Book excerpt: Metallic glasses are multi-component metallic alloys with disordered atomic distribution unlike their crystalline counterparts with long range periodicity in arrangement of atoms. Metallic glasses of different compositions are being commercially used in bulk form and as coatings because of their excellent corrosion resistance. This book was written with the objective of providing a comprehensive understanding of the electrochemical and corrosion behavior of metallic glasses for a wide range of compositions. Corrosion in structural materials leads to rapid deterioration in the performance of critical components and serious economic implications including property damage and loss in human life. Discovery and development of metallic alloys with enhanced corrosion resistance will have a sizable impact in a number of areas including manufacturing, aerospace, oil and gas, nuclear industry, and load-bearing bioimplants. The corrosion resistance of many metallic glass systems is superior compared to conventionally used alloys in different environments. In this book, we discuss in detail the role of chemistry, processing conditions, environment, and surface state on the corrosion behavior of metallic glasses and compare their performance with conventional alloys. Several of these alloy systems consist of all biocompatible and non-allergenic elements making them attractive for bioimplants, stents, and surgical tools. To that end, critical insights are provided on the bio-corrosion response of some metallic glasses in simulated physiological environment.

Book excerpt: Metallic glasses are very promising engineering and functional materials due to their unique mechanical, chemical, and physical properties, attracting increasing attention from both scientific and industrial communities. However, their practical applications are greatly hindered due to three main problems: dimensional limit, poor tension plasticity, and difficulty in machining and shaping. Therefore, further investigation of these issues is urgently required. This book provides readers with recent achievements and developments in the properties and processing of metallic glasses, including mainly thermoplastic forming of metallic glasses (Chapter 2), atomic-level simulation of mechanical deformation of metallic glasses (Chapter 3), metallic glass matrix composites (Chapter 4), and tribo-electrochemical applications of metallic glasses (Chapters 5 and 6).

Book excerpt: The electrochemical behaviors the Zr50Cu40Al10, Zr50Cu33Al10Pd--, and Zr52.5Cu1--.9Al10Ni14.6Ti5.0 BMGs were investigated in NaCl solutions. Both Zr50Cu40Al10 and Zr50Cu33Al10Pd-- exhibited poor corrosion behaviors. Zr50Cu40Al10 was vulnerable to localized corrosion at the open-circuit conditions (OCC). Zr50Cu33Al10Pd-- experienced localized corrosion at OCC or at slightly higher potentials. Anodic-polarization of both alloys demonstrated that small increases in the applied potential resulted in significant increases in the current density. Scanning electron microscopy examination of the corroded surfaces of both the Zr50Cu40Al10 and Zr50Cu33Al10Pd-- BMGs revealed that an oxide layer formed on the surfaces after the exposure to the chloride solutions. In both cases, the growth pattern of the oxide seemed to be related to a dendritic structure. Scanning Auger microanalysis of the heavily corroded areas on Zr50Cu40Al10 showed that the attacked regions were enriched with Cu, Cl, and O. Higher concentrations of Pd and Cu were observed in pits as opposed to the surface of Zr50Cu33Al10Pd--. A corrosion mechanism related to a galvanic electrode effect and the formation of CuCl and CuO was proposed. The anodic-polarization behavior of Zr52.5Cu1--.9Al10Ni14.6Ti5.0 (Vitreloy 105) was improved over the behaviors of Zr50Cu40Al10and Zr50Cu33Al10Pd--. Corrosion investigations were performed on samples obtained from regions transverse to and along the long axis of Vitreloy 105 ingots. "Swirl" features, usually thought to be areas of crystallinity, were visible in the longitudinal samples. Some longitudinal samples were treated with a laser in attempts to induce crystallinity. The cross-sectional samples were passivated at OCC; however, pits did initiate after significant overpotentials were applied. Some regions of the pits had a porous morphology that was enriched with Cu. The longitudinal samples also exhibited passive behavior at OCC. However, despite the presence of the "swirl" regions, the longitudinal samples were immune to pitting corrosion for the tested potential range. In-situ AFM experiments were performed on longitudinal samples in 0.6 M NaCl at an applied potential of -190 mV, SCE. Generally, the height of the surface increased with time, which was thought to be related to the thickening of the passive film. This observation may be associated with the improved pitting resistance of the longitudinal samples.

