Book excerpt: A method of elastic stress analysis for ring-stiffened circular cylindrical shells with linearly varying tapered insert at the deep frame is presented. The analysis is based on Fourier series expansion and an analogy to beam-columns on elastic foundation. In addition, the experimental data obtained from machined models are in good agreement with the theoretical results. (Author).

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The object of this book is to clarify the whole aspect of the basic problems concerning the elastic stability of of circular cylindrical shells under typical loading conditions. The book deals with buckling, postbuckling and initial postbuckling problems under one of the three fundamental loads, that is, torsion, pressure and compression. The emphases are placed on the accurate analysis and comprehensive numeral results for the buckling problem, experimental verification of the theoretical analysis for the postbuckling problem and clarification of the range of applicability of the perturbation method for the analysis of initial postbuckling behaviors and imperfection sensitivity. The problems under typical combined loads as well as the influence of the contained liquid are also clarified.

Book excerpt: The report covers the theoretical analysis of a cylindrical shell with a circular cutout and stiffened internally with equally spaced rings. The shell is considered to be infinitely long, capped at the ends and subjected to internal pressure. The exact solution of the partial differential equations of Donnell's and Flugge's theories of thin cylindrical shells is obtained in the form of an infinite series. Fourier expansions and the method of least square error are employed to satisfy the boundary conditions. Typical numerical results for the case of two ring stiffeners are presented at the end of the report. (Author).

Book excerpt: A small-deflection analysis is developed for the elastic interbay buckling of ring-stiffened cylindrical shells in which the influence of the rings on deformations before an during budkling is considered. Tests were carried out with a machined, ring-stiffened cylinder (BR-4B) subjected to external hydrostatic pressure Collapse was initiated by elastic asymmetric buckling of the shell. Strain easurements taken during the test demonstrated that the South ell method of determining buckling strength nondestructively is applicable in the case of interbay buckling. The results of this and three other tests of machined cylinders are in good agreement with the theory. While the Von Mises theory is inaccurate for closely spaced rings, its continued application for estimating elastic buckling strength is probably justified since it is always conservative and can be represented in a simple form.

Book excerpt: A theoretical derivation is given for elastic and plastic buckling of stiffened circular cylindrical shells under external hydrostatic pressure. The theory accounts for variable shell stresses, as influenced by the circular stiffeners, and critical buckling pressures are obtained for simple support conditions at the shell-frame junctures. Methods are given for the determination of collapse pressures for both elastic and plastic asymmetric buckling by interation and numerical minimization. The theory is applicable to shells made either of strain-hardening or elastic-perfectly plastic materials. Using the theory, it is shown that a variation in stiffener size can change the buckling pressures. Test data from high-strength steel and aluminum cylinders are presented which show theoretical and experimental collapse pressures to agree within approximately 6 per cent.

Book excerpt: A solution is obtained for elastic stresses in the ring frames of an imperfectly circular cylindrical shell of finite length subjected to external pressure. The method of analysis follows closely that used by Kendrick (Naval Construction Research Estab. Reports R.211, R.243, R.244 (1953)) in which an initial out-of-roundness shape is assumed and the principle of minimum potential energy is used to derive expressions for critical stress. However, an initial out-of-roundness in which the radial deviation is a cosine function is used in this analysis, whereas Kendrick assumed that the out-of-roundness was similar in form to the general-instability mode. The function used for the radial deviation in this report implies that there is no sagging of the cylinder generators between bulkheads, a condition more representative of actuality. This solution leads to flange stresses which are higher than those obtained from the theory of Kendrick. An approximate solution is also derived from which flange stresses can easily be computed once the elastic general-instability pressures and associated buckling modes of the perfect cylinder are known. This simplified result leads to maximum bending stresses in the frame flange which are 4/pi times greater than those found from a corresponding simple formula derived by Kendrick from his more complete solution. Book excerpt: Plasticity documents the proceedings of the Second Symposium on Naval Structural Mechanics held at Brown University, Rhode Island, 5-7 April 1960. It was sponsored jointly by the Office of Naval Research of the U.S. Navy and Brown University. The symposium was devoted to plasticity. The intention was to provide critical reviews of recent developments in certain areas of plasticity of particular current interest and importance, and to supplement these with short accounts of related current research work. The papers presented at the symposium covered the following areas: atomic theory of plastic flow and fracture; stress-strain relations including thermoplasticity and creep; basic theory including stability and uniqueness; boundary value problems including plates and shells; dynamic loading and plastic waves; and developments in design. Two talks were also held for the purpose of reviewing the present status of application of plasticity in design of naval vessels. The symposium was opened by Captain J. C. Myers on behalf of the Office of Naval Research and by Professor W. Prager on behalf of Brown University. Professor Prager closed the symposium by presenting a brief resume of the main accomplishments and trends in plasticity brought to light during the symposium.

Book excerpt: Three theories are presented for the analysis of ring-stiffened or monocoque cylindrical shells under hydrostatic pressure. The theories compute the stress state and the axisymmetric collapse, interbay buckling, and general instability pressures from external hydrostatic pressure loading. The theories were derived for the case of specially orthotropic material with theoretically uniform properties through the thickness; the theories apply equally to shells made of isotropic materials. A computer program, DAPS4 (Design and Analysis of Plastic Shells, Version 4), was written that incorporates these theories that can be used as an initial sizing tool or analysis of a shell's hydrostatic pressure capability. The program includes a "pseudo-plastic" method to account for the reduction of computed collapse pressures when the stress state is above the proportional limit of the material's stress-strain curve. The purpose of this report is to document the theories and the code. Correlation with numerous pressure tests is shown. A user manual with example problems is included.
