Book excerpt: Behind the deeply contentious 2020 election stands a real story of a broken election process. Election fraud that alters election outcomes and dilutes legitimate votes occurs all too often, as is the bungling of election bureaucrats. Our election process is full of vulnerabilities that can be — and are — taken advantage of, raising questions about, and damaging public confidence in, the legitimacy of the outcome of elections. This book explores the reality of the fraud and bureaucratic errors and mistakes that should concern all Americans and offers recommendations and solutions to fix those problems.

This book was released on 2023-07-31 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "This book offers an insight into the contribution of the Election Commission of India (EC) to the Indian democratic process through its regulatory role in conducting elections between 1990 and 2019. It elaborates upon the EC's interactions with pivotal state institutions - the parliament, the Supreme Court and political parties - to streamline democratic procedures during the aforementioned period. It demonstrates a comparison between important electoral procedures in India and those in other liberal democracies (Canada, the United States, the United Kingdom and South Africa, among others) to highlight the role of electoral institutions in democratisation. It also studies the sociopolitical situatedness of the EC as a body that moulds the political culture in India"--

Book Synopsis One Person, No Vote by : Carol Anderson

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As featured in the documentary All In: The Fight for Democracy Finalist for the PEN/John Kenneth Galbraith Award for Nonfiction Longlisted for the National Book Award in Nonfiction Named one of the Best Books of the Year by: Washington Post * Boston Globe * NPR* Bustle * BookRiot * New York Public Library From the award-winning, New York Times bestselling author of White Rage, the startling--and timely--history of voter suppression in America, with a foreword by Senator Dick Durbin. In her New York Times bestseller White Rage, Carol Anderson laid bare an insidious history of policies that have systematically impeded black progress in America, from 1865 to our combustible present. With One Person, No Vote, she chronicles a related history: the rollbacks to African American participation in the vote since the 2013 Supreme Court decision that eviscerated the Voting Rights Act of 1965. Known as the Shelby ruling, this decision effectively allowed districts with a demonstrated history of racial discrimination to change voting requirements without approval from the Department of Justice. Focusing on the aftermath of Shelby, Anderson follows the astonishing story of government-dictated racial discrimination unfolding before our very eyes as more and more states adopt voter suppression laws. In gripping, enlightening detail she explains how voter suppression works, from photo ID requirements to gerrymandering to poll closures. And with vivid characters, she explores the resistance: the organizing, activism, and court battles to restore the basic right to vote to all Americans.
Book Synopsis Individual electoral registration by : Great Britain: Cabinet Office
Download or read book Individual electoral registration written by Great Britain: Cabinet Office and published by The Stationery Office. This book was released on 2011-06-30 with total page 72 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This White Paper and draft legislation sets out the next stage in the Coalition Programme for Government on improving the political system. Within the Coalition Programme was the ambition to "reduce electoral fraud by speeding up implementation of Individual Electoral Registration", and this Paper sets out detailed proposals to achieve that objective. At present the electoral register is compiled by household and relies on trusting that those who register to vote are eligible. Individual Electoral Registration requires each elector to register to vote individually, and for each elector to provide personal identifiers for verification. The White Paper sets out a plan to accelerate and implement Individual Electoral Registration in line with the Coalition Agreement by 2014 and before the next UK Parliamentary general election. The Government will also drop the previous Government's plans for a voluntary phase, but instead have a transition period, which means electors who do not register by 2014 will not lose their entitlement to vote in the 2015 General Election. New electors, postal and proxy voters will though need to register under the new system to be able to vote. Alongside this legislation a number of "Data Pilot Schemes" will be launched that will compare the local electoral registers against those of public databases for accuracy and identify unregistered electors eligible to vote. The legislation will also look at modernising the electoral registration in general, including: allowing Electoral Registration Officers to offer more choice in registering, including online; giving people greater control over verification of their eligibility; and once Parliament is satisfied, end the annual canvass of households as the primary means of maintaining the completeness and accuracy of the register.

Book Synopsis Introducing Biometric Technology in Elections by : Peter Wolf
Download or read book Introducing Biometric Technology in Elections written by Peter Wolf and published by International Institute for Democracy and Electoral Assistance (International IDEA). This book was released on 2017-06-20 with total page 77 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A credible voter register gives legitimacy to the electoral process and helps prevent electoral fraud. However, voter registration remains a complex and contested task. It is one of the most important activities that an electoral management body needs to conduct, but it is also one of the most costly in terms of both time and resources. Many countries that face challenges in creating an accurate voter register are considering reforming their voter registration systems through the introduction of biometric technologies. The drive towards biometrics has been facilitated by its largely apolitical nature. Investing in high-tech solutions allows stakeholders to demonstrate their commitment to resolving electoral problems. At the same time, expectations on biometric solutions may be exaggerated. This guide provides an overview of key concepts and considerations for all stakeholders involved in discussions about the application of biometrics in elections, both for voter registration before an election and for voter verification at polling stations on election day.

Book Synopsis Voter Registration by : Janet B. Lane
Download or read book Voter Registration written by Janet B. Lane and published by Nova Biomedical Books. This book was released on 2002 with total page 162 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: One of the hallmarks of American democracy is the right to vote. In fact, the freedom to vote is so ingrained in American culture that it is taken for granted. Each election shows increasingly decreasing voter turnout and a decline in eligible voters registering. This can be partially attributed to a general antipathy toward the political process and partisan debates. However, there is no legitimate excuse for not availing oneself of the precious freedom to cast a ballot and have a say in the direction of the nation. With the increasing attention given to autocratic regimes across the globe and the restrictions placed on individual freedoms, it is amazing that the right to vote is not more appreciated. This is not to say that the American system is perfect. The 2000 presidential election drew unwanted attention on the inefficiencies and problems inherent in the system, leading to nation-wide cries to rectify the election process. This book analyses the issues around voter registration by looking at voter turnout over the elections of the second half of the 20th century. The articles presented here provide a needed historical background and study of the voting system and specific elections and make for an important collection in understanding the problems and importance of the vote in American democracy.
