Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ignition Devices for Motors By Mr. ARTHUR CROTCH, of the Engineer-in-Chief'a Department, G.P.O., London. Mr. Crotch, who it a silver medalist and honoursaman in Telegraphy, and honoursman in Telephony, City and Guilds of London Institute, in his Preface, says: - "To describe an installation of secondary cells a great deal more is required than merely to treat of the battery itself. Given the latter, the question of charging immediately arises. If a public supply of continuous current at a low voltage be available, the cells will be charged direct If the voltage be unsuitable, a dynamo will be necessary, and a motor may be interposed to drive it Hence the student is told something of both dynamo and motor. Again, if the public supply be alternating - single or polyphase - some elementary explanation of alternators, and induction motors, and of alternating currents generally, will be welcome. Having treated of continuous current transformers, the static transformer naturally falls within the purview. Hence I traverse, broadly and simply, the whole field of generators and motors, direct and alternating current, together with the accessories involved- voltmeters, ammeters, automatic cut-outs, etc., etc. As to the accumulators themselves, I deal in a simple manner with the principles involved, and describe the main types in use in the telegraph service, including practical details of the running of charging plant, the treatment and behaviour of the cells." Book excerpt: Excerpt from Gas Engine Ignition: Prepared in the Extension Division of the University of Wisconsin This volume has been developed to satisfy the demand for a systematic course of instruction dealing with the ignition systems used on stationary and automobile internal combustion engines. In preparing the text, the authors have had in mind the needs of the men in the factories and repair shops who have to install, adjust, and repair ignition systems. For this reason, a few systems have been included which are no longer manufactured, but which are to be found in operation in large numbers. The division of the text matter into chapters has been made with the idea of making uniform assignments of work for home study, rather than of following any more logical classification. The authors wish to express their appreciation of the hearty co-operation received from the manufacturers in supplying the cuts for the illustrations of the book. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Theory of the Ignition Coil The modern ignition coil, otherwise known as Induction coil, Inductorium, or Rhumkorff coil was regarded a few years ago principally as a useful laboratory apparatus and was chiefly used to illustrate the principles of electro magnetic induction. To-day it has become an article of ne cessity to thousands of people, and the industry of manu facturing induction coils has become a very important one. Among the uses to which induction coils are put, may be mentioned the wireless telegraph, the excitation of X-ray tubes, igniting the explosive mixture of gas and gasoline in the internal combustion engines of various types, electric gas lighting, etc. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Electrical Performance of the Magneto-Generator There are in general two forms of electrical ignition systems: the low tension, commonly called the make and break, and the high tension, or jump spark. In the low tension system the spark is produced by breaking an electro-magnetic circuit that has been energized during a period of make. The Spark of course appears at the points of break, so that the interruption of the Circuit must occur within the cylinder of the engine. In the high tension system, the energy stored during make of the primary circuit is suddenly transformed at break, by means of the secondary circuit, to a voltage that is sufficient to over-come the dielectric strength of a gap consisting of two permanently fixed spark points. Both of these forms of ignition represent good practise in their respective fields. The field of the low tension system is in general internal combustion engines in which the operating speed is low enough to permit the use of the necessary make and break mechanism. Because of the fact that this mechanism must produce a relatively long and quick break, besides enduring the heat and pressure of the cylinder, its proportions must be such that it is unfeasible to Operate it on engines firing more than 600 to 700 times per minute, as the upper limit and is rarely used on engines of even that speed. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engine, Vol. 2 The first volume of the new edition of this work was published in 1909, so that three years have been spent in the preparation of the present volume, which deals with practical problems of design, con struction and operation of Gas, Petrol, and Oil Engines. The author has been fortunate in securing the co-operation of Mr. G. A. Burls, in collecting information and writing the book. Chapters I, II, V and XII are by the author Chapters VII, VIII, IX and XI are by Mr. Burls while Chapters III, IV, VI and X are in great part the work of Mr. Burls. The whole work, however, has been the subject of joint discussion, and the book as it now stands correctly represents the opinions of both writers. The aim throughout all the chapters has been the comparison of early and late constructions and the discussion of various problems which have appeared in the course of the development of the various types of engine since the introduction of the Otto cycle in 1876. Chapters I and II deal broadly with the development of four and two-stroke engines, and describe various difficulties which have been encountered and partially overcome; results of operation are given and various tests are dealt with both in the works and in practical Operation in factories. Chapter III deals with igniting arrangements, and describes and discusses the advantages and disadvantages of the different methods used, tracing the development which has demonstrated the supremacy of electrical ignition in its best forms. Chapter IV describes governors and governing methods as practised on the Continent and in England and America.
