Book excerpt: This book treats various generalizations of the classical O'Doherty-Anstey formula in order to describe stratigraphic filtering effects. These are the effects that can be observed when elastic and electromagnetic waves propagate through multilayered structures. Our aim was to treat this topic in a comprehensive manner and present compact results in a didactically simple way, emphasizing the physics of the wave-propagation phenomena. We do not claim mathematical rigidity in all our derivations, however, we are pleased to have obtained quite simple descriptions of scattering, transmission and reflection of wavefields in acoustic, elastic, and poroelastic media which can be useful for various seismological and non-seismological applications.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A first-order Born approximation is utilized to solve the direct and inverse scattering problems of bounded infinite media with random microstructures. The inhomogeneities of the media properties due to their microstructures are assumed to be small. Relatively simple relations are obtained between the mean-square incoherently singly-scattered signal intensities and the spectral density functions of the media inhomogeneities. These simple formulas can be applied straightforwardly to the nondestructive characterization of material microstructures. Special cases of scattering from an infinite random fluid layer, a flat solid plate and a solid half-space immersed in fluid are studied in the present work. The analyses are valid for materials with random microstructures in general, but our interest here is in polycrystalline materials and detailed analytical and numerical results are given for cubic crystal aggregates. Although the first Born single-scattering approximation is not valid for infinite media in general, we find that it can be applied to some cases, such as those studied here, with satisfaction. It is proved that the validity of the first Born approximation is guaranteed for infinite-layer scattering problems as long as the thickness of the layer is small. As for the case of surface wave scattering from a solid half-space, the applicability of the first Born approximation is evident from the fact that leaky surface wave propagation is a very localized phenomenon. Resonances can occur in the cases investigated here when measuring the scattered signal near some incoherent directions. Due to resonant phenomena one can achieve relatively strong incoherently scattered signals which are otherwise very weak.

Book excerpt: This volume contains a timely collection of research papers on the latest developments in the ever-increasing use of elastic waves in a variety of contexts. There are reports on wave-propagation in various types of media: in both isotropic and anisotropic bodies; in homogeneous and inhomogeneous media; in media with cracks or inclusions in random media; and in layered composites. The bulk of the papers are concerned with propagation in elastic media, but also included are viscoelastic, thermoelastic and magneto-electroelastic wave propagation, as well as waves in porous and piezo-electric bodies. Consideration is given to propagation in bodies as diverse as stretched elastic strings to surfaces such as thin walled cylinders, and thin films under stress. Applications considered include the determination of the depth of cracks; analysis of ground motions generated by a finite fault in seismology; surface wave spreading on piezo-electric solids; and dynamical stress intensity factors. Most of the papers are theoretical in nature, and many are complemented by numerical studies. Also included are a general survey on experimental techniques, and reports on experimental work. The volume will be of interest to those who do theoretical studies of elastic wave propagation and to those who apply elastic waves whether in seismology, non-destructive testing, the fabrication of devices or underwater acoustics, etc.

Book excerpt: A collection of lectures on a variety of modern subjects in wave scattering, including fundamental issues in mesoscopic physics and radiative transfer, recent hot topics such as random lasers, liquid crystals, lefthanded materials and time-reversal, as well as modern applications in imaging and communication. There is a strong emphasis on the interdisciplinary aspects of wave propagation, including light and microwaves, acoustic and elastic waves, propagating in a variety of "complex" materials (liquid crystals, media with gain, natural media, magneto-optical media, photonic and phononic materials, etc.). It addresses many different items in contemporary research: mesoscopic fluctuations, localization, radiative transfer, symmetry aspects, and time-reversal. It also discusses new (potential) applications in telecommunication, soft matter and imaging.

Book excerpt: Wave Propagation and Scattering in Random Media, Volume 2, presents the fundamental formulations of wave propagation and scattering in random media in a unified and systematic manner. The topics covered in this book may be grouped into three categories: waves in random scatterers, waves in random continua, and rough surface scattering. Random scatterers are random distributions of many particles. Examples are rain, fog, smog, hail, ocean particles, red blood cells, polymers, and other particles in a state of Brownian motion. Random continua are the media whose characteristics vary randomly an ...

Book excerpt: Elastic Waves: High Frequency Theory is concerned with mathematical aspects of the theory of high-frequency elastic waves, which is based on the ray method. The foundations of elastodynamics are presented along with the basic theory of plane and spherical waves. The ray method is then described in considerable detail for bulk waves in isotropic and anisotropic media, and also for the Rayleigh waves on the surface of inhomogeneous anisotropic elastic solids. Much attention is paid to analysis of higher-order terms and to generation of waves in inhomogeneous media. The aim of the book is to present a clear, systematic description of the ray method, and at the same time to emphasize its mathematical beauty. Luckily, this beauty is usually not accompanied by complexity and mathematical ornateness.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Elastic waves are used in fields as diverse as the non-destructive evaluation of materials, medicine, seismology and telecommunications. Elastic Waves in Solids 1 presents the different modes of propagation of elastic waves in increasingly complex media and structures. It first studies the propagation in an unlimited solid where only the material properties are taken into account. It then analyzes reflection and transmission phenomena at an interface with a fluid or a second solid. It explains the search for propagation modes on a free surface or at the interface between two media. Finally, it proposes a study of the dispersive propagation of elastic waves guided by a plate or a cylinder. This book is intended for students completing a master’s degree in acoustics, mechanics, geophysics or engineering, as well as teachers and researchers in these disciplines.

Book excerpt: Recent advances in wave propagation in random media are certainly consequences of new approaches to fundamental issues, as well as of a strong interest in potential applications. A collective effort has been made to present in this book the state of the art in fundamental concepts, as well as in biomedical imaging techniques. As an example, the recent introduction of wave chaos, and more specifically random matrix theory - an old tool from nuclear physics - to the study of multiple scattering, has pointed the way to a deeper understanding of wave coherence in complex media. At the same time, efficient new approaches for retrieving information from random media promise to allow wave imaging of small tumors in opaque tissues. Review chapters are written by experts in the field, with the aim of making the book accessible to the widest possible scientific audience: graduate students and research scientists in theoretical and applied physics, optics, acoustics, and biomedical physics.

Book excerpt: A theory of multiple scattering of waves by a continuous random medium is developed. An exact solution of the scalar wave equation with random index is given by means of a functional space integration. Perturbation expansions and serveral approximation methods are studied. New results are given, some of which disagree with previous ones. Coupling between different wave modes and subsequent energy transfer are also considered.