A noncrystalline solid produced by continuous cooling from the liquid state is known as a glass. From the other point of view, a noncrystalline material, obtained by any other process, for example, vapor deposition or solid-state processing methods such as mechanical alloying, but not directly from the liquid state, is referred to as an amorphous material. At this moment, bulk metallic glasses (BMG) are appearing as a new class of metallic materials with unique physical and mechanical properties for structural and functional usage. Extreme values of strength, fracture toughness, magnetic properties, corrosion resistance, and other properties have been registered in BMG materials.

Book excerpt: Microstructural control through heat treatments is one of the most important means of designing alloys to gain desired mechanical properties. As microstructural modifications in alloys are associated with creation of heterogeneities both in terms of chemistry (precipitates) and energy (defects such as dislocations, stacking fault and grain boundaries), they affect corrosion, especially the localized corrosion tendency of alloys. Contrary to this general wisdom, certain precipitation treatment in aluminium alloys has been found to impart high strength without sacrificing on uniform and localized corrosion resistance. Thus, the role of precipitates in influencing corrosion seems to be complex and needs a thorough understanding which may help to develop the guidelines for developing corrosion resistant structural alloys having high strength. In this study, three Al-based (Al-Ni-Y) metallic glasses with varying Ni content, namely Al87Ni9Y4, Al86Ni10Y4 and Al83Ni13Y4 were chosen as model alloy systems to investigate the mechanistic role of thermally-induced transformations or nanoscale precipitates on the corrosion properties. Annealing conditions (temperature and time) corresponding to different thermally-induced transformations such as structural relaxation, partial and full crystallization were selected based on the DSC thermograms. Synchrotron X-ray diffraction (XRD), nuclear magnetic resonance (NMR) spectroscopy and transmission electron microscope (TEM) were employed to characterize the structure of these metallic glasses before and after annealing. Surface characterization was done using X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Potentiodynamic polarization and electrochemical impedance techniques were employed to study the corrosion behaviour of these glasses in a freely exposed 3.5 wt.% NaCl solution of pH 6.5. Annealing in all the three glasses below their respective first crystallization temperatures caused reduction in passive current density, although they were not found to undergo any structural relaxation which is in contrast with the published literature. The present study found that the Y segregation to the surface due to annealing causes reduction in passive current density. Y segregation has also been found to affect electrochemical corrosion behaviour of the glasses even in the crystallized state.Formation of FCC Al precipitates caused an increase in passive current density in all the conditions, but improves the pitting resistance. It is found that Y is the main element responsible for better corrosion resistance of Al-Ni-Y metallic glasses and since FCC Al precipitates is free of Y; these precipitates tend to dissolve faster than the matrix causing an increase in passive current density. On the contrary, stable pits are formed only when the pit size exceeds a critical level. Below the critical size pitting potential might raise as the precipitates may be covered with Y and/or Ni oxides. Enrichment of Ni and Y in the matrix in the immediate vicinity of the precipitate might help to cover the precipitates with more Ni and Y, and also suppress the pit growth beyond the pit. In contrasts to FCC Al precipitates, the intermetallic phases (Al3Ni and Al19Ni5Y3) rich in Y and Ni resist selective dissolution, but their formation results in Y and Ni lean matrix surrounding them and so they can induce galvanic corrosion. Therefore, as high temperature crystallization caused coarsening of FCC Al and increase in the volume fraction of Y and Ni containing intermetallic phases, and Y and Ni lean glassy matrix, the glasses lost their passivity. Thus, this study emphasizes the role of the size of the precipitates, chemistry of the precipitates and the chemistry of the surrounding matrix in electrochemical polarization tendency of the glasses. Based on these observations, a phenomenological model has been proposed to satisfactorily explain the change in the observed electrochemical behaviour (both the passive current density and pitting potential, which was not done in the published literature) of the alloys due to crystallization.

