores the concepts, mechanisms, and applications of the next-generation energy technology of potassium-ion batteries. Also included is an in-depth overview of energy storage materials and electrolytes. This is the first book on this technology and serves as a reference guide for electrochemists, chemical engineers, students, research scholars, faculty, and R&D professionals who are working in electrochemistry, solid-state science, material science, ionics, power sources, and renewable energy storage fields.

Book excerpt: This thesis makes significant advances in the design of electrolytes and interfaces in electrochemical cells that utilize reactive metals as anodes. Such cells are of contemporary interest because they offer substantially higher charge storage capacity than state-of-the-art lithium-ion battery technology. Batteries based on metallic anodes are currently considered impractical and unsafe because recharge of the anode causes physical and chemical instabilities that produce dendritic deposition of the metal leading to catastrophic failure via thermal runaway. This thesis utilizes a combination of chemical synthesis, physical & electrochemical analysis, and materials theory to investigate structure, ion transport properties, and electrochemical behaviors of hybrid electrolytes and interfacial phases designed to prevent such instabilities. In particular, it demonstrates that relatively low-modulus electrolytes composed of cross-linked networks of polymer-grafted nanoparticles stabilize electrodeposition of reactive metals by multiple processes, including screening electrode electrolyte interactions at electrochemical interfaces and by regulating ion transport in tortuous nanopores. This discovery is significant because it overturns a longstanding perception in the field of nanoparticle-polymer hybrid electrolytes that only solid electrolytes with mechanical modulus higher than that of the metal electrode are able to stabilize electrodeposition of reactive metals.

His idea was to bring together experts in the field over the entire spectrum of pure research to applied research in order to familiarize everyone with potentially interesting new systems and the problems involved in their development. Dr. M. C. B. Hotz and Professor M. N. Ozdas were instrumental in helping organize this meeting as a NATO Advanced Science Institute. An organlzlng committee consisting of the three of us along with W. A. Adams, U. v Alpen, J. Casey and J. Rouxel organized the program. The program consisted of plenary talks and poster papers which are included in this volume. Nearly half the time of the conference was spent in study groups. The aim of these groups was to assess the status of several key aspects of batteries and prospects for research opportunities in each. The study groups and their chairmen were: Current status and new systems J. Broadhead High temperature systems W. A. Adams Interface problems B. C. H. Steele Electrolytes U. v Alpen Electrode materials J. Rouxel These discussions are summarized in this volume. We and all the conference participants are most grateful to Professor J. Rouxel for suggesting the Aussois conference site, and to both he and Dr. M. Armand for handling local arrangements.
