Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Characteristics of Transmission Circuits Many articles each pertaining to some particular method of solution of transmission circuits have been published from time to time. This book constitutes a review of each of numerous methods perviously proposed by different authors with examples illustrating each method of solution and the accuracy which may be expected by its use. Thus by permission of various authors the reader of this book is provided with a choice of nu merous methods ranging between the most simplified graphical forms of solutions and complete mathematical solutions. He is also provided with numerous and extensive tables of circuit and other constants making it unnecessary for him to lose time and risk making mistakes in calculating constants for each case in question. Much effort has been expended with a view of simplifying explanations by the aid of supplementary diagrams and tabulations. The engineer upon whose lot it only occasionally falls to determine the size of conductors and performances of circuits appreciates how easy it is to make errors in calculations which may prove very serious and should find the quick estimating tables very useful particularly for short line solutions. For those preferring to avoid the more mathematical solutions the all graphical methods for solving long line problems including the Wilkinson Kennelly charts for obtaining graphically the auxiliary constants should prove helpful. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Elements of Electrical Transmission: A Text-Book for Colleges and Technical Schools In preparing the material for this book, it has been the author's aim to present those things which should be grouped and articulated in order to afford an elemental study of the very broad subject of the generation, transmission, distribution and utilization of power by electrical processes. The title of the work only partially covers this field, but was chosen with a view to brevity and convenience. In fact, our language needs some modest word for so large a subject. Necessarily, the material available far exceeds the capacity of any single volume, but the attempt is made to provide a working text-book which may serve as a more or less complete course, depending upon the amount of time available for the subject. It is hoped that it may serve as an outline for even an extended course, supplemented always by that most important source, the teacher. Nevertheless, the book will probably stand or fall as an elementary text-book, which is all that it desires to be. It is proper to discuss subjects which have been presented in other books, because they are important features. It has also seemed wise to provide certain discussions not elsewhere available because, sooner or later, the student feels the need of them. Under this head would come the matters of self-induction and capacity of polyphase circuits as derived from single-phase circuits, line calculations, standing waves, traveling waves, curve calculations, etc. Further comment might be made upon each of these topics and it seems necessary to speak particularly of the methods presented in making line calculations. Here, there are given several processes, each used more or less commonly. They are all presented in detail in order that contrasts may be made and the simplicity of the series approximation emphasized. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Electric Circuit The Magnetic Circuit, is intended to give a student in electrical engineering the theoretical elements necessary for calculation of the performance of dynamo-electric machinery and of transmission lines. The advanced student must be taught to treat every electric machine as a particular combination of electric and magnetic circuits, and to base its performance upon the fundamental theoretical relations rather than upon a separate theory established for each kind of machinery, as is often done. The first chapter is devoted to a review of the direct-current circuit, the next four chapters treat of sine-wave alternating current circuits, and the last two chapters give the fundamental properties of the electrostatic circuit. All the important results and methods are illustrated by numerical problems of which there are over one hundred in the text. The pamphlet is not intended for a beginner, but for a student who has had an elementary descriptive course in electrical engineering and some simple laboratory experiments. The treatment is made as far as possible uniform, so that the student sees analogous relations in the direct-current circuit, in the alternating-current circuit, in the electrostatic circuit, and finally in the magnetic circuit. All matter of purely historical or academic interest, not bearing directly upon the theory of electric machinery, has been left out. An ambitious student will find a more exhaustive treatment in the works mentioned at the end of the pamphlet. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Transmission Line Formulas for Electrical Engineers and Engineering Students The first method, which is described in Chapter III, is in the form Of a chart which gives the regulation or voltage drop of a line, and which also shows directly the required size of conductor for given conditions. In Chapter IV are given formulas for distribution lines and transmission lines only a few miles long. These are extended in Chapter V by means of the constant K to apply to transmission lines of any length in ordinary practice. For purposes of checking different formulas, and for the calculation of extremely long and unusual lines, the fundamental formulas of transmission lines are expressed by rapidly converging series in Chapter VI. While these series require much more arithmetical work than the K formulas, they will give the exact results to any degree of accuracy desired. The method of convergent Series in volves the use of complex numbers, that is, numbers in which j terms appear. They are easier to handle, however, than logarithms, sines and cosines of angles, or hyperbolic functions, and therefore the use of these other mathematical functions has been avoided. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Hydro-Electric Power Electrical Equipment and Transmission, Vol. 2 This volume forms a companion to, and is, in fact, a continua tion Of Volume I. There is no definite point Of division between the two volumes and this treatise was divided into two sections solely to make it less cumbersome and more convenient for reference. The treatments Of many Of the subjects are new and some Of the formulae have never previously been published. Like Vol ume I, this book is founded on experience and accepted practice, and is in no wise an academic treatise. The fundamentals Of electric circuits, discussed - from a physical instead Of a mathematical standpoint, have been included after careful consideration, in the belief and expectation that this portion of the text will be useful and convenient for engineers who already understand the principles of electrical circuits and alternating currents. The author is glad to be enabled to include Mr. H. B. Dwight's chart for the solution of transmis sion line problems, as it constitutes an admirable method Of quick computation and saves both time and labor. With the generally accepted practice Of using steel towers for transmission lines, the author is compelled to take issue. The economical reasons for supporting transmission lines on wood or concrete poles in preference to steel towers seem clear and unescapable. That the Short discussion on this subject will turn the tide Of conventional design from a practice which seems almost universal, is not to be expected and, undoubtedly, the use of steel towers will still continue. For the use Of such engineers as prefer conventionality to economy, a complete discussion of steel towers is included. Much labor has been expended in an attempt to make all mathematical discussions clear and simple. Wherever equations are given, the significance Of the symbols used will be found in close proximity to the equation. