These reusable devices can make rapid measurements in untreated samples, providing information that could allow doctors to make better decisions or change their course of action to avert clinical mishaps. This dissertation describes a variety of molecular architectures, and a device for using them to make measurements in the field. In short, we have developed a sensor that can rapidly test for aminoglycoside antibiotic overdoses in whole blood. Another sensor that was developed during the course of this dissertation can detect single-stranded DNA within two minutes. Finally, our laboratory has developed an inexpensive handheld potentiostat that can be used in conjunction with the aforementioned biosensors.