Book excerpt: In spite of considerable efforts over the years to understand and combat materials degradation via corrosion processes, many challenges still remain both in the theoretical understanding of the phenomena and in seeking pratical solutions to the perennial problem. Progress has been slow due to the complexity of the processes and the systems involved. Fortunately, in recent years there has been a renaissance in the development of new electrochemical and optical techniques, as well as advances in instrumentation, which have greatly aided our quest to gain insight into the complex mechanisms involved in metallic corrosion and passivation. Numerous scientific meetings, symposia, and workshops have been held allover the world which attest to the frenzy of activities in corrosion science and technology. However, most of these conferences have dealt mainly with recent research results. There appeared to be a need to assess and disseminate our present state of knowledge in the field as regards measurement techniques, theory, and instrumentation. The present NATO Advanced Study Institute was therefore held in Viana do Castelo, Portugal from July 9 to 21, 1989. The Institute consisted of a series of tutorial lectures, poster sessions, and round-table discussions interspersed evenly over the two-week period. It was attended by 75 participants from several countries representing industry, government and university laboratories.

Book excerpt: Metallic glasses are relatively new materials with a large potential for applications in various technical and biomedical fields. However, for efficient use of these novel materials with an interesting combination of properties, it is necessary to fully characterize them for their mechanical and electrochemical properties. Studies on the effects of chemical parameters (pH, temperature, concentration of reagent) and tribological parameters (load, sliding speed, counterbody, contact configuration) on the kinetics of the reaction (id est, the material removal rate) supply information on the dominant mechanisms governing the tribo-electrochemical behavior of metallic glasses. Although considerable efforts have been made to characterize their mechanical, corrosion, and magnetic properties, the study of their tribocorrosion patterns is in a rather unsatisfactory state, and very limited information is available. It is the purpose of this chapter to provide an overview of basic information on the tribo-electrochemical properties of most metallic glasses. This becomes crucial when such materials are to be considered in systems where solid surfaces are prone to mechano-chemical transformation processes.

Book excerpt: In this study, the surface degradation behavior was studied for typical examples from bulk metallic glasses (BMGs), metallic glass composites (MGCs) and high entropy alloys (HEAs) alloy systems that are of scientific and commercial interest. The corrosion and wear behavior of two Zr-based bulk metallic glasses, Zr41.2Cu12.5Ni10Ti13.8Be22.5 and Zr57Cu15.4Ni12.6Al10Nb5, were evaluated in as-cast and thermally relaxed states. Significant improvement in corrosion rate, wear behavior, and friction coefficient was seen for both the alloys after thermal relaxation. Fully amorphous structure was retained with thermal relaxation below the glass transition temperature. This improvement in surface properties was explained by annihilation of free volume, the atomic scale defects in amorphous metals resulting from kinetic freezing. Recently developed MGCs, with in situ crystalline ductile phase, demonstrate a combination of mechanical properties and fracture behavior unseen in known structural metals. The composites showed higher wear rates but lower coefficient of friction compared to monolithic amorphous glasses. No tribolayer formation was seen for the composites in sharp contrast to that of the monolithic metallic glasses. Corrosion was evaluated by open circuit potential (OCP) analysis and potentiodynamic polarization. Site-specific corrosion behavior was studied by scanning vibration electrode technique (SVET) to identify formation of galvanic couples. Scanning kelvin probe microscope was used to map elecropositivity difference between the phases and linked to wear/corrosion behavior. Phases with higher elecropositivity were more susceptible to surface degradation. Wear and corrosion synergy in marine environment was evaluated for two high entropy alloys (HEAs), CoCrFeMnNi and Al0.1CoCrFeNi. Between the two alloys, Al0.1CoCrFeNi showed better wear resistance compared to CoCrFeMnNi in dry and marine conditions due to quicker passivation, a higher magnitude of polarization resistance and significantly larger pitting resistance.
