Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In recent years, great focus has been placed upon polymer thin films. These polymer thin films are important in many technological applications, ranging from coatings and adhesives to organic electronic devices, including sensors and detectors. Electrochemical polymerization is preferable, especially if the polymeric product is intended for use as polymer thin films, because electrogeneration allows fine control over the film thickness, an important parameter for fabrication of devices. Moreover, it was demonstrated that it is possible to modify the material properties by parameter control of the electrodeposition process. Electrochemistry is an excellent tool, not only for synthesis, but also for characterization and application of various types of materials. This book provides a timely overview of a current state of knowledge regarding the use of electropolymerization for new materials preparation, including conducting polymers and various possibilities of applications.

Book excerpt: Humankind's use of zinc stretches back to antiquity, and it was a component in some of the earliest known alloy systems. Even though metallic zinc was not "discovered" in Europe until 1746 (by Marggral), zinc ores were used for making brass in biblical times, and an 87% zinc alloy was found in prehistoric ruins in Transylvania. Also, zinc (the metal) was produced in quantity in India as far back as the thirteenth century, well before it was recognized as being a separate element. The uses of zinc are manifold, ranging from galvanizing to die castings to electronics. It is a preferred anode material in high-energy-density batteries (e.g., Ni/Zn, Ag/Zn, ZnJair), so that its electrochemistry, particularly in alkaline media, has been extensively explored. In the passive state, zinc is photoelectrochemically active, with the passive film displaying n-type characteristics. For the same reason that zinc is considered to be an excellent battery anode, it has found extensive use as a sacrificial anode for the protection of ships and pipelines from corrosion. Indeed, aside from zinc's well-known attributes as an alloying element, its widespread use is principally due to its electrochemical properties, which include a well-placed position in the galvanic series for protecting iron and steel in natural aqueous environments and its reversible dissolution behavior in alkaline solutions.

This book was released on 2012 with total page 281 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Dye Sensitized Solar Cells are an original alternative to conventional photovoltaic devices. With efficiencies up to 12% and low production costs, it is now a serious technology for mass market production. Development of new deposition techniques and original morphologies for the anode, which is a key component of the device, is expected to make this technology more competitive. In this work, we have used electrodeposition to prepare and characterize Zinc Oxide nanostructures. This technique is very suitable for preparation of nanostructured material with controlled morphology at nanoscale and very low cost of production. After introducing the context of Dye-Sensitized Solar cells with the most advanced results and the current reflections on the physical aspects of these devices, we have prepared a variety of promising nanostructures. Nanoporous ZnO layers have been adapted for deposition on ZnO-Al as substrate and a highly organized structure could be obtained. Hierarchical structures composed of highly conductive nanowires and nanoporous structure with high surface area have been synthesized. Electrochemical Impedance Spectroscopy has been carried out to characterize these nanostructures in order to investigate both optoelectronic and geometrical aspects. In a third part, ZnO-based DSSC have been prepared. The performance of the nanostructured ZnO layers and the influence of the substrate used for deposition have been investigated. Photovoltaic conversion efficiency up to 5.2% could be obtained in the optimized conditions.

Book excerpt: Cadmium oxide (CdO) and (CdO)x(ZnO)1-x mixed semiconductor films were cathodically electrodeposited for the first time on F-doped SnO2 substrates. The CdO thin films were deposited from an aqueous 0.1 M KCl medium containing dissolved Cd2+ species and O2. The (CdO)x(ZnO)1-x mixed oxide films were deposited from a bath which contained Zn2+ in addition to the CdO bath constituents. Films were potentiostatically deposited at 80°C followed by a post-deposition thermal anneal at 450°C. The mechanism of the electrodeposition was explored using cyclic voltammetry. These samples were then analyzed by X-ray diffraction, scanning electron microscopy, and UV-visible reflectance spectrophotometry. The photoelectrochemical behavior of these films is also presented. ZnO electrodeposition was carried out as a prelude to the main topic of this thesis research.