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Overhead Transmission Lines and Distributing Circuits: Their Design and Construction This book is intended to explain the fundamental principles and to give the data essential to the proper carrying out of the very varied operations which fall to the share of the present-day overhead line engineer. No attempt has been made to provide a complete, text-book of structural engineering, so that the calculations have in all cases been carried only as far as seems necessary to cover the direct practical requirements of the designer and constructor of overhead lines. Especial importance has been given to simplicity of statement, and the numerous worked examples, mostly taken from practice, will prevent any doubt arising in the application of the various formulae. The book is based on a practice of many years in this particular branch, and will, it is believed, prove useful not only to the younger engineers but also to those of more experience. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Electrical Engineering/Circuits and Systems Transmission Lines for Digital and Communication Networks An IEEE Press Classic Reissue In the recent past, knowledge of transmission line behavior was not essential to understanding digital logic design. Slow signals, relatively short wires, logic probes and the treatment of wave forms as sequences of ones and zeros made it possible to design logic without a solid understanding of fields. That has changed dramatically. Today, with edge rates and gate delays moving into the picosecond realm, innovative product designers must be able to understand and model the essential distributed element nature of electrical circuits. Those who don't will lag far behind the competition. Keeping pace with these developments, IEEE Press is pleased to bring back into print this definitive reference on high-speed transmission line behavior. First written in 1969, this book provides a level of detail on high-speed signaling problems that remains unmatched to this day. Engineers who want to move beyond the introductory level of field theory will find the practical applications they need for solving difficult real-world problems. In this Book You Will Find Thorough Coverage of: * The realistic behavior of wiring, including skin effects * Series and parallel losses * Complex issues such as phase and group velocity, and the resulting pulse and edge spreading * Cross coupling of signals from physically adjacent transmission lines * Superconducting transmission lines An indispensable resource for scientists, circuit and package designers, and system architects, this book is also appropriate for students of computer-aided design and technology. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Power Transmission: Principles and Calculations, Including a Revision of Overhead Electric Power Transmission A portion of the material which was originally contained in the Appendix has been incorporated in the text; but much of the first edition has been entirely omitted, either because its inclusion is no longer necessary owing to the rapid strides that have been made of late years in the general knowledge of electrical power transmission, or because it has been replaced by new material believed to be of more value to the student or practical engineer. The chapter describing the Thury system of transmission by continuous currents has been retained with only slight changes and additions. It has not been deemed expedient to omit this entirely because, although few American engineers have taken the trouble to familiarize themselves with this system of trans mission, there are conditions under which it has certain in disputable advantages which European engineers have not been slow to recognize. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electric Power Transmission: A Practical Treatise for Practical Men This volume is designed to set forth in the simplest possi ble manner, the fundamental facts concerning present prae tice in electrical power transmission. Busy men have little time to spend in discussing theories of which the practical results are known, or in following the derivation of formulae which no one disputes. The author has therefore endeavored, in introducing such theoretical considerations as are necessary, to explain them in the most direct way practicable; using proximate methods of proof when precise and general ones would lead to mathematical complications without altering the conclusion for the purpose in hand, and stating only the results of investigation when the processes are undesirably complicated. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The theory of transmission lines is a classical topic of electrical engineering. Recently this topic has received renewed attention and has been a focus of considerable research. This is because the transmisson line theory has found new and important applications in the area of high-speed VLSI interconnects, while it has retained its significance in the area of power transmission. In many applications, transmission lines are connected to nonlinear circuits. For instance, interconnects of high-speed VLSI chips can be modelled as transmission lines loaded with nonlinear elements. These nonlinearities may lead to many new effects such as instability, chaos, generation of higher order harmonics, etc. The mathematical models of transmission lines with nonlinear loads consist of the linear partial differential equations describing the current and voltage dynamics along the lines together with the nonlinear boundary conditions imposed by the nonlinear loads connected to the lines. These nonlinear boundary conditions make the mathematical treatment very difficult. For this reason, the analysis of transmission lines with nonlinear loads has not been addressed adequately in the existing literature. The unique and distinct feature of the proposed book is that it will present systematic, comprehensive, and in-depth analysis of transmission lines with nonlinear loads. A unified approach for the analysis of networks composed of distributed and lumped circuits A simple, concise and completely general way to present the wave propagation on transmission lines, including a thorough study of the line equations in characteristic form Frequency and time domain multiport representations of any linear transmission line A detailed analysis of the influence on the line characterization of the frequency and space dependence of the line parameters A rigorous study of the properties of the analytical and numerical solutions of the network equations The associated discrete circuits and the associated resisitive circuits of transmission lines Periodic solutions, bifurcations and chaos in transmission lines connected to noninear lumped circuits

Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Engineering: The Theory and Characteristics of Electrical Circuits and Machinery The second edition contains all the material in the original text but much of it has been rewritten and a great deal of new material added. The more important additions include sections on complex alternating waves and wave analysis, on polyphase alternating current circuits, on the construction of the characteristic curves of direct-current generators and motors, on the design of direct and alternating-current machinery, on the Blondel diagram for the synchronous motor, on the symbolic method of analysis of the induction motor, on alternating-current commutator motors, and finally a chapter on electrical measuring instruments. The chapter on direct-current machinery has been entirely rewritten and much enlarged, and to make it complete a short chapter outlining the design of a direct-current generator has been added. This chapter and the other sections dealing with design are not intended to cover the work required in a course on design but only to give the student some idea of the formulae and constants involved.
