Book excerpt: Motivated by the advantages of two-electrode flash sintering over normal sintering, we have investigated the effect of an external electric field on the viscosity of glass. The results show remarkable electric field-induced softening (EFIS) as application of DC field significantly lowers the softening temperature of glass. To establish the origin of EFIS, the effect is compared for single vs. mixed-alkali silicate glasses with fixed mole% of the alkali ions such that the mobility of alkali ions is greatly reduced while the basic network structure does not change much. Sodium silicate and lithium-sodium mixed alkali silicate glasses were prepared by standard melt-quench method. The samples were tested mechanically in situ under compression in external electric field ranging from 0 to 250 V/cm in specially designed equipment. A creep tester was modified to track viscous displacement of glass while a measurement circuit was built to record voltage across and current though the sample. The circuit was designed to carefully measure current within six orders of magnitude. A comparison of data for different compositions indicates a complex mechanical response due to Joule heating, electrolysis, dielectric breakdown and field-assisted viscous flow.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The mixed alkali effect in silicate glasses was examined from internal friction measurements made over the temperature range from -190 to 500°C and at a frequency of 0.4 Hz. Supplemental measurements of the activation energy for the different internal friction peaks, dynamic shear modulus, density, and index of refraction were also made. All measurements were confined to silicate glasses containing mixtures of Li-Na, Li-K, Li-Rb, Li-Cs, Na-K, Na-Rb, Na-Cs, and K-Rb. Rötger's interpretation of the internal friction of mixed-alkali silicate glasses is shown to be incorrect. A previously unreported internal friction peak was observed whenever two different alkali oxides were present simultaneously, The behavior of this peak in the different mixed alkali glasses is more easily correlated with the radius ratio of the two alkali ions present than with the mass ratio. A stress induced alkali ion position interchange is suggested as the probable mechanism responsible for this peak"--Abstract, p. ii.

Book excerpt: "Internal friction and sodium and potassium self-diffusion coefficients for (1-X)Na2O·XK2O·3SiO2 glasses were measured. Alkali diffusion was measured between 300 and 500°C using radioactive isotopes and a thin-sectioning technique. Internal friction was measured from room temperature to 500°C, 0.1 to 2000 Hz. Comparison between alkali diffusion and internal friction data for Na-K glasses with those for other mixed-alkali glasses shows that the mixed-alkali peak is related to alkali mobility. It is concluded that the mechanism for mixed-alkali internal friction is a cooperative rearrangement of dissimilar alkali ions, with the slower moving ion controlling the rate of reorientation"--Abstract, leaf iii.
Book Synopsis Introduction to Glass Science and Technology by : James E Shelby
Download or read book Introduction to Glass Science and Technology written by James E Shelby and published by Royal Society of Chemistry. This book was released on 2015-11-06 with total page 320 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book provides a concise and inexpensive introduction for an undergraduate course in glass science and technology. The level of the book has deliberately been maintained at the introductory level to avoid confusion of the student by inclusion of more advanced material, and is unique in that its text is limited to the amount suitable for a one term course for students in materials science, ceramics or inorganic chemistry. The contents cover the fundamental topics of importance in glass science and technology, including glass formation, crystallization, phase separation and structure of glasses. Additional chapters discuss the most important properties of glasses, including discussion of physical, optical, electrical, chemical and mechanical properties. A final chapter provides an introduction to a number of methods used to form technical glasses, including glass sheet, bottles, insulation fibre, optical fibres and other common commercial products. In addition, the book contains discussion of the effects of phase separation and crystallization on the properties of glasses, which is neglected in other texts. Although intended primarily as a textbook, Introduction to Glass Science and Technology will also be invaluable to the engineer or scientist who desires more knowledge regarding the formation, properties and production of glass.
